Should I go with Paypal Standard or Express Checkouts?

Is there a "secret" to getting it right and NOT having paypal become a nightmare? Trying to figure out whethere there is any sort of difference....I'm not selling anything that is against their TOS, but that's never stopped paypal issues before....I'm actually going to be setting up and managing the account for my business partner, as I am the company director. I just want this to go seemlessly... any paypal "secrets" or "tricks" from long time successful vendors?

Express checkout is supposedly the best way to go, but PayPal standard is actually fully customizable as well, however it is much less documented on.
We use standard, it was just because that is how we started out and have gotten pretty good at working with it. We do tasks with it that PayPal themselves say are impossible, it does do everything, but again, less people know how to work with it, PayPal's documentation on Standard for difficult tasks are mostly out of date, and do not work. The developers at PayPal you generally talk to do not really know how to do complicated tasks with standard, however I would assume they know what they are doing with Express.
If I was to start all over again, I probably would have done the Express Checkout.
If you are thinking about using PayPal's button factory, beware, twice we had them make all our buttons nonfunctional.

@PBScott thank you for that very detailed and thorough answer that was incredibly helpful and I really appreciate you sharing your experience

@agmccall thank you for your reply I was considering the pro alternative but I've also read a lot of horror stories online about people applying for the Pro then suddenly getting everything Frozen then again I've heard that same story with every version of PayPal and every PayPal products including the debit card and the credit and the 180 days to pay program etcetera etcetera I just don't like the idea of handing over money to them without a guarantee that they won't shut off my account or arbitrarily decide to hold on to my funds for an indefinite period of time without any real justification given and no breach of their terms it's bad enough that they can pull that kind of stuff without working over money to them first and I find it hard to believe that paying $30 versus not paying $30 is what distinguishes credible and not likely to get shut down versus not credible pirate and likely to get shut down if ...$30 is really "the bar" that's actually sort of frightening...

I've also read a lot of horror stories online about people
Paypal has (from what I've read) about 100 MILLION accts - and those of us who have good experiences don't write stories about paypal. Something to consider.

I'm not saying paypal never makes a mistake - but in my opinion the great majority of "frozen accts" are a direct result of a person not reading the TOS or lying about location or age, etc. Surprising how many end up with negative balances on Paypal because they can't cover their own refunds.

You can read horror stories all day about paypal and google adsense and every other service people use online...but they stay in business because the great majority of users are happy with the service.

Don't read horror stories - read the TOS and stick to it.

We had a few horror stories with them in the first couple of years, but now that they are used to us, and us them, I can't think of a problem in at least four years... we have hundreds of thousands of transactions with them in those four years... not one problem. Oh wait yeah had one problem last December, they refunded a customer who lied about not receiving a package which Australia post had a signature for, but we ended up sorting that one out later ourselves.... very few problems anyhow.

Get a business account when you can.
