i got bored so i tried this...now what?

i go back and forth with internet marketing. it is def interesting to me but i know im not good at it. im like the kid who loves basketball but will miss a layup 90% of the time lol..

in any event, i own some real estate and i always look for workers to fix roofs and pipes/ move trash and do demo/ paint and hang sheetrock etc. im in philadelphia and there are alot of people! last week i posted an ad looking for help with cleaning a vacant house. within one hour i had 55 responses. i deleted my ad because i had enough bids to find a contractor... but i started thinking about angles. just play with me here a bit...

if i actually paid a small intern in my company to post several gigs a day in several cities, i would probably receive hundreds or thousands of responses.
if i further paid an intern to banter with contractors, i feel a pitch/link would at least get read and maybe clicked. maybe directed to my capture page? not sure if anybody knows ways to build and monitize a list of handymen/contractors? affiliate programs out there in that niche?

i know it would take time. i know its a full time job. i know its an investment. but i also know there is a return, hopefully, to be made in a list. just not sure how to monitize a list, if a list was to be built...

The challenge I see with this is it sounds like you are using a classifieds site like Craigslist and almost everyone (if not everyone) will not accept traffic or leads from this

i understand, however, if the response comes to my personal email and i reply with quality content and a link to my own site AND they follow the link to my site and from their the enter their own email....that would be capture 1.

i was just amazed at the response. maybe it the the gig in the city, meaning it might not work well with window cleaners in green bay but it worked so well....just law of numbers says i would be able to harvest some emails. i think...

Just because you build a list, doesn't mean its worth anything.

How you get those people on your list is important.

You're talking about bait and switch. You would be offering those people a job and in reality you are getting them to sign up to some mailing list where you sell them stuff.

That list will be of such low value that you might actually piss them off enough to get your mailing account closed for spam complaints.

Email marketing only works when you provide value to your list and those people trust you enough to buy from you.

Nobody is going to trust you with this approach.

On top of that, you're wasting time trying to get someone who is looking for something specific and you're trying to divert them into doing what you want them to do.

Unless you or your intern is a master marketer, you are wasting your time.

You're better off getting your intern to setup a lead capture funnel, paying for traffic that is primed and ready to receive your help and building your list with people who want your help / services / products.

    Swim down stream, not upstream.

You would be better off starting something in regards to real estate investing since that is what you know about.

You could start a YouTube channel and provide tips, show renovations, how to get good tenants etc.

I am sure there is a pretty big market there and you could start generating a nice little income. In your videos you could direct people to a lead capture page offering a free 7 part course.

This could lead to coming up with a product.

Even a fairly simple Report or E-book showing how to buy low and sell high with Flipping might have some results if you exhibit Proof of your Methods

The business opportunity that I see here is an arbitrage style business.

You could advertise clean out services for other landlords and accept jobs and then you could contract those jobs out to others at a lower price and keep the difference as your profit.

I had a little business like this a few years back.

After I had gotten laid off in 2008, I put an ad on Craigslist for junk removal/clean outs for rental houses and apartments. I discovered that there was a lot of people who defaulted on their leases or rents and were going though the eviction process and many times these people would just take off suddenly and leave the apartment a mess. Often they would leave a lot of furniture and personal items behind. In some cases, the landlord would change the locks and keep their stuff as payment.

This left open job opportunities because the landlord would obviously need their units cleaned out before they could rent them again.

I started getting quite a few calls from landlords and property owners who were looking for people to come and remove the junk from the units. I would do just general junk and rubbish removal. I did not offer any kind of maid service or anything like that. This was just removing the rubbish and heavy stuff. However, if you wanted to, you could include those type of services and just hire out a maid service. You could also simply approach a maid service and work out a commission style payment. For instance, you refer the landlord to the maid service and the maid service can then pay you a referral fee.

I would go and look at the job and give the landlord an estimate. If he/she accepted, I would hire another person at an hourly rate to help me and I would go and do the job.

What was cool about this job was that on top of the fee I charged the landlord, most times there would be decent furniture and sometimes even appliances left behind that I would remove and then turn around and sell it on Craigslist or Backpage. I would not ask a lot of money for the stuff because it was above and beyond anyway. For instance, I would sell sofas or recliners for like $25 or a good stove or refrigerator for $50. The landlord may have locked the tenants out and kept their stuff for payment, but most times the landlords just wanted them out and really didn't want anything to do with the stuff that was left behind.

There were a lot of other small benefits, too, especially if the tenants had left personal stuff behind. A lot of times the landlord would not want the stuff, and many times it was decent stuff. I would get anything from CD & DVD collections to computer towers to end tables to microwave ovens to designer jeans. This was all extra.

Believe it or not, I made pretty good money doing this, and many times the jobs only took 3-4 hours.

I had started doing well with my online business, and so I just let that fall by the wayside, but it's nice to know that I could go back to doing that or even run it as a side business if I have the time.

I bet I could even do it without doing any of the work myself. I could hire a couple of day workers for $9-$10 and hour to do the job and just put the profit in my pocket. All I would need to do is drive them to and from the job.

As far as turning this into an online venture with list building, I don't really see a demand there. You'd be better off to try and turn it into an actual "physical" business.

      +1 this idea generally

But in terms of the OP's list building question, unrelated idea.

Re the OP's question - I live in a very expensive area of the country. About half the craigslist ads for apartments or homes that look decent are actually scams. They're terribly done - bad grammar, immediate attempts to operate outside of CL, etc. You wouldn't know from the original post, because they copy original posts. But once you email them, it gets wacky fast.

I'm sure a bunch of people fall for them anyway - some seem reasonable, at first.

I've always wondered how much money I could make promoting something like a guide to not getting scammed by posting reasonable looking ads and then pointing out what the buyer should have noticed was wrong, and promoting my ebook.

Alternatively - Apologizing that the unit was no longer available, but offering a friend's services as a realtor and taking a commission (don't have such a friend, but could probably make one).

The problem I have with both these ideas is they're scammy.

That's the only real problem I have with yours. Otherwise, done well, it would probably work a little bit.

This is your first and probably your biggest problem. Either commit to something 100% or dont do it at all.

There are 2 kinds of kids that love basketball but cant shoot a layup. The one who takes a few shots and then goes home to play video games after getting frustrated, and the one who is at the court every day, rain or shine drilling shots until he finally gets it perfect.

Guess which one ends up going to the state finals 2 years later?

It seems like you are trying to lure contractors and other people who are looking for work into a lead capture page so you can email them stuff to buy.

The thing is they are looking to get work not buy stuff.

Maybe a better approach would be to figure out how to sell stuff to people who want to buy it?

Then learn how to put yourself 'in front' of them Online.

Well if these contractors that you're attracting are looking to get work, then perhaps you can get them on your list or lure them with content that will help them do just that: Land more work! It's worth a test imo. After all, nobody is forcing them to optin into the list. If the content attracts them, they'll optin. If not, they won't.
