Internet Marketing and the "Bush" Babies..

Forgive me... I think too much. It's why I'm graying at an early age. But, I was thinking about the future of internet marketing in the context of demographics; more specifically, age and I had a minor freak out moment.

I say that because I see this whole thing turning on it's head as the "old ways" will fall by the wayside. If my family members are any indication the next wave of consumers (who are now what I call "Bush Babies") will embody the following characteristics.
  1. These kids are great communicators through the internet. They can convey an entire story in 130 characters and 2 emojis
  2. They are less motivated to hustle. Hustle connotes "greed" and "greed" for the sake of greed is "bad."
  3. They have poor human to human interaction skills.
  4. They have "ADD" - meaning they need answers, and demand answers faster. There's so much information to be accessed so quickly via the internet, it's all they know. Researching stuff in libraries will be for dinosaurs in 10 years...

Anyway, these same kids will be the average age of your present day average consumer some day. So it's hard for me to see how today's playbook will apply.

I think that over time...
  1. Long form sales letters will become dinosaurs (to an extent they already are).
  2. E-mail marketing will take a big hit. Open rates down, subscribe rates down as more kids used Facebook than they did e-mail in 2013. Your Twitter followers will become your new e-mail subscribers...
  3. The "fast and easy" success market will soar. That market, along with "do what make you feels good for money" market will thrive as well. Speaking of money, these kids have no problem blowing it. $1,000 shoes, $300 belts, etc.
  4. Most importantly, the way we deliver products will inherently change. Video is rapidly becoming the preferred method of product consumption but I see services like Codementor.io for "do what you love and make money" exploding at a point. Looking at their spending habits, I don't see it being too difficult to charge a millennial by the minute for you to tell them how amazing they are. Additionally, I've seen it with some launches I did last year... When these kids are able to access the creator of the product directly it enhances the relative value of the product in their eyes and the good news is you can charge more (a lot more) but, I've had to remind folks; "it's in the guide." "Did you read the guide?" etc.

Anyway, I am curious to get you guys' perspectives on this. As internet marketers the goal is to be able to clearly communicate the value of your offering and then deliver a great offering. The thought of having to sit on Twitter all day responding to kids (who will be adults) who have answers on this and that is kinda scary.

BTW a "Bush Baby" is a kid who was born during the Bush Years - 2001 - 2009
