Should I have embedded video on my website?

I know video works on landing pages, but do you think that having a video on your home page of your website is a positive thing or a hindrance?

I don't want to piss people off when they come to my site and have a video kick off blaring my key messages at them.

While I think video is effective on a squeeze page, I wonder how effective it is on a website with a range of pages.

If it's worth having it on my website, please share the best way to ensure my page loads quickly and will be optimised as I will be doing this myself so I will need some steps (keep it simple for me please).

Thanks!

What about load times, will this be effected with video.

To clarify, this isn't a squeeze page but my website (with blog etc).

Yes placing a video on home page is a good idea if the video seems appealing to target audience, but also you should have sufficient content.

Businesses using a landing page video tend to rank better, many variables though, as long as the video has a purpose other than trying to gain time on site metrics up.

Do not set them to autoplay. The problem people usually have with videos is autoplay with no controls.

I provide them as an option, you can read the text or watch the video, visitors choice.

Yep Brent, I couldn't agree with you more there.

I can't stand auto play - does my head in honestly and I usually miss half the video anyway as I have my sound down or don't have my ear phones in.

      Thanks for your suggestion.

Any major sites set their vids to autoplay, for examples, thescene.com, buzzfeed.com and tastemade.com and numerous others, you think you do understand biz better than them? Peanut

Although this is the case, don't you find it annoying when it does auto play.

Sure these sites are kicking goals but does it add or detract from user experience?

adding or detracting from UX is less important here, when something is auto-playing you take action, either watching the same videos or leave them, it gives an important metric that whether your vids are worth wtaching, its data science which you can't fathom right now, or switching to others, or wandering around other portions of the site. About all, it gives a subtle impression that the site is animated and lively, which static content can't give (except gif images). the list can goes on.

Those sites only appeal to spam watchers. "Peanut". A decent site doesn't force a video on its watchers FACT.

As for your later comment about forcing the issue. A visitor shouldn't be forced into a decision based around a sales video that is rammed down their throats as soon as they arrive. I bounce instantly when this happens, this give you NO information about what my views on your video is. You seem to see potential customers as un savvy morons that can be drawn into buy things by forced actions...this is exactly the opposite in the Western world . I know in other counties they are years behind and old internet marketing practices are still being used. If FB are updating their link bait algo there is a very good reason.

I'd have to agree with you here Woomeister, audiences are far more perspective to marketing techniques and auto play is just plain irritating and reason enough to navigate away from a page.

I don't like video that starts on autoplay. It should be the user to decide wheter to play it or not. It's annoying to me.

I've got videos on all of my landing pages, definitely set to manual play.

There is nothing worse than having a video forced upon you when you've just arrived at a site.

Yes embeding video on website is a good idea. But if you're talking about a video that you created yourself and
posted to YouTube, containing 100% original material, such as a home movie of your child learning to ride a bicycle,
then you can of course embed it in your site (or sites) as you please.
If a video is not created by you, it means that someone else owns the copyright on that clip. The copyright owner has
the right to give you permission to republish the video or deny you the permission.

It depends on what the point of the video is?
Does it add value to the visitors? does it help you? If so, then why not?

Well it is proven that websites with videos embedded get longer views and can also boost your SEO.

Proof? You really ought to back that up with a reference to avoid the naysayers backlash.

I actually just hit your shopify link and a loud audio file started playing so I bounced!!! Rather ironic really.
