Whats the best free list builder for Wordpress?

I see everyone saying "build a list" as perhaps the most important part of having a blog. I've tried one of the free popup optin plugins but it looks like it pops up every single time, even if someone has already given their email. Maybe it would be better to just have a signup widget in the right hand column?

I don't know what would happen if people got a popup every single time they visited a page. Any advice is much appreciated.

I myself hate pop ups. I find them very annoying. So I never would get anything with a pop up myself. I am not sure how well they work, I just don;'t like them. I do have an opt in on my blog, on the left side.

Good ones will allow you to set a cookie so it pops up only once, or at an interval. You could also use an exit popup so it works only when they leave.

Just use a side bar opt-in. You can do it with basic HTML and thats will work.

If you really want a popup opt in for Wordpress, you can use the Faster IM Optin plugin. It depends on your audience though and you have to decide whether it will do you more harm or good. FasterIM Opt-In : A Simple Yet Powerful Opt-in Plug-in for Wordpress

Apart from that, as has been said, the easiest way is just to add your opt in to the sidebar. Just make sure that you add raw html to any text widgets you use, and not javascript, as adding scripts to text widgets has been known to irreparably destroy entire blogs.

But, if you actually meant a manager for the mailing list itself, rather than an opt in box, my advice is don't even bother with a "free" solution. I have spent countless hours looking for a "free" mailing list solution to work with or without Wordpress, and at the end of the day you'll end up with more money in your pocket if you just sign up with Aweber or GetResponse.

The free lists, I've found, take much longer to work with, are much more error prone, and just don't give you the list building capability you have with a paid service. List building is a long term process, so it's much better to just pay the money and build on a solid foundation.

If you don't think you can make your money back by building your list, you're probably not quite ready for list building and should work on some other strategies for the time being until you have the money and the experience to be able to make your list building pay off.

Wow, that was a longer post than expected. Phew!
