Aweber - Lots of confirmation pendings

About 55% of the people on my email list have the "Confirmation Pending" status. I've read the average for double opt-in is about 30-40% so I seem high. Once they subscribe, they are directed to a page that says "Check your spam folder". I've customized my welcome title to say "MY SITE NAME - Please confirm you subscription". I had my girlfriend test out my email opt-in and the confirmation email went straight to spam.

I'm reluctant to go to single opt-in because I want to know that my subscribers want to be there and are real but this seems a little ridiculous. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jeff

Where did the list come from? That's probably the crux of your problem.

I guess what they say is true. There's a first time for everything.

Do you have SPF set up?

Anyone that mails should set up seeds and use them to test your message for inbox placement.

Ideally, you want to know what your list domain make up is and try and build seeds based on the domains with the largest percentage of users. If you are too lazy or don't have a list yet then I recommend the following.

At the very least you could set up seed accounts for aol, yahoo, gmail, hotmail/outlook, as they can account for as much as 85%-90% of a list (including parent domains using the same mx server). Then acquire any other seed accounts that you can get. If you want to take it a step further, you could set up an account using spamassassin with pyzor / razor add-ons to test GI.

If your messages are going to the spam folder, you need to test and isolate what is causing it and fix.Which will l likely be caused by something within the following...

    1) Back-end Set Up: spf, dkim, rdns, etc...
    * If you are using an ESP then really you just want to make sure you have SPF set up.
    2) IP / Domain Reputation: any ip / domain associated with the mailing.
    3) Content: Everything in the message body / subject line and even the template.

As to running double opt-in. There is no reason why you can't send your own confirmation email and then move those that click (confirm) to a separate campaign for those that confirmed.

With many ESPs having automation features, you can move a user based on clicking a link. If you can't you could create a custom script that collects the email and moves the user.

Technically, you don't even have to send a confirmation email. You could send a message with a link that should be clicked on. Link for your bribe.

You could also confirm based on opening instead of click. If you want to be more lenient.

Lastly, if you are proving a bribe, tell the user on your squeeze page that it will be sent to the email they enter. So they know entering in a fake email isn't going to work.

By doing the above, you can build a list of both and test and see if you are leaving money on the table using double opt-in.

Also, if someone doesn't confirm using whatever method you choose, you can resend the message.

ChrisBa, I am getting people to join my list almost exclusively through facebook ads.

Thank you DIABL0 for your detailed answer.
I have set up the SPF record for Aweber.
I know the content is safe.
What do you mean about IP/Domain reputation? My site is only a couple of months old so does this hurt me?

The domain could have been previously owned and abused.

Also, the IP address your domain is hosted on might have bad neighbors that have triggered the whole IP address to get placed on black lists.

What are you using for a "return" address? If you use something like Gmail, that is a problem.

Use an email associated with your domain like info@yourdomain.com.

My return address is from my website, not gmail or anything like that.

Is there any way I could find out if the domain was previously owned and abused or if the IP address my domain is hosted on has been blacklisted?

You could see if you can find it in the Wayback Machine.

As for the blacklisted thing, just Google around for some of the blacklisted and spam collection sites out there and check if you see it.
