The Very First Step for Actually Making Money Online

Do me a favor.

Take out your phone and open up Google Maps.

Click on "get directions" and for the destination... leave it empty.

Are you going to get anywhere?

Probably not, if you don't have an end destination, you either STAY where
you are, or you drive around and get lost.

See, it's the knowing WHERE you're going that's important.

Why?

Because when you know where you're going, you can backtrack and
figure out how to get there.

You can find the actual steps to take, to go from Point A, which
is where you are now... to Point B, which is where you WANT to go.

The thing is, most online marketers, if they haven't made any real money online...
it's because of this same exact thing.

They have NO destination to head towards. So, they stay right where they are...
or they go online and drive around in circles... no end destination in sight.

You may have heard the phrase "you can't hit a target you can't see"?

Well, the truth is, you can't make money online if you don't know HOW you're
going to do it.

Because if you don't have an end destination... a Point B... what are you supposed
to do first?

What comes next?

Exactly.

It's just like driving around without a map... you don't know where you're
going or where you're headed, because the END destination hasn't been decided.

If you want to make money online, you need to have a clear path, a clear picture.

You need to know exactly how you're going to do it, so you can then create your map to get you there.

With a map to make money online, you can actually create the steps to go from Point A to Point B.

Let's say you want to sell an ebook online.

Still not clear enough.

Let's say you want to sell an ebook on helping people lower their blood sugar, which is helpful to diabetics.

Okay, now you're getting clearer, so you can start to write out the steps and make your map.

Maybe step one, is to write out your solution on a word document. You research for days, on how to naturally lower blood sugar.

Then, you put that word document into a PDF file.

Then, next step may be to head to Fiverr to get an ebook cover made.

Then, you get a domain and hosting, use Wordpress, Clickfunnels, or a number of other things.

**Side note**

Don't get too caught up on the TOOLS you need... that alone can cause you to stop taking action.

You wonder all day long "clickfunnels or leadpages".... "godaddy or hostgator?"

So, all of this internal debating on the best tool to use, keeps you STUCK.

You're better off taking action with ANY tool, than staying stuck by choosing none.

** End Side note**

Okay, so you have your pdf ebook, your cover, your domain and hosting.

Now, create a simple sales letter to sell that ebook. Go online and find out the biggest problems that people with high blood sugar deal with.

That way, you can position your ebook in a way that solves those problems. Make sure you fill your sales letter with benefits that help the reader decide that "this is in my best interests"

Once your sales letter is done, maybe you make a squeeze page to collect email addresses, so you can send a free chapter.

You also sign up for Aweber or Getresponse so you can send people the free chapter, as well as follow up with email to help further the sale.

And finally, you decide it's time to get traffic.

Well, there's Adwords, Facebook ads, organic social media, articles, SEO, and many other ways to get traffic.

But again, it's got to be something you see clearly, have written down, and is an actual step you take... because you see the end destination clearly.

See the difference that having an end goal... and end destination can make?

It helps you see clearly the steps you need to take, to go from point A to point B.

Without knowing your end goal, you have no idea what step to take first. Or second. Or at all.

So, more than likely, you just stay stuck.. spinning your wheels doing the same stuff that hasn't been working.

It makes more sense to just PICK your end goal. It doesn't have to be permanent, you can change it.

But pick something, so you can work your way back from there... and fill in all the action steps you need to take, in order to arrive at that end destination.

Without having an end goal in mind.... you stay stuck because you don't know exact steps to take.

With an end goal, you can fill out your road map, find out each step you have to take, and then TAKE it.

This continual action, doing the steps that matter when it comes to making money... this action will soon add up and the momentum will help you see your first real money coming in sooner, rather than never.

Believe me, after 17 years of doing this, I can honestly say that the only way to make REAL money online is to have an end goal in mind, a target to aim for.

That way, you can SEE the steps to take.

You can TAKE the action steps.

And you can make it your reality.

      Only problem . . .

It may be quite a short video. And nowadays the trick is to keep people viewing for as long as possible.

      Thanks, matey.

Long story short: woke up to a Capuchin monkey tying a rope to my wedding tackle, dragged on a plane, flown to a hollowed-out fortress of (not entirely, as it turns out) solitude, home to a megalomaniacal filmmaker and an army of talking primates, few things happened, quite a few, the odd moment of agitated buttocks, flown back home, few more things happened, had a cup of tea.

Upshot, nice to be back, especially rather nice to be free of the rope, and especially-especially rather nice to see a friendly face. Won't be posting much outside of the War Room any more but I still find myself jumping into the odd thread. Can't help myself.

I agree with most of your points, Shawn.

This would be one of the exceptions:

      I'd amend that to read:

The suggestion, otherwise, is that one only has to know the steps in order to achieve an end result.

I, for instance, know the steps to lose half a stone, and yet here I am eating my third bacon sandwich of the day.

Knowing how to achieve something, even if we assume the knowledge is accurate, is not the same as being able to achieve it.

And to suggest otherwise will give people false hope.

In a marketing context: Joe Newbie may understand the steps required to grow a 50K newsletter, but when he takes action, when he begins to grow that newsletter, well, reality intervenes.

And reality comes in many shapes and sizes.

      And is known many names.

Two names, for instance, are Inability and Laziness.

George Lucas knew how to give us Star Wars: A New Hope, but a handful of years later he gave us Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace.

Did Lucas forget how to bring about the right end result, or did something else happen, did reality intervene?

      Most likely, reality.

A professor of English Literature has a burning desire to write a bestselling novel.

      He understands the steps.

      Why, he teaches the steps.

If anyone understands how to get onto the tippy-top of the New York Times Bestsellers?

      This man.

      And yet . . .

      And yet - no bestseller.

      No novel, even.

Knowing how to achieve something is not the same as having the ability to achieve it.

Otherwise, Shawn, no major gripes from me. I feel your post offers quite a valuable lesson to beginners, and a useful reminder to everyone else:

      Plan and take action.

      Cheers,

      Tom

Thanks Shawn - another great post.

Your post reminds me of a great quote, one of my favorites, that I think is appropriate for what you're saying about setting a goal and working toward it . . .
"That which we persist in doing becomes easier to do, not that the nature of the thing has changed but that our power to do has increased."
The best to all of you,

    Steve

Awesome advice! I also try to remember that staying disciplined is more important than staying motivated. Motivation is necessary but discipline gets you where you want to be.

Horace Greeley once said, "Go west, young man..."

Problem is, depending on where you start, sooner or later you are going to get wet. Going west might get you started, but knowing how far to go gives you a much better chance at landing where you want to be (and with dry socks...)
