PewDiePie makes $15 million year on YT and is pissed and says traffic down on Youtube

I was reading USA Today, this morning. He is complaining because YT seems to have altered their Algos and Traffic including his has started to dwindle some.

YT totally disputes this

Pew says this will be the death of many YT Channels. Recently he said he would discontinue his Channel when he hit 50 million Subs. Turns out it was a Hoax. He didn't retire it when hit this number.

Why would he when he pulls in over $40K day thru Ad and Sponsorship Revenue ??

If the algorithm change is correct then the decline of some channels means the growth of others.

It is truly amazing. I have never heard of this person before so I tried to watch one of his videos and thought. "this is really stupid" but, if he is making that kind of cash then go for it.

Anyone with young kids will know names like Pewdiepie, DanTDM,Stampy,Ssundee etc....

These Youtubers are like rockstars to them and so the massive following....

Lookup other names like Casey Neistat and Phil Defranco and you'll be shocked at the money these people are making....

I don't think most (or any) would have a problem with that, as long as it didn't affect them, which I think is reasonable.

That being said, I do think PewDiePie is way overreacting. I doubt established Youtubers will be completely screwed.

That's the thing about it. If he has all those subscribers he should just focus on doing his thing which is providing valuable content to them and not focus on any YT changes that may affect his search results. In his case he built it then they came.

Even if that money does eventually dry up, he's made so much already that he could retire and not have to work another day in his life. This is assuming he knows how to budget his money.

The subscribe button now on youtube is as useful as the like button on facebook pages. No-one will watch your videos unless he'll double subscribe to you which no-one does.

It's not about how much money he's making, it's about if he's right or wrong. I have 10k subs on my channel and I got around 5k views on each upload, now I get 1000 if I am lucky enough.

It's not wise of youtube to add to my homepage "recommended" videos I've never subscribed to, instead of videos I've subscribed. On related? I get it. But not on my homepage. If they continue doing that they can remove the subscribe button completely.

Pewdiepie isn't the only one who has seen a traffic drop. A lot of other big youtube names have seen the same thing. It's a very big concern considering this is their bread and butter.

I'm actually kind of surprised at some of the responses here saying he should just deal with it. There have been many threads on WF from people who have seen a sudden drop in traffic on their websites. It's a very valid concern. Why should Youtube be any different?

For those who don't know who Pewdiepie is, he's a gamer that records himself playing different video games, often adding commentary and video edits that can make the videos entertaining to those into gaming (which is a massive, profitable niche).

It's kind of hard to feel sorry for someone who is earning millions of dollars from a business that has very little overall overhead.

I'm not going to knock the guy, though, because it's pretty amazing what he's done. Personally, I don't like his videos. They annoy the crap out of me. Obviously, though, I'm in the minority there because he has millions of people who love his videos.

At any rate, it's funny this thread came up when it did because last night I was completely blown out of the water when I found a channel on YT that also has millions of subscribers.

I happened to land on a video that he put out only days ago and it already had views into the millions.

I start watching the video and I'm totally puzzled as to why it's so popular. The camera quality is good, but the editing is not all that, and the content is somewhat ridiculous.

It basically consists of showing a guy's hands as he heats up a chef's knife with 3 blowtorches until the blade is red hot, and then proceeds to slice through different objects, the finale being a full plastic bottle of Coca-Cola. He never even speaks throughout the video. There's some annoying music in the background, though.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not hating at all. These people are making tremendous amounts of money from these videos. I have to respect that.

I don't think the ad blocker software apps can block every ad on YT. I use AdBlock 3.8.2 for Chrome which is one of the most popular blockers, and still some ads get through. I could be wrong about this, but I also heard that some ads pay a certain amount of money per 1000 impressions, whether they are blocked by an ad blocker or not. I'll admit that I don't have a lot of knowledge in that department because I don't monetize any of my videos.

At any rate, these people are killing it!

Now, I'm not big into video marketing myself, only because I simply don't have the time it would dedicate the time necessary to YouTube. I just have too many other things going on, and 90% of my time is spent on list building, as that is my bread and butter.

However, I have all of the equipment, software, and knowledge necessary to make great videos. I bet if I was just starting out and I decided to create a business plan which would be built 100% around nurturing a YouTube channel, I'm 98% positive I could succeed.

The reason I say that is not to be a braggart, but to point out that there is really NO REASON why anyone with a decent digital camera, a copy of Sony Vegas (or if you want to go the free route, DaVinci Resolve), and a little bit of creativity, couldn't have a successful YouTube channel.

I have a friend who collects baseball/football//Pokemon/Magic cards, and he has a pretty decent following and all he does is film himself opening new packs of cards and then showing off what cards he got to the camera. He only started about 8 months ago and he already has close to 6000 subscribers. His average video has anywhere from 25,000 - 30,000 views. He even has one with almost 50,000 views. Now, that might not sound like a lot compared to the YouTube "whales," but bear in mind he only puts in about 4-5 hours a week working on his channel, and he uses Windows Movie Maker Live to edit!

This just goes to show you that starting an online business does not have to be complicated and super technical. If you happened to have an extra room in your house or even half a garage to work with you could really make a nice little video studio for yourself.

Another aspect of video marketing that makes it an attractive way to build an online business is that there are just so many niches you can pick from. I'm willing to bet there are literally tens of thousands of niches and sub-niches that you could get into. Just about everyone has a hobby or hobbies, and that's the best place to begin if you want to be a video marketer. It's actually going to allow you to have fun while working. After all, isn't that really what we all want?

Other advantages include the fact that you will have the ability to drive traffic to a squeeze page or a blog so you can build a list. You don't even really need your own website. You could set up a Facebook page instead and make a squeeze page right inside of that. This would also give you the opportunity to cross promote by using Facebook Live to put exclusive videos on that can be used to let your fans know about your YT channel and vice-versa. Once you start making a little bit of ad revenue from YT, you could even start experimenting with sponsored posts on Facebook & Instagram.

I guess I went off on a little bit of a tangent there, but I actually get excited thinking about ways to open more income streams online. I'm also a firm believer that you should open as many income streams as possible when you are an Internet Marketer. Some streams are bound to dry up on you from time to time, so it's good to have many others flowing so you don't take as much of a hit financially.

In the end, I have to take my hat off to people who are crushing it on YouTube. It does take a certain amount of creativity and originality to blow up that big, and let's not forget that you need to have a great work ethic. I don't want people to get the wrong idea when I say that it's a great way to succeed online. It is, but that doesn't mean it's easy, either. No matter what kind of business you get into, the direct result of your level of success will always depend on how much time and effort you put in.

I never heard of the guy and I'm not into gaming at all but I just took a look at a couple of his videos.

I don't play games because I hate trying to figure them out and suck at it anyway.

Hats off to PewDiePie. Dude is crushing it no doubt! I just hope he has been smart enough to build his own list from all those followers, because building a business solely on a platform that you do not own or control is risky business! I've been hearing about YouTube channels getting axed left & right these days without warning, and as we know, no one is too big to fall under the thrash of Google. There's No Mercy!

Oh no, someone is earning money, online, which is kind of the purpose of this forum.

I don't understand why people hate on him. You can agree with him, you can not, but what he's doing is working. He found a working formula and he refined it to almost perfection. I admit that his videos are puerile and sometimes, downright stupid. On the other hand, there are 51.000.000 people who considered his "puerile and stupid" videos worthwhile for their time.

And isn't this what information marketing is? You give what the market wants, not what you want. You can say that his videos sucks but the numbers are on his side. Some people are in the business of creating content that they like and some people are in the business of earning money. You can guess in which he is.

You guys forget that the market is NOT you. The market may have completely different perceptions and outlooks on life. You guys forgot that there are many good, Oscar like movies that earn less than the latest Adam Sandler romantic comedy. You guys forgot that a girl showing her body in a video and having a song about booze and sex will outsell real talents in the music industry, not by a small margin, but by multiples.

PewDiePie knows what he is doing. Maybe he got lucky in the start, as timing and positioning is important but he recognized that he stumbled upon a gold mine and now he's earning money with almost mathematical precision. He knows what headlines pull and what doesn't pull. He knows the bad jokes that will get the video shared and he knows that there is no such thing as bad publicity - as YouTube doesn't judge him by the quality of his video, only by the traffic he delivers.

So instead of saying bad things about him, I would pick up a pen and a notebook and I would start taking notes.

      Thank you!

The irony is lost on most people in this thread.

And people here don't seem to realize the amount of time he spends on his videos. I don't watch him, but I watch some other gaming youtubers with 1 million + subscribers. They make multiple videos per day. Then they have edit them, add in whatever special effects and so forth. They often work 12+ hours per day.

If they don't keep the quality up and post daily, subscribers get mad and unsubscribe.

This is hardly a passive income.

Further, I doubt anyone has taken the time to research the other stuff Pewdiepie does. He has his own video game out on Android and iOS, He's written a book. He's involved in other projects too.

Pewdiepie has mastered the art of branding. We can all learn from him. If you don't like videos about gaming, fine, you're not his target audience then. But that in no way minimizes what he's done. He found a niche with a strong demand.

And regarding his "complaining" about a huge drop in viewers, yeah, he has every right to. I see a lot of threads on this forum from people who saw a sudden drop in visitors on their websites and get angry by it. It's a valid concern, even for Pewdiepie.

RogozRazvan has hit the nail on the head.

I'm sure he'll figure out how to move on to other things. Or just accept the algo change and roll with it. It took a massive amount of work to build up his following, so I can see why he's pissed. Points to the plus and minus of building one someone else's platform.

This just proves something again that has been true for years, long before the Internet...

"Stupid" and "Profitable" have never been mutually exclusive.

When I was working my way through college, one of the sales reps that came into the store got into a discussion with my boss. The end result was a bet that my boss could sell dog crap at a profit.

He took the 'harvest' from his yard, distributed it among several paper bags, and taped a cheapo lighter and set of instructions to the bag. He sold them as "practical joke kits" for $5 each. The instructions read "1. Place bag on victim's front steps. 2. Use lighter to ignite bag. 3. Ring doorbell. 4. Hide and watch the fun."

He set up a table at the local flea market and sold a couple of dozen of them in an hour or so.

Like I said, stupid and profitable are not mutually exclusive.

If you really want an example of how easy it can be to crush it on YouTube then all you have to do is take a look at this video.

It's from a YouTuber called "MrGear."

It was uploaded about 4 hours ago and has already hit half a million views. This guy makes tons of videos exactly like this one and he has over 4 million subscribers and almost every video he puts out gets views into the multi-millions.

If you are able to heat up a chef's knife with a blowtorch and then cut through every day household items, you can make a killing on YouTube.

That's why when I get emails from people explaining how difficult it is to make money online or how "it doesn't work" or how "making money online is a big scam," I have to sit back and have a little chuckle.

I swear that ANYBODY with half a brain and a little bit of creativity can succeed online. Whether it be list building, blogging, video marketing, product creation, Kindle publishing, social media marketing, etc, all it takes is an idea, a desire to succeed, and a lot of hard work. If you want it bad enough, you can have it.

Let me put it this way. If someone can heat up a knife and slice through household objects and become a six figure YouTube marketer, then I'm sure that just about anyone can figure out how to make themselves a few thousand dollars a month from the Internet.

    Enjoy!

      Hey Niche,
I do agree. The only thing is most of the people I know ( friends, family) love to talk all day about this stuff. But thats just half of it. Because none of them actually puts any of it into Action.

That's why most just do not succeed with this stuff. When the Videos fail to Rank they just give up. Or many of them do not even have the motivation to do that first video.

But they will talk ALL day about with a beer in one hand and the remote in the other lol

I cannot stand him and do not understand his popularity, but the kids used to watch him a good bit. They have moved on to other gamers and channels now though.

And by the way, the fact that I cannot stand him doesn't mean I don't appreciate what he has built.

It's interesting about some of them complaining about YouTube. I have started to notice that Twitch is doing more and more to attract gamer streams but also some of these streamers that are not solely gamers.

For those not familiar with Twitch.tv, it is site dedicated to live gamer streams.

They now have an IRL stream, where people just do shit in real life and broadcast it. There are talk shows, poker channels, and a host of other things.

There is a huge market out there for streamers and people are looking to jump in.

I believe Amazon bought Twitch about 2 years ago for close to $1 billion. I bet in another 3-4 years, it will be worth double that.

PewdiePie knows his worth and has no intention of jumping off the gravy train that is YouTube.

The amazing thing is the mainstream media, as desperate as it is for anything approaching a story, took this hype and reported it as something that was actually likely to happen.

    They all got punked.

Anyone that believes Pewdiepie is going to walk away from a 5 figure per day income is naive at best.

My nephew is the reason I know who PewDiePie is (I like video games but I find a lot of the people doing commentary on video games pretty dumbed down in how they interact with their audience). I think people watch videos of people playing games more than they actually play games these days!

"Ooh look it's someone playing a game"

"How about you buy the game and play it? You know, interact with something and use your brain?"

"No... that sounds too much like hard work. It's more fun just consuming"

    Consume. Consume. Consume.

It's amazing how long kids spend watching YT videos (seriously it is insane - bordering on worrying levels of random content consumption). It's also amazing what people create channels around. One channel involves creating a fort in a supermarket/shop (etc) and hiding in the racking overnight - I kid you not.

How is it any different from those who spend hours watching sports, but don't actually play the sport they watch?

I'm pretty amazed at the number of hours people will spend watching a ball go from one end of the field to the other.
