I just changed mine and it still needs a bit of tweaking, but I'm using a free WP theme that's pretty cool. You can look at it from here: EZ Ebook Templates

And, I'm using another WP theme separate from that one for my membership area for the same site here: EZebt Membership Site

I list the above so you can see the difference in themes and what you can find that is top quality for free online.

  http://www.howtospoter.com - my main blog and format changes but still oriented toward my audience. So I would suggest you decide who is your audience and than look at what blogs in that niche are popular and how they are presented. More than likely they have already tested what is effective and what not and optimized blog for that niche.
  
  All you have left to do - is follow the lead, at least in basics. Do make your blog unique :-) while borrowing general ideas
