Please assist with some basic blog advice!

Hey there everyone. I was hoping to get some education and based on some other topics I've browsed here, everyone here seemed like they'd be helpful.

I'm wanting to create a blog, and I'm basically hopelessly stuck at step 1. Or, hell, step 0.1, if you will. I have no idea what blog hosting site with which to start. The initial research I turned up was strong on Bluehost, and I was just about to signup there when some more research came up with some more negative reviews, and then I came across what seemed to be the fact that on top of $5-something per month, I'd have to pay something like $12/month or so for WordPress hosting. Is that true?

I've come across some other hosting sites (HostGator, SiteGround), but all the reviews kind of run together, and it's hard to differentiate one from another. Thus, I come to your forum for some advice on where to even start.

What is the best site hosting for starting a blog?

Some facts about me to help you advise me:

1) Cost is something of an issue. I'm not struggling, but I'm not independently wealthy enough to get this off the ground without being aware of the most cost-effective options. I don't need the cheapest option on the market, but I can't splurge, either. The whole Bluehost thing with "Pay for the hosting, then pay for the blogging" thing was quite off-putting (unless I am misunderstanding that).

2) I have absolutely no web design experience. None. I am completely pre-novice in this regard. Any services that offer the most hand-holding and basic one-click options as possible are ideal. Honestly, I'd prefer a site that does everything except the actual blog writing for me.

3) My blog will tends towards pop culture and entertainment and humor writing. I'm not a parent/mommy, and I'm not someone whose going to be blogging, like, Eight Other Uses For Old Diapers or recipes or whatever. If that matters.

Okay, I'm not sure what else I might need. I am more than happy to answer any other questions that might be relevant. I'd really appreciate any advice and personal lessons hat could be offered.

Thanks!

Just look at the different hosting companies. Go through their features and see which ones appeal to you the most. this question is asked time and time and time and time and time again here at the warrior forum. if you search a little you will find this question has been asked hundreds of times.

This is one of the most basic decisions someone starting an online business has to make. As people start to post in this thread you will end up with more questions than answers. everyone has a different opinion. so like i said, do your research and make your decision based on your needs.

Not that it matters, but I use hostgator and hosting from namecheap. But, I do not endorse either one. they just work for me

Well, I mean, to be fair... that is what I've been doing. But it all sounds the same to me, really. All the intricacies seem to be in the design aspect of stuff ("C++ and PERL friendly!" or whatever) and that stuff means less than nothing to me. I've been doing a lot of research, and everything seems so complex. Is WordPress the same thing as a website? Why would I pay for each separate? What does WordPress even do, exactly, that isn't just web design? What hosting sites have the most ease of design for people who are tech-illiterate like I?

I figure this has been asked many times (and I do apologize for doing it again), and I'm just hoping some of the folks who have been through the same stuff that I am can give me the advice. Some "been in the trenches" advice, as it were.

This is what I'm talking about. Now I'm even more confused. Are those different? This is the first I've heard of domains not being a part of hosting.

What is the best site hosting for starting a blog? That really depends on the individual.

Basically you need a domain and a hosting account. Their are several free ones but they have limitations. So your best bet is a paid domain and paid hosting.

First off Blue host charges for the full year for hosting account up front. The domain is a separate purchase price for one year.

Since you are new try namecheap for hosting. To save a few dollars look for a discount coupon on the web. You can also get very cheap hosting from them also if you want. That would be a different price again. I think they offer monthly payments for the hosting. The domain would need to be purchased for the year. Go here to namecheap - https://www.namecheap.com/ ( Mods this not an affiliate link ). Buy the most basic hosting & domain nothing else !

Question number # 2 look on youtube video's on how to build a wordpress site. No matter who builds the site you will have to write the articles or provide them so they appear on you site. Any more questions please ask or use the search button and type in blog here on the forum.

Hope this helps clear some things up for you.

Thank you for the links; I'm going to check those out. At this point, I seriously think this whole thing just isn't for me. A week's worth of research, and this post is now the first time I've heard that Hosting and Domains are two separate things. At this point, someone could tell me "Well, if you want to be able to use the Shift Key in making your site, you need to purchase Shift Access through a company that offers that", and I'd be like "Yeah, that makes sense, okay".

        Hi.

I'm fairly new to the industry, but I've been learning so much in the past several months. The more I learn, the more everything just comes together.

I have BlueHost and I paid $50+ for web hosting for the year. It comes with a free domain for a year. I will worry about renewal of both in a year from now. Right now my goal is to get my website going. Oh, by the way, WordPress is a add on in BlueHost. It's free.

You said that you have been researching for a week, and already you are ready to give up? Come on! None of us learned all of this overnight. A week is hardly any time to even get your feet wet. I know, you had hoped to learn the basics and dive right in, am I right? Don't give up so easily. Learn some more, let it come together, then start implementing some of that knowledge, and keep learning! Things are fast-paced in this world. Every time you turn around, things are changing.

Good luck to you and hang in there!

Do your research HERE AT WARRIOR Forum and make your final decision based on your needs and situations. Keep in mind that Blogs are easy to use, without any complex technical tools in place and no programming knowledge necessary. You can install one in 5 minutes, write a post in the same way you would on a word processor, and update your theme and style in seconds, often times for free. That`s it!!!

GoDaddy is user friendly. I have not used them for a while because I started using a different site that is more self directed and technical but go daddy has the documentation to help you with whatever you need.

This step is actually quite simple. Dont get hung up on it. Buy a domain which usually comes with blog hosting , (it should not be more than $20 a year) and push it to wordpress. It sounds too easy, just push it to wordpress but it kind of is. There should be buttons on there where you push and your site goes into wordpress, now you have a wordpress login and a dashboard. Do not let it overwhelm you. At first it looks scary but as you start using it, you learn it really quick. There are all kinds of youtube videos to help you.

Once you have a wordpress, you can implement a them you like (again youtube search it, very easy) and then you have your blog ready to start writing.

One thing you need to ask yourself is, do you want to learn the steps to this or do you just want the blog up. You mentioned you wish there was an option that everything was done for you except the writing part, if you need help send me a message. I can walk you through the first steps or I can get it done for you and would not charge for the labor. But I think there is value in you taking the steps outside your comfort zone to get it set up. It may even turn into your first blog post, here is what I learned...

Bluehost by far has the best web hosting plans and multiple hosting options too. I did not quite understand what you meant when you wrote "Pay for the hosting, then pay for the blogging" I use Bluehost for my blog and I got the domain free for an year. I do agree they might be a trifle expensive when it comes to renewals.
However, You could also explore inMotion, Hostgator or Dreamhost for your hosting needs they have excellent packages to choose from.
Design experience shouldn't be a problem, as long as you are using WordPress as your blogging platform, you will find loads of Free themes to choose from. You can just do a search on Google and choose the one you like the best.
WordPress installation on to your hosting and choosing a theme etc are really easy and simple. They are just a couple of clicks. For further information on that you could read WPbeginner.com. Great resource for learning the WP basics.
    Good Luck.

In terms of hosting, browse for the best offer. Make sure to check real external reviews, especially for customer services.

Secondly, I'd recommend Wordpress. There's many different responsive themes to use and you don't need the technical know-how since it's a content management system.

I use namecheap for domain registration and Veerotech for blog hosting.

Check the WSO section to see if their offer is still open. They usually have a discount.

~$10/year for a .com domain and ~$8 a month for hosting.

One piece of advice. Do not get your hosting and domain registration from the same place.

If you ever have problems with your host, and they also control your access to your domain, they can pretty much freeze you out. If the domain is registered elsewhere, you can change a few settings and be back in business in a few hours.

Wow, so many replies while I was away today. I am overwhelmed by all of your attempts to assist me! Let's see what I can do to address everyone...

Omarkenawy: it's entirely possible that blogs are super easy to use, but the setting up of a website sure hasn't seemed to be! Not for me, anyway.

Okay, so the Wordpress DOES come with BH again then? Damn, why does everything keep flipping the script on me in regards to that? I think I'm just drowning in reading stuff. And it's not so much that I expected to learn everything without effort as it is that I didn't expect everything to be so bloody diversified and separate from one another! Whoof. But I appreciate your post. I'm sure I'll keep trying... I'll likely end up just throwing money at Bluehost or Siteground or SOMEONE and seeing what I get and what I can do with it. Heh.

I certainly appreciate the detailed and thoughtful reply. As opposite to everything I've said to this point as it is, I WOULD like to do this all myself just so I have control of everything and am 100% to blame/credit for whatever happens. But the offer is appreciated. Like I said... at some point, I need to just say "eff it" and toss money at my conundrum and see what happens. But thanks!

WarriorWasim: I will look into that, also. Thanks!

I reflect back on my teenage years, and I REALLY miss being ahead of the curve on technology. I used to be able to get my computer games back in the day and change the files around to make them silly or more fun or whatever. I was The Tech Guy of my friends. Now, and this is true, I recently spent 40 minutes one day trying to figure out how to put checkboxes in a Word document. It's like my 20's happened and everything changed and I got the luddite brain. And yet, every overstressed mommy on the planet can operate a blog. How hard can it really be?

Mdshohidulislamrobin: That's... not even a little bit what I asked for. But thanks for not even reading my OP, I guess?

The reason as stated above if you put all your eggs in one basket and something goes wrong, you have a serious problem. But if you have a domain with one company and hosting with an other. One company can not hold you hostage. Personally I have Name Cheap for a few domains and have hosting with both Bluehost for one site and another with Stablehost.

Multiple members on the forum have had their hosting and domains with one company. Then a problem happened that cost them a lot of money and headaches. You would be wise to stick go with namecheap for a domain and another company for hosting. IMHO

Go with the basic package for hosting. You don't need the middle or top of the line packages. Stay away from godaddy for webhosting. If you choose them for a domain they jack the price up the next year. Do a search here you will see multiple threads from people that had issues recently with "hostgator". Good luck putting your site together. Oh by the way use a free wordpress theme to start since you are on a budget. Go with the 2016 version to start. Good luck and get started !

Yeah, I found out that running a blog was not hard and it was the first thing I did in IM. I found out back then ( 9 years ago) that I stagnated though doing this. I was not building my assets as far as making my own Products. Did not push myself to learn to make videos and E-books etc..etc..

I just blogged and that's all I did and run CPA and Adsense. Of course many of these successful bloggers do the product creations stuff but many like myself did not.

    Hi B,

A lot of folks have the tech stuff covered above - awesome - so I'd add to get hyper clear on the the pop culture/entertainment from a humorous angle, because getting clear makes your blogging life easier.

Meaning, every post should align 100% with that niche.

You'd be commenting on blogs related to the niche too. To build friendships with successful entertainment bloggers and to drive traffic, and build brand awareness.

You seem to have a passion for this niche. Awesome. That passionate energy fuels your journey.

Focus on creating and connecting with top bloggers in the niche and you will rock it out.

    Happy Blogging.

It's not all that difficult. If you read the fine print, that "free" domain offer is only good for the first year. After that, you pay market price anyway. And if you do end up in a tiff with your combined host/registrar, they have all the leverage.

Once you get through the initial set up process, having the two separately isn't that big a deal. Once a year, I pay my domain renewal. After losing a domain for renewing late, I set up automatic renewal, so renewing just means I get an email saying the charge is coming and one when it actually renews. I get an invoice for hosting by email once a month. It, too, is on autopay, so I get another email saying the invoice has been paid.

    How complicated is that?

I've used Hostgator for years but I've recently looked into adding Let's Encrypt! and with Hostgator I'd have to get a dedicated IP. With other hosts like SiteGround I can use Let's Encrypt! on their shared hosting plans so I'll probably be switching soon.

    HOSTING:

    Hosting service I would highly
    Recommend would be Inmotion hosting.

I ran many websites through them and they were flawless for speeds and reliability. Their customer service is really
Great and I used their chat many times when transferring a website across to Inmotion hosting.

You can also check out a place called WPengine if you make a blog through Wordpress.

I'm going through Ramit Sethi's Zero To Launch Flagship course and he recommends them highly.

In our ZTL Facebook groups. I've read how some people did not go through with WPengine and paid for
It dearly when their site crashed during their product launch.

I would not recommend Godaddy or host gator.

Both of Those I found very slow. On many occasions to load up webpages.

They were cheaper but that's exactly why. They're not the best.

I use Site5 for all my web hosting needs. They are a bit on the expensive side but the service is too good.

I use both hostgator and bluehost. It seems like you have to pay 12 months+ up front these days. I don't remember seeing an option for month to month.
