O.M.G. -- Please help - need new hosting company ASAP!!

I am going out of my mind. After sticking with HostGator for YEARS I left because they started to deteriorate with their tech support. Since then I've been bouncing around and now consider going back to HG in the hope that they might perhaps be better again?

I just left A Small Orange because tech support was impossible to process what I was saying. I signed up with Fat Cow. Bad idea. The first few times I called were ok, but now I am on hold for 20 minutes before I get to speak to someone whose accent I can barely understand and who contradicts himself and makes no sense.
(When I have a problem with WP it is usually not very complex.)

Does decent hosting exist with 24/7 tech support via phone and chat, and billing is monthly?

Or am I dreaming?

I don't know what your issues are - but could it be you are expecting too much from a hosting provider? You mention three hosting companies and the problem is the same with all - not enough support.

I'm sure people will post to bash HG and others hosts but maybe that's not the issue. Why would you need to contact support so often? Are you asking them to solve site problems as well as hosting issues?

Nor is it the hosting company's problem.

Wordpress is open source software, provided as a convenience. Doing so does not commit the hosting company to support that product.

Kay, please read what I wrote before you speculate. I specifically said my problems aren't complex. And where do you get the impression that I contact support "so often?"

Thanks Kay and Sid for your input. It's wonderful to get bashed by two such accomplished individuals who know everything and yet do apparently NOT know how to answer the one thing I actually DID ask for, which is a recommendation. But, sit on your precious knowledge, why don't you.

And just as an aside, Sid, no tech support has ever said that help with WordPress isn't part of their expertise. They are all trained in it. Yes, literally speaking, it's open source, but everybody uses WP these days for their sites, and they expect help from tech support when they need it. Jeez.

Sorry you felt like you were being "bashed". It certainly wasn't my intent, nor do I think that was Kay's, but she's a big girl and can respond for herself.

I never said that it wasn't part of their "expertise", just that it wasn't their responsibility.

Few of the hosting companies are obligated to offer any support for Wordpress. The only exception I can think of might be WPEngine managed hosting, or similar service. I don't have any first-hand experience with them, but if your issues are primarily WP related, maybe you would want to consider using them for your hosting needs.

Wrong. Hosting sites never give support in Wordpress. That's not to say that a support person might feel sorry for you and possibly help you, but they are under no obligation to do so, unless you signed-up and paid for WordPress 'managed' hosting and even then, each hosting company has different offerings from no actual support of the application, to they will fix anything that arrises.

Somehow I think you're one of those people that wants the world for $4.95 a month shared hosting.

      Read the terms of service.

I hate HostGator as much as anyone, but I have to give credit where it's due. They've done their job hosting my site with 99.9% or more uptime since 2009.

I've never thought to contact them for Wordpress issues since it's not their job. So, I tend to agree with Kay and Sid on that.

Maybe it's time to look at the common denominator of your support issues. If you need help with Wordpress, hire a developer/programmer.

To me, that indicates a number of support requests...and I wasn't dissing you when I asked why you need to contact host support often. It sounded "often" to me.

everybody uses WP these days for their sites, and they expect help from tech support when they need it. Jeez.
No, they don't. I've never asked hosting to help me with a WP problem - I go to WP help sites or the knowledge base or post here asking for help from marketers who know WP better than I do.

You can be angry at me - but if you have used multiple hosts and have the same support problem with each - maybe the problem isn't the hosting.

Finding a great web host is akin to finding a great restaurant. You look for one that has what you want, you ask for recommendations from others, you check it out online . . . but in the end . . . the only way you'll know for sure if you like the place is to try it out for yourself.

We all have different tastes and also different requirements for what we want to get out of the service. What is good for Jack may not be optimal for Jill.

I have been with HG for many years and they have always been responsive to my support needs. Everybody loves to bash HG and Godaddy - for my own needs, both have been good to me and quite inexpensive. But as others have said, they are not responsible for specific software support. There are numerous WordPress tutorials, forums, web sites, and freelancing experts that you should be turning to for help.

Lots of people bash HostGator, but I've been using them since 2008 and they are the only host I've ever used and I have been extremely happy with their service since day one.

Their customer service is still there, but it's not as good as it once was.

That said, they still have good customer service as far as hosting companies go. For $10 a month, I can't complain.

Sometimes they will help with WordPress related issues and sometimes they won't. It all depends on the rep you get.

If you are having lots of WordPress issues, though, it really is not the responsibility of the hosting company to get it straightened out for you or even help you with it in any way.

You would need to either search for the solution yourself or hire a WordPress expert.

Whenever I need custom work done to any of my blogs or websites I have a few people who I hire from Fiverr and for $5 or $10 I can always get the problem fixed. It's well worth it.

After reading these posts, I'm feeling quite fortunate. My host initially said they don't offer assistance with WP. But eventually, they started helping me and were quite respectful about it. Although, with my recent hacking issues, I think they're getting tired of seeing emails from me and are taking longer... or don't answer at all... and they aren't all WP queries.

As Steve B said, " . . . in the end . . . the only way you'll know for sure if you like the place is to try it out for yourself."

And as BigFrank said, "... I use MDD and would never refer this guy to them. I don't see where you'd be doing them any favors. lol" which is why I'm not going to give you my host name. Besides, they might stop helping me if someone else comes on board seeking the same support that they'd rather we sought elsewhere.

I've seen big boys swallowing up major providers. For example, Bluehost was purchased a while back and started to deteriorate in service.

However, i stuck it out w them and they are now upping their service.

In any event, they have Wordpress Optimized hosting now that caters directly to wp sites for faster loading, better security, etc.

Also, they have better service tech access for larger accounts.

    good luck.

I have been using Wordpress for 12 years. These days I know it like the back of my hand, but while I was learning it never once crossed my mind to ask my hosting company for help. A hosting company is exactly that, they HOST your websites, they don't tutor you with programming.

There are a ton of places where your can go for help: Wordpress Codex, The official Wordpress Support Forum, WP Help Forum, plus the Website Design sub-forum here is, to a large extent, dedicated to Wordpress.

Stop blaming your hosting companies. You area asking more of them than is their responsibility.

I have a couple of hosts I could recommend. It really depends on what you want to spend. I rely on GoDaddy and Blue host. Both offer Word press.
If you already have your web site both are good for just hosting.
Blue Host gets you with a lot of add-ons. Looks cheap but once you sign up you realize, not so much.
Hands down Go Daddy is my choice, they have cheap domains compared to Blue host who charges $ 11.00 per domain. Go Daddy will answer your phone call 24/7.

EIG is your problem. EIG owns Hostgator, A Small Orange, and Fatcow. A common thread of theirs is that after buying a hosting company, the service starts to deteriorate. You will still occasionally be put in touch with someone that can help and knows what they are doing. However, overall, their service, and equipment quality tanks. They start overselling servers. They are known for having long outages. You can search online for all of the problems people have had with EIG owned companies.

I used to love A Small Orange, and hoped that when EIG bought them they might be an exception. Then a forum I own was down for 5 straight days (along with virtually every VPS hosting account they had) without much of an explanation.

    Get away from them.

There is a pretty good list of most of the companies they own on their Wikipedia page.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endura...national_Group

My two favorites right now are StableHost and Geek Storage. You cannot go wrong with them... unless they someday sell to EIG.

Posting your affiliate link as a recommendation probably got your post deleted....

Mike - I don't think EIG is the problem in this case. I don't know of any host I've ever used that would frequently help me with my Wordpress problems.

If you've been through three hosting accts and have the same problem (not enough support) with each of them - look for the common denominator.

I have had plenty of hosts help me sort through issues relating to Wordpress. They are not going to help with layout issues or why a plugin is not working correctly, but I have had them help with a lot of things like database problems.

EIG is known for doing one thing well: providing lousy customer service.

I have had service issues with two of the hosts he named myself. It might be a user problem, but I would bet it is the hosts. Nobody is doing themselves any favors by trying to deal with anything owned by EIG.

Hosting anything you care about with EIG is just risky at this point.

Lots of people have gotten frustrated with Hostgator. It IS true that most hosts can't help with Wordpress issues. Hostgator started sending out messages to people about security, then pushing them to buy high-end software to protect them.

Alternatives are DreamHost, A2, SiteGround and (higher end) Liquid Web.

Just ask yourself first how much is budget, then you can find your hosting provider

I have had similar horrific experences with the companies you mentions plus a few more hosting companies. I don't know what you went through but I know what I have experienced and it's been a nightmare.

No solution here for a hosting company suggestion, but I just wanted to validate you because I too have had nightmare experiences. I am not a negative person or a trouble-maker. I finally decided to stay where I am because changing has not produced better results.

What this has forced me to do if figure out issues myself that I feel should have been hosting's responsibility. In the long run this has increased my own knowledge and made me stronger and increased my technical skills.

I'd draw your attention to shared plans from hosting.co.uk and ifastnet.com.
Their plans are well-prices and many useful resources are in them to help to run websites in a webmaster-friendly manner.

If you want reliable web hosting, buy a private server. Otherwise, you will always be at the mercy of someone else's equipment.

Something else I find interesting is a lot of the "hosting companies" are resellers. Some are resellers of resellers. Follow the trail upstream and you may be quite surprised who really owns the servers.

Unfortunately, it seems like you have run into the EIG problem. If you're not trying to spend five bucks a month and are more focused on a host that provides great service and attentive support, I would highly recommend checking out a host that I work with and use, Nexcess. The support is knowledgeable and helpful and 24/7. These guys don't treat you like a number and you're not going to be jammed onto an oversold server. Everyone, whether tiny shared plan or huge enterprise is treated the same and offered the same quality of service and support. Whatever way you go, I wish you luck.

I use StableHost (after formely being with Hostgator), and could not be happier. I've definitely experienced faster load speeds after switching to them.

You basically get what you pay for. If you want really great support from people who know wordpress, try Pagely. Their servers respond like wildfire!. I have been with them for quite some time and their support persons are better than wordpress developers. Other wordpress dedicated hosting that are okay are pressable and wpengine.

Been with Dreamhost.com ever since I left HostGator after the 2- to 3-day outage they had a few years back. Dreamhost even have an affiliate program and if you're a US non-profit, they'll give you shared hosting for FREE! Note that they use a proprietry interface instead of cpanel but it's pretty straightforward.

You may use Godaddy. I use both Godaddy and Hostgator, but my experience is that Hostgator has faster servers.
