YouTube ditches unskippable 30-second ads - BBC News

Good news from a viewer's perspective - personally I find the "unskippable" ones annoying - but from a marketing perspective I suppose this will make the "skippable" ones more expensive.

Good riddance. That kind of advertising is why so many people are using adblockers nowadays.

I never knew Youtube had unskippable 30 second ads! The only ads I see are those you can stop after 5 seconds of viewing.

It would have been a pain in the neck to watch 30 seconds of an unwanted and often seen ad. So many repeated ads!

    Really?

30 seconds isn't too awfully bad. 15 seconds would be much better for unskippables.

It seems they are testing even longer unskippable ad lengths. Just this weekend I tried Viewing a live event only to be presented with an unskippable ad that was nearly 4 minutes long.

Once I realized how long that video ad was, and because I was missing out on live coverage of an event, I refreshed the webpage and got a new ad that was skippable. and managed to get to the live event after the 5 second countdown.

I think 30 seconds is tolerable, but 4 minutes is way too much.

Its interesting that they are announcing this almost a year before they will implement it.

YouTube is to scrap "unskippable" 30-second advertisements on the video-streaming service, from 2018.

I don't usually suffer from those forced ads on my desktop with adblocker plus enabled. Good news overall though!

What I hate about YouTube is that there are only about 3 different ads I get shown. Is that the same for everyone else?

I got shown the TfL Oyster card one about 150 times, and I see the same mobile gaming ads dozens of times. I never download the games because I have enough games.

From the advertising perspective, losing one of those duration options is not a good thing as I like to have more options at my disposal. From the viewers perspective, those 30 second unskippable ads are so annoying that I almost always change videos when I see them...the exception being if I REALLY want to watch that specific video.

I can imagine that it also DAMAGES brands

You want your brand in front of people who are interested in the PROBLEM you're solving

You don't want to ram your BRAND down people's throats and make them gag on it

As it is, it seems Youtube's FORCED ad system slaps people around the face with the advertiser's branded message

The worst are the 'feel good' situational ads

Those make me want to immolate myself

I don't really like the Youtube ads. If you want to sell me something put it in your actual video... but I also have never invested in the ad free version of Youtube so its my fault if I have to sit through ads... prefer to skip though.

From the comments here, it looks as though YouTube has made the right choice on this.

YouTube will stop serving unskippable 30-second ads to users in 2018, Google announced on Friday.

The company will instead push its other unskippable ad formats, including the 6-second ad unit it launched in April and its 20-second ads. (We first spotted the story on Campaign.)

A Google spokesperson told Business Insider: "We've decided to stop supporting 30-second unskippable ads as of 2018 and focus instead on formats that work well for both users and advertisers."

According to YouTube, more than half of its video views come from mobile users, where a 30-second ad can negatively affect consumers with a smaller data plan.

The video sharing website also faces competition from Facebook, which began testing mid-roll ads, allowing advertisers to insert ads after users have watched 20 seconds of a video, earlier this year.
