If You Don't Have Anything Constructive to Say...Shut Up!

by giveusallfreedom 9 replies
This is rant two today, and normally I try to avoid them all together. Must be the caffeine.

I'm going to make this quick.

This is a free forum. You can by all rights post whatever you want as long as it follows the rules and the mods don't delete it.

That being said. As a courtesy to many of the marketers that are kind enough to come here and post their great ideas and experiences, stop attacking them as people.

If you disagree with what they say, then state why and possibly offer your own insights.

I've seen one poster in particular ATTACK a couple of marketers who have made honest valuable contributions to this forum. It was NOT an attack on what they said, it was an attack on them personally that had almost nothing to do with the topics being discussed in the thread.

I'm sure many of my fellow Warriors will agree that this will make the WF a much more constructive and valuable place to participate in.

If I'm way off then just ignore this thread and it will go away.

Thanks for your time.

Couldn't agree more... and I love a good rant.

People seem to forget that there are "people" at the other end of the thread. Not only that, but "people" reading it too. These people could be future clients, if you show them what sort of person you are, and are capable of being.

I have my moments, mostly with trolls... and I'm not perfect, but I'd like to think I have respect for others, and even if I don't respect someone's opinion, I have enough self respect not to get personal.

    Kindest regards,
    Karl.

      Karl,

That's alright. Trolls aren't real people like you and me.

Hey man, it's okay. I'm used to it by now. I've almost gotten to the point
where I just shrug it off.

There are always going to be people who don't agree with you and call
you an idiot. To me, it makes THEM look bad, not me.

    Nice rant.

LOL... I know what you mean. Personally, you can call me every name in the book, call me the spawn of Satan (it's happened), or anything else you can think of. You can't hurt my feelings at this point.

And actually the people that were the subjects of the attacks handle it with incredible style and like you said won them major points in my book.

I made this post more so that hopefully the person doing it would read it and get a life. One time in a moment of weakness and anger I understand. Doing it on a regular basis for no reason and to no viable end, just seems like it poisons the forum.

I had my fair share of (silent) strops when my posts got moved or deleted by the mods in the old forum.

I'm beginning to wonder if that was, in fact, a price worth paying.

        Cheers,

        Neil

          Hi G.U.A.F.,

I'm quite blunt and often deliberately word things provocatively.

I usually examine what I write, and occasionally, (usually after taking some advice) I withdraw the comment and apologise. On other occasions, I find that my motivation is often hidden deep, but the reaction I have received to a provocative comment has spawned a useful dialogue and I often find that I have achieved my aim by pricking a nerve and getting to the core of the issue.

The kind of thing you refer to will never go away and in a lot of cases, I think it has it's place and does a lot of good - although there are many shades and personal attacks aren't particularly useful. Many of the best and most useful threads here are heated debates though.

For example, it's not very often we get pasionate about html. But conversely, when it comes to discussions about marketing, ethics, little guys, big guys, people 'pushing the line' of common decency in their marketing...those subjects get passionate really easily and there is usually a lot to learn.

For me personally, it doesn't really bother me too much when someone doesn't like me or what I say or if they attack me personally. They don't really know me, and I have broad shoulders and enjoy a bit of sport and verbal tennis.

Plus, as I said, I'm not one to hold back, so for me it goes with the territory. It would be pretty hypocritical of me to whinge if someone laid into me on here...besides, I could always butt-kiss my way out of it.

LOL Come on Mike. Like anyone would accuse you of not having something constructive to say.
