How much do blogs earn? Lots of Data

Over the past 3 weeks, I've analyzed the data from over 100 blogs and online businesses that recently sold.

I chose blogs that sold because the data has been checked and verified and should be accurate.

I focused on sites monetized with: Adsense, Amazon associate links, affiliate links, Amazon FBA and E-commerce

From the data I've detailed following:

Average RPM ( Net profit/pageviews X1000)

Median RPM (top 20% and bottom 20% removed)

BECPC - Break Even Cost per Click

Niche (where possible)

Date Established

How much it sold for.

The result of this data is that I have a good idea how much different types of sites in certain niches make.

For example, an amazon associates site that deals in household apliances should have an RPM of around $220 as there are several sites in that niche earning that amount.

Here are the resulting Data for RPMs

The average RPM is:

Adsense $13.09

Amazon $124.04

Affiliate $357.54

Amazon FBA $616.88

E-commerce $625.61

The Median RPM is:

Adsense $9.97

Amazon $104.42

Affiliate $155.14

Amazon FBA $587.43

E-commerce $223.02 (this is much lower from the average because the top site was earning an RPM of over $7000)
Amazon and affiliate incomes when used as a secondary source of income.

Personal Thoughts

For me, Amazon FBA looks to be the strongest business model that I looked at.

If you want to build a site to sell then aim to sell when a site is around 18 month old.

18 month old sites look strong especially if monetized with Amazon Associate links The average sale price was just below Amazon FBA sale prices. $212K Vs $228

Finally, I am not a statistician I analyze this type of data to help me get a handle on whats working. Hence the Break even figure I included, if I can find a niche where I can get traffic at half the RPM Ill be a happy geek!

  • Nice research although the main issue here is that the sites will be in all kinds of niches that have widely different RPM's.

For what it's worth I made about 30 - 50% more when I swapped AdSense for direct linking CPA offers on my blog.

    • That's why I included niches in the data, for example I can see 3 sites that target household items via amazon all have RPM's around $200.

I can see surgery targeted adsesne sites are the best earners etc
