Interviewing Experts - need a release?

I am going to interview a local ecom expert in the coming weeks and will use this information on my blog.

Do I need a release? Or should I provide/offer some kind of compensation?

    • Well said Katarina cause thats the only way you can appreciate him for his time and knowledge.

      You can take it a bit further by converting the interview into a product that you can both sales and share the profits within each other.

      This is optional anyway but can be very profitable when done right. Is completely up to you my friend.

  • Based on your post you already set this up so what did he/she say in regards to this. Do they want something or not. For an interview I would never offer money. although I would offer some type of link.

    • I haven't set-up anything yet.

      I was going to promote her products and will most likely turn this into my own product.

      This lady is really successful and I'd like to get the basics of her strategy and share with others.

      Also - she has had other interviews on YouTube, but I wanted to do my own.

  • A release is always a good idea, especially if you expect the product/item to be successful. I always do releases for interview type products.

    Much better to be crystal clear up front, than to have someone complain down the road and try and get a "cut" of your profits later.

    I'm assuming the only reason you are asking this is because you are afraid that if you ask, you won't get an interview. That's a very real possibility. But like I said - much better to take care of it in advance. The old adage 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' is very true.

  • You most definitely want a release! Always!

    Technically, you want a release for the talent (the interviewee, actor, or model) and a release for the location if it is not your home or business. If you do not have a release, the interviewee/actor/model or the location owner can pop up at any later time and ask you to remove the ad, article or video with their likeness or the likeness of their location and, without a release, you will have to comply.

    Also, make sure no trademarks are showing - if the guy is wearing a Nike t-shirt or a Disney poster is showing in the background, for example, the companies have the right to make you stop showing the ad. If it's educational, like for a class in school, though, you're ok.
