Need Writer To Create Summary of Business Book

Hello,

I'm interested in hiring a writer to do a summary of a business book. The final summary will be around 5000 words. What is the best place to find a writer to do this type of task? How much would something like this cost?

Thanks
E

Hard to say, depends a little on the length of the original too. I mean, if it's a 1000-page book, condensing that down to 5000 words is somewhat more involved than condensing 8000 words down to 5000 words, obviously!

I would be interested in hearing what other people have to say on this, actually. Speaking as a university-educated native English speaker, who would do a top-notch job, I doubt I would be willing to do this for much less than $500-$1000 - it might be even more, depending again on the amount of actual reduction needed. I bet there are people willing to do it for a lot less - question is, can you live with having it done by someone who is a semi-native speaker in somewhere like India etc. who will do a less-than-perfect job?

You need to place an ad for the work (here and on freelance site perhaps) - and let write give you a quote.

5000 words of writing could be from $100 - to $250 depending on skill level, experience, etc.

BUT you also need someone who can read and summarize - and that's a skill in itself.

If I read an ad for this work, I'd wonder who holds copyright - so might want to address that in the ad. Also, be very clear in your expectations - do you want a summary written as a text or an outline - do you want the summary to follow the table of contents of the book or to combine topic/headlines/chapters into a more readable version? List every detail that you want included - and make that part of a 'project description' - then let the writers come to you with samples and prices.

Exactly this - I personally doubt I would do any sort of quality writing in that kind of quantity for under $250, but there is much more involved here than just writing. Reading, analysing and summarising a given text (indeed, an entire book!) is NOT a skill everyone possesses, by any stretch of the imagination, and involves a whole lot more work. It's the kind of skill generally learned at university level - though I am sure there are some great natural talents out there. Just beware of "too-good-to-be-true" offers. Get a sample of their work for one thing.

Of course, just be very careful. Look for established writers - you pay for what you get, you really do.
