Pit falls I wish I knew about digital marketing before I started..
Im now in the position that I wouldnt want to do anything else but there have been some moments where I have questioned my decision about getting into a digital marketing business.
If theres anyone out there dabbling with the idea of doing IM and digital marketing Im a massive advocate, that said there are plenty of things I wish I knew or had considered before I got cracking.
Heres a few:
- Dont rely on people to pay you on time, they wont and when youre running a small business its just part and parcel.
- You will always be heckled for price and told that someone is willing to do it for cheaper - thats fine, you probably wont get the same quality job.
- oull have times when your pipeline is pretty lean and then all of a sudden you will have so much work you wont be able to scratch yourself.
- You will feel isolated - no matter how much you love working alone, missing out on work Christmas parties and work drinks will suck and you will need to make your own fun.
- Networking will be a challenge and you will need to be proactive otherwise you will basically never see anyone other than your friends and family.
- You will need to be proactive about learning and enhancing your skills as there is no workplace training or professional development courses anymore everything you do will be off your own bat.
- You will quote people and not hear back from them for months and months, and then suddenly they will want something really, really urgently and you will need to drop tools and become a magician for you.
- You will earn as much as you want, but you have to be really, really motivated, no such thing as monthly paychecks anymore so income is all based on you.
Overall, digital marketing is incredibly rewarding, however every few weeks or so I have a bit of a reality check and realise Im not in Kansas anymore.
Anything else people want to add that I have forgotten?
