Does not having the .com extension as your domain name extension effect web traffic?

When I think of a website I generally think of .com as the extension however with a lot of niches keyword domains are already taken, such as hairloss.com or a similar niche.

Is it a good idea to use an alternate extension such as .net or .info if the domain your want with a .com is already taken? Will it impact the traffic to the website if I dont use a .com name?

Is it better to use an alternate extension to .com (hairloss.co if hairloss.com is taken) or is it better to purchase a .com domain and just modify the domain name (Example: yourhairlossdaily.com)?

    So do most other people.

Any other domain extension, including .co, could lose traffic trying to go to your site to the .com holder.

.com is easier to remember and seen as more professional to most people.

But this doesn't mean you can't grow a successful website and brand around a non .com extension. I've also seen non .com websites rank in the top spot for SEO as well.

I would recommend you think of a unique brand name if the .com you're looking for isn't available.

Try mashing up different words together, coming up with new ones, or using unique combinations. Just remember to keep it as short as possible, easy to remember, and relatively easy to spell.

Check out LeanDomainSearch for a tool that may help you come up with something.

    Good luck!

I think .com domain is most recognized as a "commercial" domain. The .net is a sort of backup for .com. From traffic perspective I do not think there is a difference.

It does NOT matter. What counts, is content.

Either can rank, but .com does have an advantage.

If the .com is taken, you have to consider the possibilities of there being a trademark infringement with another extension.

In my opinion .co extension is more acceptable than other small domain extensions like .tips, .info etc, if something completes your name then go for it though, for eg scoop.it . It s all bout content anyway.

imo, .net has really made a case to be included right next to .com as far as effectiveness and desirability. Probably never will be quite equal but still fairly close

  • Avoid overly obscure domains, as well as ".biz", because many people view them as sites that potentially host malware. As a result those people will refuse to even open the page to see what kind of content is being offered to them when they need it most.

The only difference is that it's not as "Brandable" and therefore not as memorable. To answer your question, it would be better to modify the .Com domain rather than choosing another extension.

    hey there

dont think of .com as a brand ...it is not
    .com >businesses
    .edu > education
    .gov > government
What matters is good content.. if you were to post the same good content on .com,.edu,.govt. websites you would get the same page views responses within 1 or 2 percentages because search engines do not discriminate ..
search engine require good only content to rank your site

If you're looking to develop type in traffic dot com is the
default for the internet. If you're looking to develop paid traffic
through the search engines, You Tube, Facebook, etc it doesn't
matter at all... they're just clicking a link.

Yes, It matters But not much because its universal extension mostly people only know about much about .com extension , but further if we think about this practically It does not matters because now days the age of domain matters much and DA and PA of domain matters.

Totally not true. Google doesn't care at all about the type of domain.

      They have said so repeatedly.

.com is the best. Only because when we think of searching for a site 99% of us think the domain name plus .com and virtually none of us assume it is anything different.

.com is the extension that most company personal websites use. People that have been with the internet while it was developing have that mindset to firstly think of .com websites. However a clever combination of two words that best describe your service or bussiness is also very good, since new generations of internet users think differently.
