My docs say "QUIT NOW!" - but, what do I do with my stuff?

I've been around this forum for a long time, and some of you know that I have Multiple Sclerosis.

Well, I've been dragging my feet, but my docs have decided that it's time for me to quit working - NOW - no more working offline, online, or anywhere else.

But what do I do with my "stuff" - ie: my domain names, websites, ebooks, software, etc.???

A couple of years ago, I tried to give it away (kind of like what AvenueGirl is doing below), but that person just quit pursuing it. A few emails, and then I never heard back.

I'd hate to just shut it down - so, anybody have any suggestions???

    Hi Neil,

    That's tough news to take and your attitude
    to your situation is an inspiration to us all.

    A few suggestions..

    1. Seek out a JV partner who will run your sites
    and pay you a royalty on profits earned.

    2. Set up an auction to sell your sites individually
    or as a package.

    3. Have a firesale and sell resale and/or PLR rights
    to your products.

    Hello ntarvin,

    I am very sorry to hear you have MS, and good on you for keeping going thus far.

    Is there no hope that you might go into remission and you might be able to work again? Can the docs give you a treatment that might offer more hope?

    Because maybe it would be good for you mentally to keep up work interests, even just very part time, to keep your spirits up. Or on the other hand, perhaps you would like to leave work to one side and take up more creative/hobby pursuits.

    If you want to offload your work stuff, 2 ideas are: 1) can you pass it on to a family member or good friend, and give them instructions on what to do with it? Then you would always know how your "work baby" is doing. .... or 2) I don't know if you would be allowed to do this, but could you package it up and then sell to the highest bidder, either here or on ebay?

    Hey Niel,

    I can relate to your situation as my mother has MS and is in the final stage.

    However she still works and received medication on the french system for free, not sure of your location but i know canada and france offer it free.

    You shouldn't stop pursuing your passion, nor should you stop working just because your doctor said so!

    You could just reduce the time you spent working slightly and reduce the number of websites you run so you still keep an income but also so you can try and relax more and look after your health!

    Neil, I have a family member with MS (going on 30 years). I hate to see you quit all of it. Don't the docs know that keeping your mind active is the best medicine? If you were to have a sale, I would certainly be interested, but surely do hate that you need to stop it all. Let us know what you decide.

    Certainly if you have aged domains and sites that any kind of revenue, you should be able to sell them rather than just give them away. Without knowing what exactly you have, it's impossible to say, but there's Flippa for sites, sedo.com for domains, namepros.com where you can sell sites and domains, warrior forum where you can list sites, so I'd sell your assets.

    Sell your assets and you eat once. Partner with someone to take care of them for a revenue share and you have something to live on.

        Sorry to hear of your plight and need to slow down so much. I would think that continuing your normal life to the best of your ability would be the best medicine, however:

        My suggestion would be to find a MS forum and discuss your exact medical condition with others in the same boat. Ask them what your should do.

        I know MS is debilitating, but I really don't know much about it. My answer and many other WF members answers might not really be what you need to hear.

        Could it be that others with MS would give you better answers. I'd really hate to see you give up everything, but I do not know what continuing to work means to your condition.

    Neil,

    Kudos for hanging in there this long. If there's anything we can do to help just let us know.

    Please take what John and Lisa have said- Instead of selling everything, just sell a portion or enter a partnership.

    Make sure there are milestones and performance agreements in place - that way if the person just walks away and stops working the sites, you or your assigns can re-take control and find someone else to work the system.

    If they work out well you can provide a bonus or increase their share of the business - depending on your thoughts and goals.

    That way you can either completely step away from the projects - or depending on how you're feeling you can jump in and help out with consulting etc.

    Might be the best of both worlds.

    Sorry to hear of your situation. That said I agree with Tom, in my opinion you not consider giving EVERYTHING of your much loved work away (even though you will have plenty of offers!).

    I'd scale down but keep some of the work under your own control, it will give you a sense of purpose that you may lose if you give up on everything immediately.

    There may come a time when you know yourself that you do need to stop, but take your own gut feeling into account, do you want to stop just now????

    Hi, Neil,

    I'm sorry to hear that you're under doctor's orders to close down the businesses.

    I think that a JV can be the most effective way for you to retain royalties. The JV partner can have a different than straight-monetary compensation deal, to have them put in the sweat equity, perhaps for an ultimate ownership interest down the line.

    This is a difficult decision. All the best to you.

    First of all, thank you for the concern and suggestions. Both are very much appreciated. Concerning the MS - I have the progressive type of MS and it has been slowly progressing for some 30 years now. It's not going to get better. I just adapt the best I can, and it *has* been challenging. But, that aside...

    Some of the things that have been said have started me thinking about the different interpretations of "work." This is probably a good opportunity to stop the "active" hands-on phases (ie: designing ebooks, webpages, covers, etc) and do more with the "passive" side of things - perhaps writing more ebooks and reports, creating some affiliate sites, etc.

    Maybe I'll actually get a chance to use some of the hundreds of WSO's I've bought over the years! LOL!!

    Thanks again for all the suggestions - if anyone has any more, I'd be happy to hear them!

      That sounds like a great plan!

      If your 'working' for your money currently then change it so your money works for you.

      Now you could go down the route of hiring someone part time or full time for about $40 to $90 a week and then they could do most of the work for you and you just transfer your knowledge over to them and they produce the results.

      Of course that does depend on your financial situation and i know most people with MS finance isn't always the greatest as it comes on unexpectedly and then everything changes.

      Deepest sympathy's and keep us informed as to how your getting on.

    you should have no problem selling your little empire, and I'm sure the money could help.

    Better yet, find someone who can co-manage the sites for you, and split the profits. That way you still have an ongoing profit stream.
