Help - should I avoid a good, but similar Domain name if I really like it???

I would like to secure a Domain name that, I think, is available..... but there is a similar one already out there but has an "I" in front of it..... let's say I want "marketplace.com" as it succinctly defines my business, but "Imarketplace.com" already exists.... I don't want to steal any of their business, nor do I want any legal troubles.... any recommendations appreciated.

thx - Joel

    Hi Joel,

There is nothing illegal in using similar domain of other popular websites until or unless you try duplicating what they do.

But it is true that there will be a slight confusion among the visitors if you are trying to use similar domain of popular websites, and it may seem fake too. For example, if you create a website with domain name "google45.com" or "yourtube.com", etc, even if these website serves entirely different than the well known brands, but still it may bring a bad impression among the visitors that you are trying to duplicate things.

It is always good to go for unique domain.

Hope my information would help you.

Thanks for the reply.... I grabbed the domain last night because I was reading where someone will take it just because you searched for it and then upcharge you....... thanks again for your reply, and I think it won't be viewed as trying to copy.

Yes. My blog uses 4 words in the domain and someone tried to sell me 3 of the 4 words as a domain. I refused and today it's a redirect to a totally different website... that would benefit from my traffic if I had a lot of it. Anyway, I'm slow and facing health challenges, so I'm focused on my own personal growth now (hence that topic!)... so while I do have a lot of content, I focused on that first while I'm healing. I don't have much traffic so they wasted their time because that's going to probably take longer than their patience in renewing the "better" domain but still it's frustrating. Good that you grabbed it! Best wishes.

Getting a new domain name and having issues on whether you should register it or not is the easy part.

Getting traffic that gets you sales, that is going to be your biggest challenge.

Depends if there is a trademark.

    Would you register iFacebook.com?

As long as you aren't infringing on a trademark I don't see the problem.
