Offline prospecting question (best categories)?...

Might not be what you're looking for but have you considered just using the Yellow Pages?

The BBB in most towns has their own yellow pages. These tend to be mostly b2c businesses.

Your local chamber of commerce should have a directory as well.

Unfortunately, you're not going to get a 100% refined, scrubbed list, but depending on what kind of marketing you intend to do (direct mail requires a larger universe than door-knocking) there should be a few decent places to start

Hi, EDIT: Just saw your above post. Yes it's a complete list of categories.

There is a service that lists every business in the U.S. many different ways. City, State, Address, Street, Area, Zip and it also lists by category, in other words, enter "florist" or the (I forget the name of the #) number category and all the businesses come up.

It's called Reference USA. It's by subscription and is quite expensive however the good news is that many libraries subscribe to it for their patrons. The best news is they make it available to their patrons Online Free of charge.

If you are not a resident of the City or certain nearby cities then the Library Card is $100 a year. The $100 is well worth the resources available.

It gives names, contact names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, credit ratings, number of employees and covers everything from mom and pop business to major corporations. You are allowed to download xx?? amount of records per day but of course pen and paper or screen shots are unlimited .

A GENERIC list of CATEGORIES -- no names, addresses, phone #'s, zip codes -- nothing!
