Any suggestions for a good free (or minimal cost) theme that would be great for a blog centered around an outdoor hobby (like hunting, hiking, etc.)? I used to have a similar website, but I just used one of the free themes. I know it's a broad question, but with so much to choose from I thought I'd throw it out there.

Just use a simple theme, change the background color to hunter green, add a simple logo for branding. Done.

Try something like the old coleman.com style/look with earth tone colors, not their new site/theme.

It took me about 2 weeks to find something that I really like. You can try a magazine type of theme one that I like is colormag.

    Take a look at http://www.thrivetheme.com.

They offer some excellent themes that could be used for this niche. They can really be used for any niche by changing a few of the stock images.

    You may try the following:

    1. Elegant Themes

    2. Ink Themes

    3. Kaira Themes

    4. Fresh Store Builder Themes and

    5. Woo Commerce Themes

But my overall favourite - if I may be honest and which you may or may not agree - are Ink and Woo Commerce Themes.

Come Thanksgiving and Xmas, they always give you heavy discounts.

Not just on 1 theme but a bundle and an entire annual membership in which you can download ALL their themes

Themeforest should be a great option for best WordPress themes. You can also check Mythemeshop, Genesis or Thrive themes as well.

It is pricey, so I don't know if you want to go this route, but, I really like Thesis from diythemes

Free WordPress themes can be loaded with exploit threats and other nasty things. Do some research on this. You'll be shocked.

If you're not willing to invest a few dollars in a premium theme, you may want to reconsider your career path. :-)

I would personally use Mythemeshop. They have quality themes and are pretty affordable. You can get some deals on themes every now and again too.

I think ThriveThemes would be one of the best options if you can go for it, but it is quite pricey, so Mythemeshop is a cheaper alternative.

Other members have mentioned some good options too such as ThemeForest and Elegant Themes.

Overall, I definitely recommend a premium theme over a free theme. Take a look at some of these sites and see what suits you.

I would just search the wordpress site for free themes that would fit the colors for the niche (in this case outdoors - green, brown, blue, etc)

Last time I checked you can make virtually any WordPress theme - virtually any color. :-)

I'll say it, again. Use free themes at your peril. Nothing in life is free. Everything has a price. I consider experiencing pain, paying a price.

I personally would ask yourself a simple question.

what do you want to do with this site?

If your looking to scale up the business, then i suggest investing in a paid theme, it was also mentioned earlier, with free themes you will have problems with hacking etc.

You can customize themes for your company colours, woo commerce are pretty good, studio press themes are great themes.

Have a look and check them out, thrive themes are another one, theme forest think these have already been mentioned.

    hope this helps you

Spend the money as mentioned above. My favorite lately has been the Jupiter theme by artbees. You can add different templates to the theme, and they have a few that will fit exactly what you want. They also include a page builder and a pretty clear system for managing menus, colors, footer, etc.

You might as well, if you don't mind risking everything over a compromised theme, just to save a few dollars. Smart! lol

"Extra" by ElegantThemes is a great-looking, versatile, magazine-styled theme which we've used to help clients successfully set up and run profitable blogs, including this one: Provenance Magazine

Check out the theme here: https://www.elegantthemes.com/gallery/extra/

Highly customizable, regularly updated and in keeping with current design trends. Thumbs up from us. From memory, by purchasing Extra you also get like 60 other themes. Nice!

I'd start with one of the free Wordpress default themes.

Spend some time tweaking the color scheme and adding your own images to customize it a bit, then get to work.

The notion that you need to start with a premium theme is crazy.

Buying a theme isn't a guarantee that you don't have security holes, support issues or malicious code. But using a free theme does guarantee that no one makes an affiliate commission for recommending their favorite.

Besides, once your blog has some legs, you can update the theme based on experience and user feedback rather than relying on the recommendations of total strangers based on sparse information, some of whom have dubious motivation.

Not if you buy it from the Grace L. Ferguson Airline, Storm Door and Wordpress Theme Company. That said, there are many places where you can by themes and be quite certain these threats are not an issue, at all.
