Selecting Online Business Niche: Should I follow my heart?

Hi Warriors,

A few days back, I decided to work part time as an Online Affiliate Marketer and was about to create an email list in "Online Business" Niche. I am passionate about this niche and have a fair knowledge in it as well, as I am a full time Digital Marketer (9 - 6 office job - working for a Branding Company). But, I now have after thoughts of choosing this niche.

Some of my concerns are:

1. Many or most Online Business products are scams. Finding the genuine ones and promoting them could be so time consuming

2. When I will be promoting a clickbank online business product or a click bank affiliate membership site like affilorama or an affiliate membershite site like wealthy affiliate, it is easy for people to generate their own affiliate link sooner or later and buy the product through their affiliate link, instead of mine.

3. As most internet business products make tall promises and many or most are scams, the refund of the products I sell could be really high - or else, I have to find products outside clickbank; without a refund option.

Dating is another niche I am passionate about. But, there are not many Clickbank Dating Products with a high gravity or popularity. Google keyword planner results for dating products are also disappointing.

Weight Loss Products are the hottest products in Clickbank. So, I consider promoting them. I am only mildly interested in Weight Loss Products. My knowledge in them is basic or only a bit more basic.

So, I would like to ask your opinion about:

1. Should I follow my heart and choose Online Business - niche or follow my brain and promote weight loss products?
2. Which are the good affiliate networks apart from clickbank for Weight Loss / E-Business / Dating / Self Help etc. Niches?

Thanks for the kind reply. I think I didn't get any other reply as my post was very long.

But, if I select IM niche, don't you think that a good percentage of people who buy from me will figure out how to buy the same product - recurring or otherwise through their own affiliate link - sooner or later? Further, I guess that the refund rates also will be high.

What I think could be a good solution is to start with weight loss niche, then after becoming successful in weight loss niche, try dating niche, as I am passionate about it and then may be self help which is also I am passionate about and then finally create my IM product / membership site and promote it - based on my successful IM experience.

Which one do you know more about. From reading your statements on online business it seems you have passion but not much knowledge

I am a full time digital marketer working for a Branding Company and I am paid a good salary. Whenever I look for a Digital Marketing job, I always get more than 10 job offers. Last time, I got a job offer on the 2nd working day when I started to look for a job.

It should mean that I know at least the basics - no? Now, please share your credentials in Internet Marketing - How much of a profit do you make through Internet Marketing every month? I would like to know whether it matches my salary as a Digital Marketer; so that I will know that you are qualified to make the comment above.

In your day job how many campaigns have you worked on?

How many of them have been successful?

How many of those were you influential in the success?*

Of those how many were you passionate about?

When you are working day in and day out in marketing you don't have the luxury of passion projects. You have to bring your A game for every client regardless of how interested you are in their business.

The question that should be in your head is:

Where can I use my established skillset to give me the highest chance of success?

        * This is really a key question I have a number of people in my company who can claim to work in marketing but who couldn't sell ice in hell.

Luckily its not there job they are coders, graphic designers, receptionists etc

Also for future reference online business, weightloss and dating aren't niches but markets.

Except it's clear from your questions and comments that you don't. What you are paid at your job is irrelevant and going off on anyone who questions your expertise/knowledge isn't a good sign.

Quadragon gave you some excellent advice above.

You might also consider something other than 'affiliate marketing' - if you are in demand for your services, why not set up an online consulting group aimed at online businesses....or create your own info products or software to help online businesses with 'digital marketing'.

I've been promoting CPA/affiliate offers for over 16 years.

If you get your offers through a CPA network, you don't have to worry about getting debited for returns/refunds. there are many that you can get as a direct affiliate as well.

I have done very well promoting dating sites and pretty good promoting weight loss products. However, I mainly promote lead generation offer, because there is no credit card / purchase required to complete an offer, so conversions rates are typically much higher than offers that require a sale to be made.

Dating sites fall into the no purchase required. Which for the most part I prefer to promote only well-known sites. I favor promoting sites that run commercials on tv. This creates built-in credibility that you won't have yourself.

For weight loss, I have always promoted free trials + S&H. The user pays like $5-$9 for shipping and handling and they get something valued at $50-$60+. It is easier to get conversions with free trials than if the user has to pay full price. You ideally want to promote what is hot. For example, what is Dr. Oz talking about. Again, it creates built-in credibility. Also, I have found that using a pre-sell page generates higher conversions.

I have never promoted MMO affiliate offers (not my cup of tea). But what a lot of guys do is promote launches from well know marketers and when not doing that. They promote offers that are evergreen in the marketplace and tend to sell well the majority of the time.

My real preference and what I mainly promote are lead generation offers that have a make, get or save money benefit to them. As it has overall worked the best for me and tend to have the greatest mass appeal (will be of interest to a large general audience). So the potential to produce high volume exists and they are fairly easy to cross-promote on the back-end.

Some of the verticals I have done extremely well with are: insurance, debt, credit, education, mortgage, loans, assistance, discount offers, homeowner offers, etc...

For the most part, everything I promote is about mass appeal and path of least resistance to getting conversions. This is because I don't want to have to spend time educating people / having to get them to know, like and trust me. I do this in other subtle ways that are not work intensive.

However, I do promote a very small number of offers that do require a purchase. Mass appeal still needs to exist, but also offers a true decent discount, is something new/unique/novelty, solves a house is on fire type problem. At the same time, you don't want it to easily be found locally. If it's a new product, if it shows up in Walmart then it's pretty much dead.

    Anyway, hope that helps.

    1: YES!

2: Not sure, because not my niche Alex...but being an Amazon Associate could float your boat.

As for #1, yes, many times over. Because your energy puts everything in motion. Toss in your extensive digital marketing knowledge and you've the recipe for something special because that fun/passion will pull you through times when things do not appear to be coming together, business. That's the key: keeping at it when things seem bleak. Happens to all of us.

The ones who see it through are driven by something inside of them, a passionate fire, not the stuff on the outside like sales and profits and the like.

Happy Online Business Building. I love seeing you follow your passion.

For dating cut out the networks and strike direct deals with the sites themselves.

Only promote the very best sites, and preferably ones you've used yourself.

Other than that, build USEFUL sites. And think beyond simply just blogging.
