Where to start with affiliate marketing for a complete newbie

Hi guys so I've read threads and some ebooks and spoke to a few people who have helped me gain "some" knowledge.

Of course there are a lot of people who are willing to mentor at a cost.

However I want to see if that's the best route or if you guys can point me into the right direction.

I'm more of a hands on kind of guy so once I get my hands on it and do it once I should get a grasp on things

Any suggestions?

Thanks

    Hi there,

That's actually great if you are willing to be hands-on and learn things mostly yourself! Though it's usually better to have a coach especially if you're a newbie, why not try doing it yourself first?

Affiliate marketing starts and ends with finding the right niche to market in. It's pretty simple, really. You find a hotbed of buying activity and you plant yourself firmly there to market as many hot products as possible to a very active online market of potential customers. Such as weight loss, dating, dog training and self help niches.

I hope that`s helping you understand the basic idea of how affiliate marketing goes?
    Thanks,
    -Omar

I've never used slack before but that looks interesting.
This forum is still pretty good for any general questions you have. Ask away

If you are a newbie with low budget to start, here's some steps to follow:

Pick your niche and some keywords
Pick a marketplace, products to promote and get the affiliate links
Create web 2.0, doc share, social pages and youtube for your products to get traffic
Find forums related with your niche to brand your online profile

Sell some gigs related with your niche on fiverr to get daily income to pay your internet cost and buy more tools.

If you get some sales start to create blog with self-host and TLD domain
Build your list for automated commissions.

That's should be good to go to start your affiliate marketing journey.

Maybe you can learn something from my story.

I invested $30.00 on an eBook which was titled, "How to write and Sell and eBook in 30 Days". I bought the book and without thinking too much about what niche to dive into, I started writing.

I actually got the book written in about 2 weeks and churned out about 75 pages of material. I thought someone...anyone would want to read it and that I'd make some money on it.

I knew enough to figure that I would probably not make a huge sum of money from writing the book, but I was eager to set it up and get the ball rolling.

In the early 1990's credit card processing was kind of expensive.
You had to get an online credit card service if you wanted to sell something, even an eBook. PayPal had just started to really roll, but it did not have half of the cheap merchant services it has today.

I finally found a very inexpensive solution from a company called 2Checkout. 2Checkout is a company that would let you set up any product that you wanted to sell, and it would act as a credit card processor for a percentage of the sale. (Currently, they will charge you 2.5% for processing.)

They would let you set up your products, give you the code to drop into your page and then process your order for you. With very few glitches, it worked like a charm.

How I Faced Failure and Turned It Around...

However, nobody wanted to read my book on Internet marketing, especially since I was a Newb.

I felt like a total Derp.

So my first effort resulted in selling nothing.

But, hey, you'll learn your best and biggest lessons from failure. Determined to still make money from Internet marketing thing, I decided to try again. This time I wanted to find a niche that was narrow and that a group of people felt passionate about.

At the time I was trying my hand at this, I was a band director at a military academy and I was working with a bagpiping team.

The kids that I was working with at the time, were really into the whole Celtic/Bagpiping hobby, and I had a hard time keeping up with them because I had no education in the realm of bag pipes.

One Friday, when I was getting ready to go home from work, I noticed one of the bag piping team members getting into a car with his Celtic gear on. (Yep, the team wore kilts.)

When I asked him why he was wearing his outfit, he told me something I had no knowledge of. He was making all sorts of money playing bagpipes for different events. Weddings, funerals, retirement parties, police events, etc.

And the money he was making was pretty good. He'd make $200.00 at any given event, and he was only required to play for small segments of the events.

So, that was the seed of an idea for my second eBook, "How to Make Money With Your Bagpipes" and even though it didn't make me rich, I still made thousands from it.,

Heck, it was pretty easy to market, when I look back on it. Since I was a band director at a military academy, it was very easy to network with bagpipers and find out where they all hung out at online.

I also knew who the best bagpipe teachers were and I could easily contact them and get them to spread the word for me.

I guess that's why identifying a focused niche is very important.

So, that was the first time I made money online and I've been hooked ever since.

That's how I started. My best advice is to never quit and never give up. Always learn something new.

I'll tell you a real good book to get is by Gene Simmons of Kiss fame. It's called, "Me, Inc.: Build an Army of One, Unleash Your Inner Rock God, Win in Life and Business"

This book has been an enormous help and it is highly inspirational. Get a copy and read it several times.

    To Your Success!

There may be something to the focused niche thing. My GF has an etsy shop selling planner stickers and a business called teachers pay teachers where she sells "printables." Could I easily explain either niche? Not easily. The best I can say is I hear the cha ching every night and frequently when we are out. Finding something you are passionate about probably goes along way too. When it does get hard to do the affiliate marketing thing, it may be easier if you have a passion about the subject.
To me best steps would be set up a website with squeeze page, have them optin to your list. Give them high quality emails with soft sales. Maybe recommend products to your list, free stuff with an upgrade options, or limited free trials. Eventually you can try and sell stuff with higher price points.

I'm thinking of getting a mentor. I need a step by step tutorial of how this thing works. I mean yes i can pick a niche. write about it. Pay for traffic? and what not. But I'm sure affiliate marketing consists of much more than that, or am I overthinking it too much.

I already made a mistake.. I wanted to create a website become an amazon affiliate. But like someone said to me why would someone go on your website yet alone use those links to buy product from you .... Who are you? a Nobody...

Well said... I thought But that made me want to get into affiliate marketing even more

Do you have niche picked out that you want to get into?

If not, what are you interested in?

Once you do this, this then you can make a choice, do you want to do a niche site or blog?

For example, if you are into fitness and health, you can either create a blog about this topic.

Or you can consider breaking this niche down into a sub niche where you talk about how to increase your fitness by walking.

Once you have made this choice--start creating good content and getting active on social media along with forums in your niche.

Once you have some good content on your niche site or blog, you can direct people back to your site--either on social media or through your sig on the forums.

Do not sell, just be helpful--give good information.

Of course, on your blog or niche site you will want to include links to products that you are promoting.

You can do other things for free traffic like getting into guest posting, blog commenting and even sending out a press release about your site.

Whatever you decide to do, do this, do not give up!

    Keep at it.

    Hope this helps.

I can recommend Charles Ngo's blog, google it. He shares a bit of insights into affiliate marketing and you will find an outline of how he does it.

But that's just one way to do it, remember that.

Some affiliates create websites, content, reviews.
Others collect emails and market to their list
Some are really good at direct linking

Some use social media, others do media buy, some do native ads, some buy solo ads ...

there's almost as many ways to do it as there are affiliate marketers out there

    Hi:

Most people new to internet marketing start with CickBank or JVZoo or even warrior forum.
    1. Pick a niche that you may be interested in like people have said before in this thread.
    2. Pick a product that converts well and pays well.
    3. Just starting off you would be better buying traffic (SOLO Ads) unless you have a large FaceBook Fan page or large email list.
    4. Create an opt-in page and offer some kind of free gift.
    5. One free source of leads is YOUTUBE..
    6. Get yourself a good auto-responder and start emailing your list as soon as they opt-in

    Good luck,

There is no easy answer to this.

You need to learn to observe. Watch what
successful people do and copy them.

Read, read, read and then read some more.

Internet marketing is simple. The formula
for making money online is traffic plus
    conversion.

So start by learning how to build websites.

Then learn how to get traffic to that site.

You do this with first, SEO then paid traffic
(i.e. advertising) then learn how to send
that traffic to an offer. A certain amount
of those visitors will convert and you'll
    make money. Once you've mastered
that create your own offer and make
    even more money.
