How do I de-install a program on my computer

I bought a new laptop and it had McCafee installed. I thought that was great till I noticed that it was only a trial installation for one month. Well, the month is over and I want to download Avira but I keep getting errors when I try to install it. So, I figure I have to de-install Mcafee (great sleuthing, right?). So, this may sound dumb but how do I do that?
TIA.
BTW I'm running Vista.

  • You'll need to use add remove programs

Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs

McAfee can be a bit of an ass to get uninstalled so I wish you the best with it!

    • Thanks. The weird thing is that when I try to uninstall it, it informs me that I still have a valid license. I don't get it. Maybe they tack on another few days to give me a chance to reconsider...
  • Once you uninstall go do a search from your hard drive for the program. Any left over files or license will be there. Now you can delete all of those files. Most uninstalled programs are still on your hard drive, but just deactivated.

  • The removal process complains or completely stops you from proceeding?

Mcafee themselves have a cleanup tool for you to run after you've uninstalled.
