Where are the money these days?

I have been following the internet marketing business from the sideline since the mid 90s. Back then you could make a ton of money selling anything online since the competition was non-existing. Then on to the start 00s where all you needed was a basic knowledge of SEO and grey-hat tactics to get any page on the top pages of Google and monetize that traffic. From the mid 00s it seems that blogging and building lists has been where a lot of money has been made. From the end 00s you could earn good money just buying stuff cheaply overseas and selling it online or on ebay with Google Adwords ads. Also at this time a whole new world of apps appeared out of nowhere - a ton of money was made on the app stores during the first years. Then from the start 10s it seems that the big craze is around social media. Having a website seems not to be enough anymore - you need to establish an online presence and tell a compelling story across platforms to build a business online.

My point of this timeline is that competition is ever-increasing and so is complexity. However, at any given time, easy money has existed on the internet if you looked to the right direction.

My question to you guys is: where is the money to be made these days?

I read a lot about blogging, building a following and monetizing that. However, that has been the word for a decade now and it just seems to be an extremely crowded space.

I am somewhat a newbie in this field, although not a newbie in business - I have a good income and a long career in both programming and management. I just feel disconnected from the business world altogether and dream about total independence from bosses and offices.

All he needs is a new map. And, I just happen to have one. But, can't share it publicly, may for 19.95 plus shipping and handling though. It is updated daily because the money moving team changes every 24 hours. Today it is in Atlanta.

And selling maps to new miners (along with tools) has been an evergreen market since he started watching the Internet money movers.

I'll explain it to him in a separate post.

Al, you probably mean the money is in building audience, providing value and monetizing it. I agree on that part.
But that's on a strategic level, and what I'm referring to in my post is the tactical level. You must decide on tactics regarding technology, platforms, media and I can't figure out if the old tactics still work.

Do you think there's still money in creating a blog, writing quality content, signing them up for a mailing list and monetizing that?

eCommerce today seems to me a lot more complex and involving a new type of cross-media communication. Basically the audience has gone from Google to a wide array of platforms including search, social media, app stores, review sites etc.

Actually what I mean is. The money you and everyone else wants is in other peoples possession and you need to figure out how to have them transfer it to your possession.

One person said "The money is in your fun" That is ridiculous. People will not part with their money so you can have fun, they will part with their money so they can have fun.

What do you love, what is your passion? Me,Me, I, I. This is the problem with many Internet marketers and Internet marketing advice givers. Find out what other peoples wants needs and desires are, then provide it to them

Precisely. You own passion for anything is almost meaningless. What matter is the other person's passion for something that you can sell them.

I agree. for example, I happen to have a passion for Havanese puppies, but if I decide to launch a dog site it will probably feature more popular breeds such as Labradors and Border Collies as the Havanese breed is not a big enough niche.

It is simple, really. Find a hangout of people who believe there is always easy money to be made, say a place, um, like the warrior forum. Look for ones who share your dream of independence.

Then, Claim you have discovered the laterst and greatest NEW THING, NEW way of making easy money. Maybe use a WF WSO.

Since you have observed this for two decades now, watching where the money is going and all, you are in the right place at the right time.

There exists a no larger congregation of people in the world looking for the IM easy money, here they are, right here at WF, very low hanging fruit ripe for the picking.

Gordon, I get your point, and I actually think you're quite right. To me it seems the real money outside of selling IM products always required a technical insight or skill that has been way beyond the average person. For example:
      * Mining Bitcoin in the early days required you to be somewhat a cryptography expert and internet pioneer
      * Selling stuff online in the lates 90s or early 00s required technical skills about HTML, credit card gateways and web design.
      * Developing apps in the late 00s required expertise in programming, design and UI/UX
All of these examples (and there are a lot more) have the fact in common that there are almost no money left in these market for the average person.
Maybe I'll stick to my 9-5 job in investment banking.. or create my own IM product as you suggest Gordon

Today, try podcasting market, big and growing, just look at the questions here about it. Put together a few podcast kits, including mics, mixers etc. I live near Audio Technica HQ and stockup at their annual sale.

Yes, the tech plays a role, but most money making ideas....may offer one a chance of outsourcing that but the bottom line for all money making opportunities including the subjective EASY money is:

An exchange of value between people. With your tech background I guarantee you have a few "information" products in your head, and the same system for selling that info hasn't changed in 20 years.

You have to have it ready in a consumable form
Let the target market know it
Take their money and deliver what they want.

Sure, an oversimplification, but it is and always has been a pretty easy route to quick cash....Joe Karbo used in the 70's, and Tai Lopez is getting rich today with a similar system.
And plenty of affiliate products to offer too.

PROSPECT, PRODUCT, PROMOTION, MEDIA has worked for decades and still works today.

I started in the late 90's and I'm still doing the same thing as I did back then.

I promote PPL (pay per lead...lead generation) offers. The key reason is that there is no credit card / purchase required to complete an offer. All a user has to do is fill out a form, so conversion rates are typically much higher than offers that require a sale.

Bottom line and especially in theses times, it's just far easier to get someone to fill out a short form than to take out their credit card and make a purchase. So why struggle with trying to sell them this or that, when you could just provide free information to users that they actually want/need and get paid well doing it. I was just lucky that this is how I started my internet marketing career and there was never any reason for me to change it.

The first few years I actually developed my own offers and sold the leads directly to end buyers. Then once CPA networks started to pop up, it was much easier to just get the offers to promote from them. Which is mainly what I have been doing for the past 16+ years now.

I favor offers that have a make, get or save money benefit to them, as they have overall worked the best for me and tend to have the greatest mass appeal (will be of interest to a large general audience). So the potential to generate high volume exists and cross promoting offers is fairly easy.

Some verticals I have done extremely well with are education, insurance, debt, mortgage, discount offers, assistance, credit, loans, homeowner offers. etc...

To generate traffic I acquire fresh / targeted 3rd party data (email). Which is data that the user have provided permission to receive messages from third parties. Which is 100% can-spam compliant and has absolutely nothing to do with spamming.

Which then based on the user's interest, I match it with a relevant offer. So if they are requesting info about life insurance, I send a life insurance offer. If they are interested in furthering their education, then I send an education offer, etc, etc...

Basically, I'm monetizing the data by sending PPL offers, as they offer the path of least resistance to generating conversions / $$$ and converting the data into cash producing assets.

Obviously, there is so much more that goes into everything. But it really does work and can be extremely profitable done right. Everyone that I know that is in the business and knows what they are doing, for the most part, does 6-7 figures. While that is a huge range, much comes down to one's ability to scale and effectively manage / build the infrastructure needed to scale.

While it's not for everyone, it's something to think about.

at any given time, easy money has existed on the internet if you looked to the right direction.
What you mean is "from the sidelines, it looks like easy money has existed"....because it doesn't sound as if you took advantage of any of those "easy methods" you noticed. Had you tried those methods over the years you might have found it's not as easy as it "looked" ...or... you might have done very well had you jumped in to be part of any one of those 'methods'.

Back then you could make a ton of money selling anything online since the competition was non-existing.
Except - there weren't nearly as many people online....no Paypal to process payments....people didn't trust buying online. Every period had its challenges and the "easy money" has been a rumor passed down for years.

People that stay on the sidelines are 'spectators' - and that's a job that doesn't pay.

    Hi Simon,

The money is in your fun Or, what you have most fun doing.

For me that means blogging about blogging tips and working in my travel stories.

I monetize through selling my 126 eBooks, selling my 4 online courses, my audio books, paperbacks, offering coaching and freelance writing services, sponsored posts, affiliate marketing and various other income streams. Because I have fun working these channels.

But the love I feel creating stuff for others is the prime monetizing factor, because this fun/love detaches me some from money outcomes, which allows me to prosper.

    Not to sound silly,

But the money is where it has always been, in whatever niche you can enter, drive traffic in, build a list in or simply convert that traffic into sales.

I know I sure made this mistake when I first started out, always looking for the easy money.

When what I should have been doing was establishing myself as a an authority in my niche--instead of chasing the easy money.

    Which I never got anyway.

There is good money in almost every niche today - but it is only given to those with businesses that go after it and provide something in the niche of value to their prospects.

People who sit on the sideline and watch the parade as it goes by don't get any of it.

Simon, you are not in need of an "easy money niche." You are in need of the motivation and work it takes to set up a business online and present some offers that will help prospects in whatever niche you choose.

The game of online income is really simple . . . you put yourself in the game and become a player rather than a fan watching from the sidelines.

Nothing worth having comes EASY. With that said, you can still make a great income by putting in 2-3 hours of work on a daily basis. There has and always will be money in list building, so long as you're getting quality traffic and high opt-in rates. Quality paid traffic would do just that

Also, the real money is in providing VALUE to other entrepreneurs like yourself. By providing insight and true value, you can be viewed as an expert which will in return significantly boost your income if managed properly. What do most people get online for? INFORMATION.

No, you need to offer something for sale that people actually want or need to buy.

The whole "be a guru to a tribe" is mostly just marketing hype in the MMO space. Many thousands of people earn fairly anonymous incomes online without telling any stories.

You're right mate. You used to be able to drive traffic from paid ads and make a killing.
The problem is now the price of acquiring a customer is more than the product!

It just doesn't work anymore.. Unless. You have a lot of high converting products and a multitude of various high-ticket services/products for sale.

If you have this and earn 90% commission on products, and once a front end product has been purchased that customer is taken off your hands for a team of professionals to call and upsell, whilst still always making 90% for that customer on every sale in the future.

Then... it's a profitable business model

Do you all believe it has never been easier to spend money? I think mainly because of tech efficiencies and crypto-currency. But I'm fairly young so I don't know if credit was easier to obtain in the past. It seems like the gaming app industry has hit a jackpot. Fantasy sports apps as well.

Kids sit on their ipads all day loaded with their parents' credit card... The company Supercell who made the game app Clash Royale was reportedly raking in over 100m a month through in-app purchases. Now obviously they're a major company with staff and infrastructure in place but it's crazy to think that they offer no physical product, well besides software, and make that much.
