Are you struggling with Wordpress? (Video 6 - Installing themes and plugins)

by Andy Fletcher 81 replies
I'm in the process of making some tutorial videos for how to use Wordpress (amongst other scripts) and figured I could kill two birds with one stone and give something back to the Warrior Forum while I'm at it.

Are you having any difficulties with Wordpress? Need help setting up a theme or plugin? Don't know how to do something?

Post your questions in this thread and I'll do my best to answer them for you.

I know it's not totally relevant to what you were asking as it's not how to use Wordpress BUT I'll ask anyway , I'd really like a video on how to transfer a wordpress blog from one server to another (I sell blogs on Sitepoint sometimes).

How about... How to create your own theme from scratch in Wordpress...

you could cover splicing a theme, and everything else that goes along with it.

That's exactly what I was going to ask. Last night, it took me hours to reconstruct a blog on a different server. The problem was due to database user names and passwords and some entries located in the WP database. I need a clean tutorial with all the details, especially the database issues laid out. Also, how to do a routine WP backup would be nice...

Just been doing that, and almost finished version 1.0. While the basic ideas involved (hooking into wordpress) are quite easy, managing the content and database during different views can certainly be tricky. If you have any specific questions I'd be glad to help

Thanks for the video, Andy. I did not know it was this simple to transfer a WP blog.
Will this also work in older versions of WP, such as WP 2.3 ?

      Thanks,

I'm not 100% sure when they introduced the import/export functionality but I'm pretty sure it was some time ago. The only difference (as far as I'm aware) is the layout of the admin interface has changed a fair bit recently so you may find the links are in different places.

Couldn't you get around this by just backing up the database? Then importing it into the new database?

If you go over the 2MB limit (this will be different between the various hosting providers out there since it's a PHP setting, not specific to Wordpress) then you'll need to do as suggested here and do a MySQL export/import of the data instead.

That's because 2MB is the default that you get out of the box so if the hosting providers don't change anything this is what they get

Thanks for the video but I wanted to point out one thing because I think there was some confusion. This method will work if you are backing up your blog. If you are transferring the blog because you sold it to someone else and it is going to go on their server you need to backup the database as well. This is done in your Cpanel and using phpmyadmin. Its a little bit more complicated then that. The Wordpress website has some good documentation: http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress

Just read through this and you should be fine because it breaks down all the scenarios and walks you through what you need to do.

Why won't this work to transfer a blog to the new owner? As far as I'm aware the export function exports everything except themes and plugins.

I dug a little deeper and found that you are correct. This feature should work for most people. One thing to make sure is there seems to be a file size limit for your xml file when using this option within Wordpress. Most sites will be fine. But, for some large blogs it might not work correctly so you would have to use the database backup.

One other article I found was from a few months back and they ran into problems with the Wordpress /upload folder not backing up. So everything transferred correctly except images and videos they had uploaded. I am not sure if this is still the case or not with the updated Wordpress version or not but it is something to look out for. I assume you would want to copy that folder along with your theme and plugin folder.

The other issue some people seemed to have with this option was when they were importing/exporting different Wordpress Versions. I would probably play it safe by making sure the two versions of Wordpress match each other just in case.

I have always used the database backup with Mysql which is a little more in depth and never tried this route. Thanks for the info it was very helpful.

      Hi Carol,

Watch the video I posted above, it's about moving blogs from one host to another (ie when you sell them). In your case you'd do exactly the same thing except it's hosted in the same place and you'll just restore from backup.

Let me know if you need any further help with this.

    Andy,

I think it is a good idea and will be helpful to many. My biggest problem right now is including RSS feeds onto my website. Basically, including eBay RSS auction feeds onto several pages on a Wordpress site. There seems to be many plugins that assist with this, but many seem to be obsolete/broken, and I really don't know where to start. That's what I think thanks.

I use the BayRSS plugin (non-affiliate link) to display EBay auctions on my WP sites. It is easy to use, and I can recommend it.

and Hamida thanks for asking the question. I always got crossed up

seems so self evident I don't know why I tend to forget it.

Do yourself a favor. Avoid using wordpress.com for your blog at all costs. If you plan on having any affiliate links it will eventually get shut down/disabled by the mods at wordpress.

Get a hosting account with cPanel and put your blog on that site. It will provide more options for you as far as modifications and plugins go... and you will never have to worry about the content of your blog such as affiliate links getting you shut down.

      I speak from experience.

As recommended above I'd definitely go for hosting Wordpress yourself. A bit of extra effort to setup, then way better/easier etc.

A common cause for this functionality to be missing is a badly behaved plugin. Try disabling your plugins and see if that brings them back. If so switch them on and off individually to see if you can find which one is doing it.

If you download and install the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin and activate it then upgrading is pretty much reduced to clicking "next", "next", "next" in the wizard it gives you.

The only stopper you may have is you'll need to change the directory permissions to enable the plugin to save the backup files.

If anyone has any difficulties let me know and I'll turn this into a full video.

        Hey Andy,

Are there any Wordpress tutorial videos out there that walk you
through the whole process of setting up a blog on your own website
        from scratch.

I've also read that many of the free themes have code embedded
that is suspect.......how do you know which are the best safe
        themes to download.

What do you do, if you start with one theme and then later decide
to change it to another.....is it a simple procedure? I think
being unsure of this one thing is what stops many people from
getting a blog up and going?

Have you looked at Wordpress Direct Auto WordPress Installer (no aff. link)
I would be interested in your thoughts on this site?

        Regards

I don't know of any, that's largely why I'm making some

I've not heard of this myself and I'm not really sure what someone could do to a Wordpress theme. Still, if you want to be sure that a theme is safe stick to the big theme sites and stick with themes that have a lot of downloads, which means they're more likely to have been checked by someone.

Changing themes in Wordpress takes pretty much no effort. There's a "design" section which lists all the themes you have installed. You click on one and say "make it active". Job done.

Have you looked at Wordpress Direct Auto WordPress Installer (no aff. link)
I would be interested in your thoughts on this site?
It looks like a pretty standard spam blog creating piece of software. It'll probably work for a while then Google will find a way to mass ban blogs built with it like they've done with so many others. How long a while is and how successful it'll be during that time is anyone's guess.

If it was that successful though you can be sure the author would just be running thousands of copies of it himself and not giving it away (almost certainly as a frontend to selling you something).

Just my 2c, maybe it's awesome, I've not tried it

          Hope this helps.

I just saw your video. Geez, if it really works that easily I could just whack my thumb with a hammer. How annoying that is. I assume that the WP installations have to both be at the same revision level? Thanks for the vid, nice job BTW.

        Hi Andy,

        Awesome thread, thank you!

        Couple of questions for you:

        1. Just viewed the video on transferring WP to a new server. Would it be important to deactivate the plugins before copying stuff over, or is that irrelevant?

        2. How can we keep tabs on your upcoming WP videos?

        Thanks!

As far as I know it doesn't matter whether they are activated or not.

          2. How can we keep tabs on your upcoming WP videos?

you made the wordpress upgrade sound so easy, I decided to go ahead. Fortunately, I chose one of my blogs that didnt have too much content. I used the automatic upgrade plugin and there was an error. Now my site is in forever maintenance mode and my content is gone.

I did do a backup, but I have no clue how to put it on the site again! Could you maybe do a video for that?

Thanks for all you've done so far, they are great.

      Carol,

This is the plug-in that you need - WordPress Automatic Upgrade 1.2 Release

Make sure that you're using it.

Your webhost should be able to help you get the site back up with your database backup.

Hi Cindy, I can help with that one and don't worry, your not a dunder head for asking, I had to as well LOL

If you want to make it static, you need to go to the dashboard and click "settings" then click on "Reading".

You will then see near the top "front page displays" (this is in the latest version of WP).

You can see where to select "Static" and I think once you make your first page (so follow these instructions after you have done that), the page you want to be the first page will then appear in the drop down list of which page should be first, select the page.

After that, you just always choose to write a "page" instead of a "post" and those pages will be listed, if you want them to be in your sidebar on the page you choose to be the home page.

      Hope that helps.

Andy... that was awesome. I didn't know that plugin existed. I've always upgraded my blog the manual way. I even avoided this last upgrade because I just upgraded it 2 weeks prior to that release being available. This plugin makes it easy to upgrade.

        Thanks, Sue!

This was very helpful. I went into my wp-admin and played around with this a bit. I couldn't quite get it to do everything I wanted it to do, but at least I got some of the functionality to work (all the links were showing up above my header - apparently I need to go play with theme files to change that).

Andy, I know Sue did a great job describing this, but if you have some spare time, I wouldn't mind seeing a video of the process as well. I'd like to make sure it really is my theme file settings and not something strange I'm doing when creating my test static pages.

If I use WordPress to create a site full of static pages which I continually add to, will I still get some google-love out of this? (...assuming I'm SEO optimizing everything in the same ways...)

Also, I hear somebody brought beer to this party. Where's the bar - I need a drink! LOL

Thanks, again! This is a great thread.

    Hi Andy,

Thanks for this thread. Here is my questions (I hope this is not a repeat that I missed as I skimmed through):

I now have WP hosting my blog. I started it on December 4, 2007 and to date have more than 550,000 hits, have sold more than $20,000 in eBooks and I am #1 on Google for my niche.

I don't want to upset this very fruitful applecart. But I would like to host the blog on my own domain now. How can I transfer my site so that I am hosting it from my own domain and not lose the great position I have now?

I have thought of just linking to the WP hosted site from my domain . . .

    Thanks so much!

    JJP,

Yeah, I agree completely.. I haven't downloaded the plug-in yet but I did not know about it until this thread. Great thing to know.

I did the same thing you did .. updated once and then two weeks later had to update again. Kind of a nuisance. If this program does what it says it does (& I don't doubt it) it would be very helpful

    Andy,
I watched the video and it was great! I had no idea it was so simple to do that. However, while very helpful, I suppose I should have been a little more specific. (I haven't been able to do much work on my site since I last posted, or looked too indepth) but what I want to do w/ the eBay RSS is this:
I don't want to post the RSS as a post. Instead, I want the RSS on my static WP pages. Just as an example I'll lay it out like this:
    Page 1- Budweiser
    Page 2- Michelob
    Page 3- Coors Light
Page 4- Guinness (am I making anyone thirsty??? lol)
and on each (mostly static) page, link out via RSS to eBay products for the specific brand. And also incorporate information above, below and around the eBay products.
I know it will require special styling, and I don't expect you to make a video explaining CSS but I just wanted to clarify what I was asking: putting eBay RSS onto Static Pages.

Someone recommended bayRSS and I imagine that will help me to accomplish my goal. I really appreciate your efforts on the video, I never thought of doing things that way (rss to Posts) and I may adopt some variation of that method in the future. And it's obvious the video has helped more than just me. Good stuff.

    Anywho, thanks!

I don't know about anyone else, but sometimes it's a real challenge for me to find a theme that is structurally appropriate that also has relevant and suitable (or at least neutral) graphics.
