Starting out with: Products vs. Services

There's something great about selling digital products.

You build it once and it keeps working for you. Whether it's a PDF ebook, course, or software; it scales. You may update it every once in a while but the bulk of the work stops after the upfront investment.

Now, the good thing about services is it allows you to earn something substantial fast. Say, someone reaches out to you because they trust your internet marketing skills, it's easy to find a setup that works and earn significantly. You just have to be flexible enough to serve the demand.

But services come with the downside of lack of scalability. It's somehow in between of getting a job or selling your own products.

In the long run, I argue that Products is definitely the way to go, but the challenge is gaining enough traction for full time income. For most people running self-funded businesses, it may take too long before the products you make are enough to replace what you'd earn from a job.

For those looking to earn full time income, would you suggest:
1. Going straight to selling products
2. OR begin by selling services first

Every person wants to become an affiliate FIRST so that they learn how things work in the affiliate world.

You have to learn how to market, how to build a list and follow up with them effectively, and other things.

Once you make money and master almost every aspect, then you can create your own product or service.

Confusing ?? Because a a Product is defined by being a Service or Good

Hi: That's kind of an open ended question. What service are you proposing to sell?

    1. If you are a good copywriter or if you can hire a good one then you can start with your own product.
    2. If you are good at sales then you can start with your own product.

Most people start by selling an affiliate product. After getting experience and a growing a list they eventually move into creating and selling their own product. The process of creating and selling your own product is more massive than it looks.

Research selling your own product. How quickly can that be done? Where will you sell it? How will you handle customer service? Customer support? orders? returns?

Research providing a service. How quickly can that be done? Where will you sell your services?

How quickly do you want to make money? Do you want to scale your business or keep it small?

There are tons of questions that need to be answered before a solid answer can be provided for selling a product first or a service first.

If you have a particular skill that is in demand then selling that service first may be best. You may be able to develop a product around the service you provide.

If you don't have a specific skill, then selling a product through affiliates would be best.

    Good luck,

    Dan

I may have read the OPs post but you seem to contradict yourself by asking the questions ?

A way to scale a service would be to outsource it. I have seen many online fitness coaching programs do this.

You get a customized diet and workout plan, plus unlimited VIP email access from the main trainer and their "team." And they charge premium prices (4 figures).

I know this can't be done in all niches but it is a very smart way to get the best of both worlds. You make a very generous profit while the amount of time you actually spend working is reduced.

It's all about being smart about it and creating systems.
