Apparently, I am Poor and In Need of Assistance...

So, school started not long ago...

My 8 year old is in the 3rd grade and apparently when they
start school there is a lot of interaction. You know, where do you
live? What's your name? What do your parents do? kind of questions
asked by the teacher.

No doubt when the teacher asked "what do your parents do"? My 8
year old answered NOTHING lol....

So, he starts bringing home these forms for things like catholic charities,
fuel assistance programs, etc... Also, he kept bringing his lunch money
home saying he got "free lunch".

Finally, I called the school this morning and asked to speak to the
principal and asked why he was getting free lunch and why he
kept bringing these papers and forms for assistance home.

The principal said I would need to speak to the guidance counselor...

So, I'm thinking to myself "what the hell is going on"?, right? lol

The counselor gets on the phone and tells me that my 8 year old
said that both of his parents were UNEMPLOYED and that because
of that he got free lunch and they were trying to assist us financially...

Needless to say, I'm going to have to sit down with my 8 year old
tonight and have a talk with him

lol - No thanks! I'm going to roll in my Durango until the wheels fall off

I hate car payments. My wife wants to get a new car, but it doesn't make
sense to me. The Durango is only 4 years old or so and still runs great, plus
we can drive it out on the beach

    hell, take the money

You've certainly paid enought taxes into the system. Get some back. It's not your fault that the school administration arbitrarily enrolled you into assistance programs without checking the facts. Therefore, you've done nothing fraudulently.

Accept their generosity with a humble smile and give the kid an allowance raise or something.

LOL, many years ago, when I was still living in Canada, my son's class was going for a weekend trip. They needed volunteer parents. My son volunteered me, as "My Dad is free. He doesn't have a job."

It was one fun weekend. I got a group of rowdy boys and we had pillow fights. Funny thing was, the school never asked me to help out again. Seems they wanted responsible adults.

When he was 8, my son frequently told his mom (my ex-wife) that all I did was play on my computer all day. He also told his teacher that I didn't have a job.

I now make the time to show him the projects I'm working on so that he has a better grasp of what I do.

My 16 year old "daughter" - Not really sure what the proper word is because she is actually my wifes sister but we have legal guardianship of her has 2 websites.

One of them is monetized and people are actually forced to complete a CPA offer prior to entering the site. Right now she makes on average $700 a month from that.

She does all the work content wise etc which generally takes her about 2 hours a week.

I think she definitely sees the "power" and she is always asking questions and asking me about different software etc...So, I'm pretty sure she is a warrior in the making

Her other site is one that is just for her personal use. Pretty much a blog under a pen name where she kind of "airs out" certain people.

If people ask my older sons what I do...the come away from the conversation thinking that I sell stuff on ebay lol

WOW - well impressed with your "daughters" results.

$700/month from one site that takes her 2 hours per week. That's almost $100/hour - not to shabby for someone of 16.

Did you teach her the strategies Jeremy?

Wow, you know it's kind of cool that your government or whoever is in charge of doling out that assistance would be so willing to give some of it to you without even checking out the facts first. Aside from the cheap, wait-forever-in-long-hospital-line affordable substandard health care system that's available to everyone who can't pay for real health care, there isn't as much of a social safety net where I'm from.

I guess I'll just have to set up my own 'Social Security' system through Adsense or Clickbank.

Well just imagine what actions the school will take if he starts feeding his 8-year-old beer ...

Like they will appreciate that it is virtual beer (rolls eyes).

On a serious note, given the (apparent) state of the economy, it's a shame that, especially in the schools, the only way you are seen to be secure financially is if you are suiting up and jumping on the subway or bus every morning to show up at a job.

This kind of shallow thinking has millions running around as unemployed 'victims' of the recession rather than creating their own way in the world.

If I thought I could stand a classroom of excited 8-year-olds, I would sign up ASAP to be first when they do show and tell, or whatever they call it when the parent goes in and talks about their 'job'.

Why not see this as an opportunity to expand their minds beyond the security of the teacher's and school administration's thinking and give them a glimpse into the possibilities of entrepreneurship?

        Just a thought.

Whilst I do kinda like the mystery factor IM has to most regular people(bemused looks on their faces when you tell them what you do), it can also lead to embarrassing/uncomfortable(although entertaining) situations like this. If someone like Jeremy is 'poor and in need of assistance', someone like me(and a lot of us IM mere mortals) must be homeless and without 2 pennies to rub together

LOL- my husband & I are both self-employed & we meet clients at Starbucks almost daily. Last year, one of the mothers in my daughters kindergarden class made up a list of all the parents- contact numbers, place of employment, etc. She listed "Starbucks" as the place of employment for my husband & I...haha! Apparently the teacher asked all the kids what their parents did for a living & my daughter said, "My daddy works at Starbucks."

Funniest thing I read all day.

Don't quite understand why there needs to be a discussion about what parents do for a living, but whatever. If so, maybe let the children who want to share do that during career week or something. Must be truly humiliating for the kids whose parents are laid off on unemployment, or having to reveal your family structure (single parent home, possibly don't know one parent, parent in jail etc.)

Hilarious. I think it's time for 'the talk', though, with the teacher. I can't imagine what or why the parent's occupations had to do with anything--and how he ended up in those programs without parental consent. So are you going to tell them "I'm am Im-er" or will you change it around a bit for believability?

And it wouldn't hurt to show the kids what you do in a very elementary way so he knows how you're paying the bills. You'll know you got it right when you get the glazed over eyes and he still tells people whatever he wants to about your J.O.B.

Yuck. Free lunch, but who wants it! In this area there was a huge kerfuffle about ketchup being recognized as a vegetable for the school lunch program.

Please tell me you went easy on him? After all, he proabaly doesn't understand the concept of working from home....and I suspect the school doesn't either.

Also, may I suggest getting him involved in Junior Achievement asap?

I personally do not have any kids so I do not know the experience that you have been through.

You must be laughing all the way when your kids told you the full story

Jeremy - this is wayyy too funny! What's sad (haha) is I can totally relate to you, I sat here laughing my *ss off but at the same time, nodding my head.

Similar thing happened to me years ago when my daughter was in her early years of school...

On one side of it when the teacher asked if her mom would be home, my daughter said, "yeah, she works ALL the time". (They thought I just played on the pc lol). Of course then it looked like I didn't spend much time with my daughter, when in fact as soon as she came home I stopped work and picked it back up after she went to bed ) (Obviously explains why at 13 1/2 now, she's actually very close to me - shocking for a teen girl LOL).

Another time, in grade one, they put the kids into a class to learn computers. (Now, picture ANY one of us who work on the net all day, being forced to sit down to a "this is a computer, this is how you start it" discussion )

      She was bored.

So the teacher asked if something was wrong, if she was having trouble with it.

She said, "No, I'm just bored, I have one at home and I know how to use it".

Teacher says, "Oh, your parents have a computer at home? Or do you play video games on your tv?" (Obviously thinking playstation).

My daughter says, "no, I have my OWN computer. My dad built it for me and my mom taught me how to use it".

Apparently the teacher was just a little shocked that we had each had our own computers in the house (actually far more lol).

The teacher questionned further, thinking she was hearing wrong, so she asked what we do... my daughter said, "my dad fixes and builds computers... my mom does something on the internet".

      "Something". LOL!

It was one fun weekend. I got a group of rowdy boys and we had pillow fights. Funny thing was, the school never asked me to help out again. Seems they wanted responsible adults.
Can totally picture this too Kevin My hubby went on field trips a few times too... until he got a little annoyed that they thought he always had the free time to go on EVERY class trip! LOL! (None were overnighters though).

Its classic to see the look on people's faces though - Jeremy, did you get a chance yet to explain it to the school?

Curious to see what they'd say.

Its even more funny when people *assume* you can't afford something, practically refuse to sell you something (because they think you can't afford it), then you walk in with something that blows them away cuz someone else WOULD sell it to you.

We had a guy (friend actually) who ran a used car lot, who refused to sell us a car when we were in need of a new one, shortly after things turned fantastic for us online. He was willing to "loan us" the money to buy the car, we could make payments to him, on a car that was a $5000 used car. (We were just starting to look). We said it wasn't necessary, but he seriously thought we were in dire straits. (Okay, we had been tight financially a year before that, but we were okay by this point).

We left without buying anything, deciding to think more about it. (I wanted a new car, not used).

A couple of weeks later, my hubby saw him driving a one or two year old pontiac grand prix. My hubby asks how much one of those was going for. Our friend's answer: "You couldn't afford it"!

I wish I had on video his expression when we pulled up and saw him about 3 weeks later in our brand new Lexus LOL!

Classic. (Then he had his son come work for me for a while till I had to fire him for not doing anything LOL).

But its funny how as this thread has said - people either think you "do nothing", or don't believe you CAN earn a living online.... funny seeing faces when you see their responses and reactions

This story made me laugh ~ and remember! When my son was 10 and started at a new school (My X was an Air Traffic Controller (ATC) in the RAAF and we were posted every 2 years) his new teacher was also new to the school and asked Matt what his Father did for a living. Matt told him that he was an ATC and the teacher thought an ATC was the bloke on the tarmac waving the paddles guiding planes into their bays! Talk about confusing a kid by trying to explain to a new teacher how ATC actually worked on his first day at a new school ....

Every time we see that Ad on TV it makes us all laugh!

It is no wonder America is regarded as God's own state - country. Though you may not need the help but it is something very good and I must say I am impress.

Africa ( OKAY Nigeria) will not be anywhere near where it is if the leaders who are super rich learn to reach out to the poor and needy.

An American have no right to be a scammer as you guys seem to have everything. I may be wrong but you don't want to be a Nigerian for so many reasons.

Very funny but at the same time it shows solidarity - and that should be appreciated.

You don't want to be in a country where people / teachers just ignore poverty (it is not the case but the teacher didn't know) or provide humilliation instead of help.

A while back my 7yr old daughter was lying on the sofa behind me as I worked, looking bored and fed up that I was hogging the computer - again.

Out of the blue she piped up "Well, I don't understand HOW the money comes out of the computer anyway!"

I must have told her at some stage I wasn't playing, I was making money. Poor little Naomi was waiting for the coins to start falling out of the computer like a slot machine!!!
