A Lesson I Just Learned The Very, Very, Very Hard Way About The New Warrior Forum

Ouch!

This one HURT.

BIG TIME.

I just spent the last 40+ minutes writing a
MOSTER post about copywriting, with some
internet marketing and huge tips and ideas
tossed into the mix.

It was AWESOME. Words just flowed. It
would have been the post of posts. Seriously,
it was some great stuff. I held nothing back.

I clicked on the submit button.

B O O OO O O O M!

I got a screen saying that I need to login.

Noooo waaaayyyy....

I clicked on the back button... my writing
and all my hard work was GONE.

With the new forum, I had no idea that
you'd be logged out after a certain amount
of time of 'inactivity'.

Lesson:

If you are writing a long post or long reply
to help another Warrior, COPY everything
you wrote and put it into a text doc before
you submit just in case.

Man... it still stings...

Ouch! If it helps any, I feel your pain.

Good tip though and well worth remembering.

I keep getting logged out as well. I'm sorry about your post, perhaps you will be able to re-write it, this time using an external editor?

Would love to read it =)

I have an ice bag on my head...

I've only had that happen one other time
a long time ago on another forum. Same
deal... wrote a marathon of a post and
        it timed out.

        Won't let that happen again.

For those who are copywriters, you know
what I'm talking about... you just know
        when something is really good....

        Arrrrgghhh!

And if others got logged out for a split
second, then maybe my post was just
so powerful it caused a glitch on the
server. LOL Need to find a way to
laugh about this somehow! Oh well.

Man let me tell you something, a long time ago I was writing up a report and thought it was just going to be brilliant. I never thought about saving every so often.

Right when I thought it was good enough the electricity went out. I lost the whole damn thing and just sat there staring at a blank screen in disbelief. Never could get all those words back either, I just went completely blank.

It stung bad enough that I ALWAYS after that saved every few minutes. Until I found apps that would save every few seconds automatically, like treepad. Now everything I write goes into one of those apps first.

        I never forgot that lesson...

        Allen

P.S. I also have a habit of of hitting control A and copying every post I write as well. Just in case something goes wrong when I hit submit. I just realized that when I copied this one :-)

Major ouch. It almost feels like you lose a part of your life after losing something like that you've poured that much of yourself and time into.

This used to happen to me but I have a plugin for FireFox that saves any text area you're wrtiing in

I'm not sure if InFormEnter does it or if I have another one that does it but it's a lifesaver!

I think there's an issue with getting logged out. I come here and it says I'm logged in, then I read a thread and I see the login box as if I'm not logged in.

Luckily none of my brilliant prose has been lost due to this- someone upstairs must be taking care.

I learned that lesson one heck of a long time ago - when every button I pushed was always the wrong one. Got to be a habit that if I'm going to write something long, it's wordpad, cut and paste. Also helps with very slow connections.

Never heard of: Treepad: Personal Information Manager, Notes Organizer, Word Processor, PIM, Database and more!

          All others...

I appreciate your comments. Hope this helps
and serves as an important reminder.

Like Allen, I'll never get those words back.

But.... I can promise that'll never happen to

I also lost work to a power outage.

I then went and bought one of those big ass office battery backup/surge protectors that will allow the computer to run for about an hour on just battery power.

About 2 weeks later I was deep in writing mode again when all of the sudden my monitor went blank, the computer shut down and my desk lamp turned off.

I looked around and realized that the overhead room light was still on. I then remembered my shiny new battery backup and wondered what could of gone wrong...

Turns out there is a big "kill" switch on it that turns off the power immediately...and my cat was sitting on it.

            True story.

I had a techie tell me once to "save early, save often". I've never forgotten that. I DO like the applications that do the saving for you, but I don't have very many of those.

          What does control A do?

              Ctrl+A is select all text.
              Ctrl+C is copy to clipboard.
Ctrl+X is cut text and put it in clipboard.

I use control V and C all the time,

Now I feel REALLY stupid, because that's how I copy/paste (my husband does the right-click thing, instead). It's been a long day, lol.

Don't feel bad bro....I recently spent $27 on Elance just to have some dude named Habib set up my profile on this new Warrior Forum..

The new forum wasn't designed to be "you'ser" friendly for guys like me...but rather then getting angry..and trying to fight city hall....I got me some out of state help, baby!

I kid you not......I spent $27 American Dollars...and he gave me a live signature link too...for no extra charge.

Mock me if you wish...but consider this: I have an invoice......for $27 dollars for services rendered.

I am the only Warrior who now has a legitimate $27 dollar TAX WRITE OFF--- simply by outsourcing my Warrior profile to India...via my main man Habib!

Yank the power cord out of the wall jack....wait a few seconds to calm down...and plug the bitch back in...and start over again.

When my computer freezes...I feel it's taunting me. Baiting me. Screwing with my head!

I fight fire with fire....by ripping it from it's power source.....and it's a strategy that literally makes my computer say hey:

                    Hi,

On the subject of Ctrl + functions, one I use a lot when doing tasks repetitively -

If you're trying to copy a few words from a passage, and taking your hand off the keyboard and moving them onto the mouse is inconvenient OR using the 'hold left mouse button and drag to highlight' is inconvenient/difficult, use these two -

Ctrl + the directional left/right arrow key = move the cursor one word at a time

then move the finger on Ctrl to also straddle shift (just above it) and use -

Ctrl + shift + left/right = highlight the words one word at a time

I can't be bothered to explain the situations where I use this, but I use these two in combination a lot.

While we're (not) on the subject, does anyone here use a trackball rather than a mouse? I converted about a year or so ago and haven't looked back...it definitely saves me time doing repetitive tasks.

PS Thanks Martin, I need to learn more of these.

              been there, done that

specially in ohter game forums wher you quote different parts of someone and end up answering up to 10 small quotes and it dissapears after pressing submitt

advise is to copy it in the window you writing it in before hitting submit button.....and hope you dont loose powersupply

          ONCE.

After that painful "OH NO!" moment, I got the proverbial 'rude awakening' and it's never happened again.

Although I simply write [or dump stuff] into a NotePad file name 'DateNotes' with 'Date' being today's date, nevertheless I have become EXTREMELY disciplined about doing this any time I am working on something that is, as you say, 'important.'

Works well; learned to do that just like what happened to you. I think I cried about it at the time.

Killer advice, have had the same thing happen to me, even on the OLD WF. "windows update" while I was busy with kids, and any number of reasons.

If you're writing a lot, and you want to keep it - start in a word doc, notepad - or something - don't depend on the forum to keep it... that's for sure!

      Thanks!

      SPLORF!

I looked and looked, but I couldn't find that one amongst the recommendations from Microsoft...

I actually use similar methods myself, if I manage not to just take a hammer to it.

But I need to elaborate on this part -

Yank the power cord out of the wall jack
You can't just yank the plug out of the socket - in order for this method to be effective, you MUST actually run across the room with the computer in your arms in order to remove the plug from the wall-socket...

This thread offers a lot of good advice on saving what you're planning to post ouside of the forum before trying to submit.

I do it myself, cause it's happened to me too now and then on different forums.

And, it always seems to happen when you've really put some work into what you've been writing.

But, what I don't find in this thread, is someone mentioning alternative solutions to the problem. I've been a member of vBulletin-based forums where this has been a big problem, and vBulletin-based forums where it has not been a problem at all.

So, I'm relatively sure that this can be fixed by changing the value of some vBulletin option, or by applying some more or less wellknown hack to the forum script.

I don't know what ought to be done, but I'm sure some forum expert knows how to fix this.

P.S. Oops! Almost forgot to save this post elsewhere before submitting it.

Thanks a lot for dredging up the bad memories I have from a very similar incident!

I had worked for hours. I created a lengthy document. It was great work. My best stuff. And just when I was almost done... Windows locked up my computer.

(The theme from "Titanic" begins to play...)

I could still see part of my precious document on the screen, but couldn't retrieve it. It was as if my document was screaming for me to save it. But I could not...

Now, whenever I write anything, I not only save the document, I also save a backup of that document! I also have TWO backup hard drives. I'm not giving Windows another chance to bite me in the butt.

            Johnny

P.S. I think I need to go lay down for a while...

Dear oh dear, I can't believe people still have this problem.

It's NOT a "bug", it's a "cookie timeout", which most forums have.

If you really must login and out when you come here - and if there is only you using the computer why bother?? - then when you next login if you check that little 'remember me' box you can take as long as you like being 'inactive' and you won't be logged out.

If you don't select it, after a certain period, (could be 15 minutes or less) the board thinks you are gone. So if you've been reading a long thread or writing a long post when you next click something the board knows you are back. However, because you didn't click 'remember me' the board has no idea who you are and insists you login again.

Really, just make sure 'remember me' is selected and it'll remember who you are until you physically logout.

Touch wood, I have never lost an important post because of this.

A similar frustration I did have was downloading a massive video file on a slow connection and just before it was completed there was a power cut.

That was when I installed Download Manager, which has a 'resume download' feature.

OMG, KK, the joys of grandchildren [I have one, Kaylie, who is now 5]...

And I do exactly what Bev just said... in fact I hit CTRL+S after every paragraph -- even after every sentence at times -- and the tiny part of a second that it takes for this 'insurance' is neglible...

I even unplug my PCs when a storm is coming, and my laptops run on battery power so I don't have to worry about losing data or lightning strikes [and yes I do have surge protection on every PC.]

These times that our PC or some website 'betrays' us when we least expect it is one reason IMO that CTRL+S should be our mantra every time we sit in front of out PCs... as well as diligently timed backups.

                    just 1/2 that?

Test it out.... think about what has happened
to you that others can relate to, or do some
research on Yahoo Answers to find common
issues/problems in the niche you're in and
write some articles/blogs about the problem
using a unique spin. Basic stuff, but things
that I'm sure many of us tend to forget
and/or it gets diluted by the 3,281 other
                    things we're doing.

I use PSPad, it is a free text and php, css etc... editor. It just doesn't allow you to save every X minutes/seconds but it also saves backup of your work into a seperate backup folder you designate.

I had times like what allen mentioned where something happened and POOF.. but I checked the backup folder and damn if there wasnt the most recent version of the work backed up. SWEET!

Yeah, when you are writing a LONG post you should use something else OR at the very least copy it ctrl+c to the clip board as you write so in case of something happening you can just paste it back.

                    Two solutions for saving during your creation of a post;

                    1. I don't know if everyone have seen that when clicking on UserCP in the menu line, apart from an extended "User Control Panel" menu, you also can see a "Personal Notepad" window, being able to contain up to 65535 characters.

And it has a "Save Notepad" button below.

Using this solution for drafts should do the trick. I would try to save after the first sentence or so, just to be sure I'm not already logged out when starting on my post. After that you just hit the "Save Notepad" button now and then. Then, If you get logged out during one of your more time consuming thoughts, everything up to the last click on the "Save Notepad" button should have been saved inside WF, just waiting for you to log in again.

                    2. In the "Reply to Thread" window just click

Ctrl+A (marks everything in the window)

                    followed by

Ctrl+C (copys what's marked to Windows' clipboard)

                    now and then.

This method isn't such a good idea if you

                    * use these key combinations to copy and paste inside your post.
                    * your PC crashes or loses power.

Of course it could be done this way, but I've been to vBulletin forums that does not have this problem, even though you don't check "Remember Me", so there must be a way to solve this without evey member having to think about this themselves.

I suppose that would be a better solution for most members.

Well for me, even if the 'remember me' is selected,
I'll still be playing it safe from now on if my post is
          longer than a few sentences.
