Beginner Question: Blogging

23 replies
I have an old website, a blog that I started but never fully focused on. Not a niche blog, more like industry blog (still looking to narrow the focus on smaller audience). The website needs some work, various optimizations but the site is fully running.
------
In my understanding, in order to grow my website, I should now focus on these stages:
1. Creating content
2. Promoting content
3. Directly or through content, send traffic to my selling offers
4. Develop an email list for those, that are not ready to buy instantly.

<I understand that writing quality stuff. building reputation and trust are key, not just bomb people with offers. But I'm just trying to understand the structure now>

Question:

As these 4 steps are extremely basic, could you help me expand/break them down to understand better what I need to focus on now? What would you if you got a done website that had no traffic? What things are must-have for any website that I may not have?

Sorry for such a broad question. I just have to start somewhere.

    You should start by searching this forum for posts related to your topic. There are tens of thousands of them and there is no need for anyone to restate them.

      Thank you for your help. I promise, I'm not asking just because I'm lazy to use the search button. But sometimes, so much information overwhelmes you to a point when you don't know even where to start. \

      In other words, I'm looking for structure because... I don't know what I don't know. From expired domains, Web 2's... there's so much I know people do, but I have no idea what of these things are necessary in the equation of blogging (at least in my case).

      I thank you for advice, I'm in for the money, but there are other reasons, too. Are you saying I should just leave my website, or repurpose it from a blog, to something else? And to be honest, if not blogging, I don't know what else

      Indeed, no man wants to create a blog that will fall in a blink of an eye. But been successful is not just about taking action but taking necessary action.
      Sure, I guess. Don't get me wrong, everything you said makes perfect sense, what's necessary>any action, but I'm just not sure how that helps in my case. I guess that's what I'm doing, trying to find the necessary steps, right?

      -----------------------------------------
      So, these are the steps so far:

      1. Creating content
      a) Visit relevant platforms (forums), post there.
      b) Web content
      b.I. Find best keywords/Sub keywords related your content
      b.II Find out your competitors according your keywords.
      b.III Make more unique & informative content than your competitors do.

      2. Promoting content
      a) Find out your competitors strategies like - where they get visitors, where they publish their content, who follow their site & why.
      b) Share your content
      3. Directly or through content, send traffic to my selling offers (Amazon products, affiliate offers)

      4. Develop an email list for those, that are not ready to buy instantly.

      5. Take care of the website
      a) Do all the On Page Steps ( Attractive title, site map, schema markup etc)
      b) Create your website more easy and attractive for user.

      I know there are many things missing (some I probably don't even know exist), right?

    If you have trouble focusing on your blog you can always find other people/businesses in your niche that can write the content for you in exchange for links back to their websites. Some people call them "guest bloggers".

      Thanks, guest posting maybe something I will look into as soon as the website is relaunched (it's working but articles are very old). Right now, my focus is fine. Like I said, at this point I'm just building a structure that I could follow for a few months until I start seeing results that I can analyze and optimize.

      However, what exactly 'in the right way' means? How do you know that you are promoting your content in the right way?

      • Daddyworks,

        Business fundamentals. That's where I always start when I want to invest in something that could potentially give me reasonable returns.

        >> So, start with market research.

        Identify a set of industries with buyer markets on the Internet. For example, third party Windows software.

        Zone in on sub industries with buyer markets where you have specialized expertise and relevant resources. For example, third party Windows productivity software for blind users with modest tech skills. I don't know yours, since I don't know what you can do and who you know.

        Next, zone in on certain niches in those sub industries with buyer markets that can significantly benefit from your specialized expertise and relevant resources. For example, third party Windows productivity software products with trial versions for blind Windows users in the USA who are actively looking for accessible productivity tools and also want to learn how to use these tools as blind users with modest tech skills.

        Then, create an ideal customer profile. What you can do is go to online places where your target audience hangs out and study what they're talking about, what they're reading, why they're going to those places, what they're buying and so on. Get to really know your ideal customers.

        Then, use what you learned to creatively analyze to know what they exactly want, what they're exactly looking for, what'll captivate them, entice and compel them to do anything that's mutually beneficial for themselves and you.

        Next, identify your top competitors and spy on what they're doing on their Web properties. Know where they're getting traffic, how they're getting them, what they're showing them, how they're converting them to subscribers, how they're converting subscribers to paying customers, how they're converting paying customers to repeat sales and viral marketers, why they're still in business, etc. Get to really know your competitors, their methods, their tactics, where they promote their content and offers, where they advertise, where they get affiliates and so on.

        Now, sit down. Use your market research data to create a realistic plan that can allow you to use your existing resources so as to do the following:

        * Use the traffic sources of your competitors for possible content placement and advertising opportunities;

        * Find non-competing partners with traffic significantly comprised of your ideal customers for possible content placement and advertising opportunities;

        * Cost-effectively reach your ideal customers in the online places where they hang out and where they're taken by your competitors;

        * Grab their attention with your content in those online places;

        * Entice them to become your fans and followers and subscribers through your offers;

        * Compel them to trust your recommendations and buy your products / services;

        * Entice them to keep on going back to you for your recommendations, content, products and services; and

        * Make them recommend you to their peers ...

        At this point, you have a realistic plan of action. So, create tests and monitor your results, and improve, scale up and grow your venture.

        Keep in mind that identifying, building, running and improving any viable venture that can realistically give you potentially reasonable returns at a potentially reasonable time frame are creative and iterative processes that can't be written down and followed through a step by step guide.

        That's why you only need to know where to start. And, starting with business fundamentals is always a good start, in my opinion ...

          Hey, thanks for such a thorough answer. However, it's just unfortunate that you somewhat missed the point. My question was about my current blog, I'm not entering a new niche. All I want to do is relaunch my old blog.

            Was talking about narrowing the focus on smaller audience, monetizing your blog, promoting your content and offers by mainly knowing your ideal viewers, spying on your top competitors, finding non-competing partners and using their best traffic sources (your competitors and non-competing partners) ...

    1. Start blog because you have the passion for the topic, not for just the money. Becoz when you follow money you tend to make mistakes and take it the top priority. But if you follow your passion, you intent to do better every next time from the previous time. You love what you do.

    2. Find your competitors, check their keywords, back links, traffic sources, quality of content, website usability, user experience etc.

    3. Make a schedule for posting, don't post too often and don't make such long delay in posting new blog that reader forget that you exist.

    4. Promote and share on various social media platforms, it will help you get more traffic. Lets people know you exist.

    5. Make sure your your website appears on google search, to do this, add it to google webmasters.

    6. Generate quality back links to your website.

    7. Make sure you have social presence on most of the major social handles.

    I appreciate your desire to create a thorough road map.

    My belief is that it's most important to do more doing and do less thinking.

    Write your blog.
    Share it on Facebook and Twitter.
    Find a place that connects with your audience where you can contribute either through commenting, article writing or forum posting. This could be a Facebook Group, a discussion forum or a big web site.
    Get a newsletter.
    Try to compel people to sign up to your newsletter when they come to your blog.

    That's enough. Just do those things for the next 2 - 3 months every day and see what happens.
