Are you a master in networking? Please help.

Hello,

One of the key habits employed by many of wealthy (or very wealthy) IMers is networking. In other words, these guys and gals tend to go to every event where the "cool kids" gather.

This includes trade conferences, affiliate marketing seminars, copywriting workshops, mastermind retreats and so on.

This is a strategy that I want to employ too. However, this is virgin territory for me so I'd love some insight from the people who are doing this on a regular basis. To be more specific, insight from those who are master networkers and connecting with like minded people, be it associates, partners and mentors is at the top of their priority list.

Here are a few specific questions that I have:

1. How do you find these events? Meet-up? Email newsletters?
2. Do you go at these events with a goal in mind (like connect with ten marketers) or you just enjoy yourself and see who you can connect with?
3. Do you buy plane tickets / hotel rooms / event tickets long time in advance, saving money or do you buy them in the last moment, to be sure that you can attend?
4. If you are NOT from the US and you attend US events (as that's where most are found), how easy is to get the business visa? Or do you use a tourist visa?
5. If you were to quantify the ritual / habit of connecting with key people, how much does it account for your success?

Anything you may add is welcomed.

This is not for a WSO. I'm not writing anything. I'm just at that point in my life where I'm slowly exiting my comfort zone. I have friends that fly to places like Hong Kong and Thailand to meet with other professionals and marketers and I'm not. The reasons are not so much logistical as this being outside of my comfort zone.

So I hope that by knowing more - I can feel better prepared to start networking in a real and strategic way.

Thank you!
Razvan

In my opinion, starting anything requires starting at the beginning. Recognizing that you are a beginner is part of that mindset. Gaining beginner skills in networking does not require international travel. You can start by visiting local organizations and practice getting yourself invited to events. For example, you can get yourself invited to a Rotary luncheon presentation and practice networking before and after the event. Go to the first place with the intent of getting invited to some event where you can practice. Then go to that event with the bigger goal of getting invited to two events. Both might be appointments to sit down over coffee with the people volunteering to sign people in to the event. That might give you the confidence to relax during the rest of the event and learn more ways to network. Pick something small. In the doing of that small thing, gain skill and confidence. If international conferences are part of your future, get there by facing in the right direction and then taking the first small steps.

What do your FRIENDS say? You, who don't think very highly of the WF, and are just waiting for a reason to leave here forever, are asking the very people you want to avoid? Maybe, guys like YOU, are what is making the WF the pit it has become? eh?
