I feel like the actual human beings in my life wouldn't understand this, so I feel like admitting it to all of you so that I redo my wayward domain-buying ways:

I've been guilty of:

buying domain names with no purpose other than owning them (what I called domain hoading for those of you who have seen A&E's tv show)
Believing that getting $1 PPC revenue over 1 year was somehow justification that the domain name renewal was worth it. Umm, math anyone?
Buying multiple related domain names with no purpose
Forgetting to undo automatic renewal on Godaddy

Thankfully over the last six months I've scrubbed my domain holdings down from over 100 to about 20. Feels a lot better, but I still have a ways to go before I can call myself a new man.

Okay, now I feel better! Rip on me if you want, I deserve it!

I do have a few myself. But nothing that justifies being on A&E. Every time I see that show, it makes me want to clean my house. I would say, create what every it is you plan on doing with your business and buy the domain last. That way you will only buy when you actually need one.

LOL ... I understand completely. I have been guilty of the same. Fortunately, I made enough on two of them to compensate for all the domains that are completely useless that I bought. They are all expiring now and I'm letting them go except for a few select ones. Now I'm registering them as I need them for an actual site. I'm cured.

I used to purchase domain names on an impulse but after winding up with too many things to manage I am now very careful when it come to choosing domain names. If I get the urge to buy a domain name unless its a dictionary one word domain name like "chocolate" which will never happen, I hold off on buying it. I write the domain name down and I develop a plan for it.

If I still like the domain name and the plan for it the next day I write and design content for it.

If I am still interested and actively creating content for it for at least two days straight - I go ahead and buy the domain name.

Its a good tactic for me and it keeps me from spending money and winding up with undeveloped projects.

hahahaha, I was always short on cash when I needed to buy a website, so I hadn't had this problem.

But I am guilty to have kept a website over years that was really ****ty, my first trial ever, but that is over now, hahahaha

I have domains sitting on my hosting account with nothing on them, leaving money on the table (not good at all)

Anyone who can think of and register a domain name as long as there are no copyright violations has the right to make that investment.

Buying a domain name from someone is simple. You make an offer, if accepted - you pay, they push the domain to you. It is another legitimate method of making money online.

I have a lot of domain names as well. Worst case scenario is create a website and flip it for a modest profit.

It's a good long term plan, now with Google's caffeine older domains will be more valuable. Buy a domain, have it there for over a year and then start building content, this will help in the ranking as older domains have more weight.

So all those domains might now find a purpose in life

I mean godaddy makes it really easy to buy a bunch of domains for a cheaper price, so why not take this offer?

And Aylov is right, as older domains are more valuable it is just a matter of fact to buy in bulk to have them once you need them.

Ah, the domain buying disease. I have a touch of that!

Whenever I think of a niche I want to target and find a good name available - I grab it - before the hoard of other people lining up to buy it do!

I only have about 30 domains but most of them are not being used yet - but I have big plans.

Buying domains is fun!

I have 38 right now. Sometimes I'll try to sell off a few I'm not using, but usually I talk myself into keeping them because they are aged... and perfect for an idea I have in mind.

The hard part is DOING all the projects I have in mind so the domains aren't empty! or sitting with a 2-3 blog on it.

You know you have too many domains when you look up a cool domain name, get mad when you see someone already owns it, look at the whois and discover that you are the owner.

LOL i have been there! It used to be fun to register new domain without much thought..
specially those ,.info domains really made me crazy man to register many of them...

But it has changed a little...i mean i feel like STUPID, when i get domain renewal email
from Namecheap for a domain which i have bought and never worked on that..and now
i feel like having no interest on that domain.... so every time i have to renew or let it
go a useless/unused domain, i promise to myself to be very Conservative when it comes
to register a new domain!!!

Ugghhhh.....i have about 50 domains right now, some of which I KNOW are worth money, but I am too lazy to get out there and try to sell them....I got a professional appraisal recently that put one of my domains at $2-3k.....still haven't gotten the gumption to email a bunch of sites to try to sell it...terrible

I'm hearing you. I always justify it by doing all the keyword/competition research etc. Then it just sits on the shelf unused. What's even sadder is that I can't bring myself to drop it when it comes time to renew - can anyone say "addiction"?

I'm not the only one that gets a wild niche ideas and want to register any
all variations of.

I'm still trying to complete sites and Trying to stay away from registering anymore, at least until I can complete a few sites. I'm getting there slowly.
The sad part is when a bunch need renewed at one time.
Learning to space out a little better.

I used to have about 15, now I'm only down to 8, I think?...and it's not because I didnt need them anymore, good ole godaddy had the nerve to revoke them when it was time to renew and I didnt pay.

  I started off like you too, man I spend so much money on domain names that I did not use.
  
  that is why i have to do my keyword research first, before buying. Then I will use to keyword research tool to help me find the right domain name to buy.

I think I have about 40 domain names. I usually have a purpose when I buy them... The problem is that about 85% of the ideas that I buy the domain names for I never follow through on. I tend to have too many ideas at once so I buy domain names like crazy. When I focus on one project I never come back to any of the others.

  Buying domains is not really the problem,but
  knowing what to do with all of them.
  Unless you are a full time domainer,
  i do not not think you need much domain
  no matter attractive the idea might be.
  
  So marketers make cool money buying and
  selling domains full time.
  I think they do well cos that is what they only do.

I have 140 There's nothing wrong with owning a lot of domains (I know a lot of domainers with thousands of them), the problem is when they have very little (if any) value.

But yeah, domaining is a field that I really enjoy hence I'm happy enough to own a bunch of domains
