What niche would you switch to with my credentials?

Hi Everyone,

I would like to know what you would do if you had my credentials (not bragging).

I have been a national television and radio expert in the education field. I also hosted and produced an education-related tv show.

Here's the situation...

I would like to try something new.

What niche, if I used my experiences and platform, could I switch in to?

I was thinking about starting a podcast, or getting into the self development niche (i.e. speaking/books). Would my credentials give me credibility? Would I have an edge over my competition (granted I produce quality content)?

What would you switch to if you had my credentials?

Thanks

  • It's hard to give an opinion without details. Why not just post some links to what and who you were and what you did? And some things are really vague there. For instance, "education field" - what does that mean? Just "education" in general, or some specific field of education?

Are you an actual expert or do you play one on TV.

What qualifies you as an expert? What is your level of education?

To answer the above two questions...I have my Master's Degree in both elementary and high school education.

My 20 years of teaching along with my media exposure, I believe, give me expert status.

Any ideas on how I can transition into another niche?

As an educator I would think you have a leg up on lots of marketers. People want to learn things. You can transition into any niche you want. Do some market/niche research find something you believe would be profitable and use your skills to provide some actionable info for your site visitors.

You could also provide your service to marketers. There are many that are experts in their particular field but have no ability to teach what they know. You could be a product creator for individuals for a fee or joint venture.

Your possibilities are endless in this field

If you are looking for a more 'individual' business - how is your speaking voice? Audible Books is a growing business and experience in both teaching and public speaking might be a good fit.

Join Udemy and make your own e-learning video training courses as an instructor. You could choose familiar niche education topics similar to those you worked with on TV etc. You could also create courses for topics common to all small business ( < 500 employees), find those business and market your courses and training to them. E-learning is a growth industry. Do your research and build your sales model.

Thanks Kay King...I am toying with the idea of a book about personal success accompanied by videos, interviews, a podcast, and articles.

I don't get it, you want to use existing credentials but forget the past? Why?

Well, try something new. That could be anything under the sun.

Whatever you choose, I'd do video in addition to a podcast as it's pretty easy to do both. Video can be used for content for things like Youtube, Udemy as well as being able to create your own info products.

You've done all this stuff and don't have any business connections?

          I don't understand the thread.

You don't want to use what you've already learned, you want to use only the credentials and you want random people on the internet to tell you what you're interested in doing next as long as it doesn't involve education.

Personally I wouldn't care about your credentials outside of an education related niche. Why would I, care as a buyer? Would you care If someone had a degree in education while they're selling you a car?

Unfortunately, my business connections are mostly parents, principals, and other teachers.

The thread isn't too hard to understand. I wouldn't go as far as becoming a car salesman which has absolutely nothing to do with education. Rather, I am looking towards using my education credentials and skills in something along the lines of...helping online marketers in their teaching methods, or creating a site that helps people 'learn' how to improve their existing or new work skills.

I don't want to pursue anything in elementary or high school education.

The reason I am asking 'strangers' online is due to the fact that I am not knowledgeable about 'business', internet marketing, or the such, and I though this would be a good place to start.

              Hi theteach,

First thing is you need to understand people don't like "learning". . .

              they like to "discover".

Most successful people and those that are not successful in IM tend to be a little antiestablishment. Most entrepreneurs go against the grain.

The way I read your statement above is you know what you want to do.

The issue with the two statements is they both sound like work and in the IM space people want it to NOT sound like WORK.

As for helping online marketers improve their teaching skills maybe take a look at what Donald Miller has done with StoryBrand or take a look at Storied.

As for helping people improve their work skills that sounds like an employment agency or training organisation. Those places tend to function on government handouts where they are paid to re-train people to re-enter the workforce.

If you are to leverage your skills and build a business online then you need to survey prospects to find out what they need.

The problem with experience nowadays is the industries and areas where people have solid experience is dying and young people don't want to necessarily get skilled up in things that they don't feel will help them in the future.

You might be better off starting a business incubator or coding school or something that is pert of a sunrise industry.

It seems as though although experience is good.

              New experience is better.

This is what education is really all about.

              Equipping people for the future.

You are from an education background so you should be fully equipped to change careers.

Unfortunately with the speed of change today and the spread of Globalisation you will need to think carefully about the course you are about to embark on.

Discover that place. . .don't learn about it.

              Best regards,

              Ozi

                Thanks Ozi,

I will take a look at Storied.

If you have several years of teaching experience and you've appeared in the media, you would be the perfect candidate, in my mind, to teach other up-and-coming speakers about effective public speaking skills.

You could be brought in as a coach at the various speakers' associations monthly meetings. Of course, it's also a good idea to have a published book to sell at the back of the room at your lectures ... as you stated above.

No disrespect intended, but basically your credentials, in and of themselves, mean very little outside the field of education. The 20+ year old masters degree tells people that at one time in the past you finished an advanced college course. Twenty years of teaching means you were employed to do the same thing over and over for twenty plus years.

Much more important, at least as I see it, is what those credentials have enabled you to do, and transfer value to someone who would pay for it. I've known teachers (and former teachers) over the years whose only demonstrable skill outside of their subject matter area was an ability to avoid getting fired.

To at least try to end this on a positive note, I'd say you'd be better served to come up with ways you can add value to peoples' lives, lead them to some kind of transformation, and use your experience and credentials as a backstop to show you earned your way to learning what you propose to teach.

    Here's what I mean...

Instead of saying "I have a master's degree and twenty years of teaching", you'd say that as a former teacher with a master's degree, you learned concepts of learning and spent twenty years refining those concepts in the real world working with hundreds/thousands of students. Now I'm applying those concepts to [new niche].

Add a few specific examples, show how they relate to your new venture.

    Now your background has value.

OP, you are an IDEAL candidate for a KINDLE-based multi platform PERSONALITY-driven MEDIA empire.

    No joke.

Start with your book series on Kindle supplemented by lots of guest posts at authority sites.

    Move to Youtube

    The possibilities are ENDLESS

You need the RIGHT personality though but based on how you described yourself, it appears you have enough INNER WILL to make it happen.

I'm currently in the teaching niche (but only as a software guy). It's a huge niche and full of opportunities, especially if you're a qualified teacher.

If I needed cash I would:

    Become a consultant.
Make resources for teachers (there's a whole vast niche here).
    Do something with conferences.
    Write for teacher magazines.
Become a non exec at an educational institution.

May I ask which niche do you specialize in during your national TV and radio days?

Or do you specialize in a variety of niches?

With your experience in hosting and presentation, I will suggest you do webinars by leveraging on Go-To-Webinar and Webinar-Jam platforms.

As well as Google Hangouts and Youtube Live Videos

I a lot of people would like to know how to become a radio or television expert. You could write a book or create a course on how to achieve that goal. The fact that you accomplished that feat makes you credible.

Also, self-help products for teachers could be a good niche. "How to stay sane in the chaos of the classroom", "Dealing with parents without stress", "The secret to becoming a happy teacher" etc.

Many teachers I know would like to move on to another field. Once you've done so, you can then write about what you did.
