What Was Your Biggest Mistake In Internet marketing?

Mine was list building.

I am no millionaire, but I do very well for myself online.

I know 2 millionaires, one of which is my coach. He does nothing more than generate 600-700 leads per day.

Now you maybe thinking that is impossible, but it is not. But that is the main crux of his business....LEADS, LEADS, LEADS....

when i realized I was not seeing good income, i looked at how many leasd I was generating in a month? the number made me sad...in a 30 day period I saw my FRESH leads list was about 7.....yes 7-8 leads per month.

No wonder my business was failing.

Fast forward to today, and like I said I am in the 6 figure club and doing a few hundred fresh, targeted leads per day. THings are good, but they were not good, till i realized the SECRET [if there really is a secret] to making money online, is waking up, hustling, put out content, and building as many LEADS, into your business funnel as you can humanly manage in a 24 hour period.

Once I worked this out, things changed, and my life chaged.

Leads BABY!!! :-)

Same for me.. I haven't started building a list for a really long time. That, and actually waking up and hustling every single day. But mostly lead generation, that's key to any business.

i failed really bad, until I learnt generated FRESH leads, and TARETED leads consistantly is key.

This is when I would say my breakthroughs came and I basically hit the jackpot, so to speak.

Now U do not have to do it every day, but you do have to be consistanst to wake up to sales in your inbox each day.

      You are right, yes.

comes down to testing each keywords, and I hear tons of so called marketesr saying "use 1000 keywords" worst avice ever.

use 2-3 keywords and group them. And test till your testicles hurt from sitting on them so long. LOL. this is the only way to do PPC, its real money so make use of it. More leads for less money and more targeted keywords can make you a forture fast. So that is key, but love your tips.

Mine was waiting until things were 'perfect'

Ha ha! I bet it does!

We are using Clickonomy for PPC traffic and then trying to grow using facebook and instagram. It's early days for us but, things are slow right now and based on what I know the only way to get 100s of leads is to pay 100s of dollars.

I've considered using forums but, do you not come across as spam?

bro if I were you, clickonomy, is awesome and ppc. Start there, do smaller test and upscale winners. If you are after quality leads that is an awesome place to start. I have used them before. and MLM leads.

instagram is going nuts for us, be patience with it, as INSTAGRAM is like facebook was, before facebook really exploded, so if you are after teh next big place, its instagram.....people are getting crazy results there, but you have to build, push content, and then post your links after. FB is sort of overrun, but Insta, is going crazy growth right now and where you might want to do some ads as well, we are testing stuff, and its getting better results than FB. IG all the way baby. Even gary Vee is saying get on there 34 hours a day, LOL [does that guy sleep. haha] and hustle. He has a knack for knowing viral explosive growth and i hear he is getting craze results too.

When in pure testing mode, which is most days, 10 of my tests, 8 fail. LOL. so get your two winners scale up and watch mumma back up the truck to store your new rolexes. LOL.

I am hammering Instagram at the moment building up followers. I have added over 100 in the last 24 hours. I post content daily, no sales at the moment.

We need to push again with PPC again and Clickonomy. I need to see the money spent on clicks as an investment and just take a hit in the bank balance. Need to get the list generated so that I can start sending them content and then make money back later with promotions.

              Haha. Bro. Thanks.

Just so you know I am not a millionaire, but That is my goal. I do own a 6 figure a year business, and its not really about the money but the acheivement, as I use to live my car many years ago. With nothing, so all the people who say they cannot do this, and crying do not know what struggling on noodles and living in your car is.

instagram and podcasting are the next big things, I mean HUGE. so get on there, and jump and be erotic on there, before everyone hit its. ..... By that I mean pump out great content, and help people. DM people and just help. Reach out on podcasts and offer value they will not get anywhere else. Its gunna be huge.

if you are not making sales, just be patient, it takes a while.

yes PPC are good, and clickonomy is good, test small and upscale bro, and you will be fine.

Also with solo ads, remember that they get on first, and will not buy straight away.

The way I make very handsome profits with solo ads, and very good is that i spent hours looking for good vendors. I do not give them away here, LOL....sorry....but what I can say is work with 4-5 of them, that have good leads, and leads who become buyers.

A lead from a solo ad, needs time, before they become a buyer. But, you have the idea bro. Hope I helped you.

I can keep saying it on here all day. THE MONEY IS IN THE LIST....yes. Its true, i have millionaire marketers doing none other than this, and earning huge incomes with just their list and affiliate marketing products. Working like 1 hour a day.

              Hope this helps.

I am in 4 niches, one of them IM.

But the majority of my income in non related niches.

stick to stock market, health, diet, relationship niches.

These are the best, as we all way more money, more sex, more health, living longer and want to look better for the other sex.

I also have contract work for a multinational company here in Australia and do all their inhouse and outhouse marketing. direct mail and also email marketing. Their lists are in the amount of 3million addresses. emails, but most of them do it all wrong. So I am paid a nice amount to do their mailing outs, and have rediculous results.

Oh, I'd bore you rigid if I talked about how I got started. But I will anyway, haha. Long story short: I'd been fooling around with web design. Non-monetized. Just for fun. I think it was a summer or a Christmas holiday (when I was a student) and I got a job at a hotel to bolster the ole CV (resume). I was working the reception desk. They mentioned needing a new website, so I offered to build it. That was the start. Soon after I got talking to a friend who told me about affiliate marketing. They had ads on their site, they showed me, that earned them a cent or more (I forget) for each click they received. Blew my mind. Folks click that stuff and you earn money? I thought to myself. I'm in! Well, soon after that, I fell in with the right group of people. For whatever reason they took me under their wing. These were people who would sometimes receive a car from a network as a gift for the traffic they'd sent. I think because I was different (and, I suppose, part of that was being British) and nice and polite and respectful, they took a liking to me. I learned more valuable things from them than anything I'd picked up at uni'. And the rest, as they say, is history. Well, sort of. Whenever someone says that (and the rest is history) it's never really as simple and clear cut as it sounds. For the sake of brevity, though, and keeping you awake - rest is history.

If you're new to IM, mate, or thereabouts, I can tell you about my second biggest mistake. Might help you out. I hope so.

Second biggest mistake in IM, then: failing to collect my audience. Which, on the surface, sounds bad enough, but life (and IM) is never as simple as black and white; there are layers of grey. In other words, if you forget to collect your audience you lose quite a few things:
            • Growth. You lose the power the audience has to give you a bigger audience (they can syndicate your media, for instance);
            • Earnings. You lose the power of earning money from them into the future (if someone takes action once on your offer, then why not multiple times?);
            • Ranking. You lose the power they afford you to rank your media (engagement on media - like videos or pages or images - is the biggest ranking factor in modern search engines)
You lose more than those 3, but those are the biggies.

To explain, let me give you 2 business models. (And it sounds like this may be similar to what Celente's coach does for a living. I'm not the coach. Just an educated guess.)

            Business Model 1.

Joe Marketer has a dating blog. He monetizes his blog posts with PPL dating offers. (PPL = Pay Per Lead. These are usually free join offers that pay you a commission between $1 and $8 or so.) He syndicates his blog posts around the socials. He even ranks a few for halfway decent long-tails in Google. His articles get around 10,000 uniques a day, sending 1,500 to his affiliate landing pages, earning him an EPC (earnings per click; in other words, the average amount of money he earns from a single click to the lander) of 20 cents. 1,500 X 0.20 = $300. So our mate Joe is doing okay. Three hundred bucks a day, or around $9,000 a month. But is he doing okay? Well, no, not really.

            Business Model 2.

Josephine Marketer has a squeeze-blog hybrid. In other words, her website amounts to this: squeeze page on the front, blog on the back. She gets traffic in just the same way as Joe (syndicating her articles) but she directs that traffic to her squeeze first. Instead of someone simply arriving on an article, seeing a contextual link, clicking it and winding up on a dating lander, the people arriving on Josephine's website take a different route:
            • They arrive on a squeeze page.
            • They double opt-in and arrive on a thank you page.
            • Then they arrive on the incentive/ freebie page.
On the freebie page (which is a pretty outdated term, but we'll use it) you have the thing that made each subscriber opt-in in the first place. Nowadays, it'll be a combination of eBooks and videos (probably). Now, unlike Joe, Josephine doesn't encourage each person to join 1 PPL offer, nope. She encourages them to join a handful. This is usually anywhere between 3 and a dozen. On average, instead of earning 20 cents per person, clever Josephine is earning 60 cents (they join 3 offers) and that's just on Day 1. She collects her audience. Meaning: she has all of the power that comes from a collected audience. Joe earns $9,000 a month. Josephine earns $27,000.

Question is, what if Josephine was not just clever, but really clever? What if she concentrated on passive traffic and paid VA's to update her hybrid?

Answer: she could have a lot of those businesses.

Basic stuff, mate, but you get the picture.

You don't have to use email marketing. (In fact, nowadays, you really need to be looking at additional types of audience collection; think about what people in 2017 like to join). But, however you collect 'em, make sure you do.

offer value, and video or something for free. To the value of $97.

Then yes, email and promote your stuff on the back end, through emails.

As with any niche, if you are not generating the LEAD first, you might as welll get a 9 to 5 job.

Leads, first.... then follow up with them. That niche is awesome for this type of marketing, and study other big guys in this niche that use EMAIL as their main form of advertising, / marketing.

Build up your leads or list of buyers too. Use that list first, to generate or double your monthly income. A buyers list is your no #1 asset,... i am sure you already have some of them.

yes a list is your best asset, but Ido not worry i had a list of 10k i messed up in the start from spamming affiliate links.

These days its about 75% content and value, and then spam them 25%. I find this mix is good. Yes you will get unsubscriber....but i care not....im a marketer and this is my dugout, we just give and help, and the universe will help and bring the rest.

    Prepare to be bored.

It was the '90s and I was 19 and living in London. My friend and I were walking to university and just shooting the sheet. The friend in question was a terribly clever chap who was telling me about domain name investments. I'd not long since received a fairly decent inheritance and he was suggesting I use some of it to buy domains. As he was talking, I was (sort of) listening and (no sort of about it) giving investment some serious consideration. Just not domain investment.

I had a strategy, you see. What you might call a pretty solid investment plan. This, roughly speaking, is what was going through my mind as my friend continued his erudite monoglogue: "Ruth is hot. I mean, you know, really hot. If she was a president, she'd be Babrham Lincoln. SHHHWIIING. Wait. I know. What if I go to Planet Hollywood, get one of those cool leather flight jackets, and then offer to take Ruth out on a date? Plan? Good one? No. GREAT ONE. Movie, food, alcohol, naughty stuff. Now that's an investment, good Sir."

Well, because I was such a useless git with the ladies, I never did ask Ruth out (got the flight jacket, though), despite her doing literally everything to tell me she wanted a date, including bringing her friends over to come see this curious young man she'd found on campus, and (far more painful) it was years upon years until I followed through and took my friend's advice about domains. It pains me to this day. Had I listened, I might have made millions off a few simple investments. Now that - is pain.

Moral of the story? Always listen to clever people, always ask out the Babraham Lincolns.

Always listen to clever people, always ask out the Babraham Lincolns.

      bro great post...thanks.

I laughed at tim ferris who said BITCOIN was crazy good. That was went bitcoin was at like $70.... i thought he was nuts.

Even emailed him and he replied personally, was not rude and very helpful.

Fast forward, he is making millions and was spot on....... and That was like $900,000 i lost, or potential from not listening to someone already successful. Silly me.

We all have those stories, but its key, if you listen to a smart person, take them seriously....and always be coachable. Tim Ferris, has has 1 or 2 bad calls, but his a milliaore for a reason.

Great post tom. thanks for you story.

This might sound silly, but it had a big impact. I am a freak for new WP themes, so I tend to change the themes every now and then. Little did I realize that the home page and stuff also gets thrown around which affects on-page SEO.

So it was like doing a Wp makeover only to get hit by a slump in rankings. Since then stuck to one theme, which helps to maintain the rankings and also preserve all the work done previously.

I recently discovered leads, and collected 20 leads a day with giving away a free e-book. But i do not understand how i should use the leads after I've collected them. How do you get customers interested? Should i send them a e-mail about a certain product?

no do not plug them, , keep adding value and helping them. Eventaully you will want to plug them or send an email with VALUE and tie that VALUE added email into an affiliate link, and or affilaite product.

      Huh?

What was the deal, to deliver LEADS only at the end of the month ???

What 'progress' were you expecting, 'fresh leads' in ONE PACK at the end of the month, is NOT viable measurable 'progress' even though there was a thousands it's doubtful method. Don't you think?

List building was a HUGE mistake for me too. Or lack thereof

Also, being in IM mainly for the money. For years I did dumb, fear-based stuff that killed my blog. I barely even had a business.

When I did list build and made it a prime focus and when I had more fun with my blog - and thought less about money - the money and success flowed my way.

I wished I'd learnt the list building skills years ago.
Now it seems these days everybody and their family are trying to build a list, 'trying' being the operative word.
From what I read, list building today doesn't appear to be newbie friendly (that's if it ever was) especially if he or she doesn't have any kind of prior knowledge.
What with copywriting, building squeeze pages, initially choosing a product to promote, setting up funnels, autoresponders, etc etc, you have to master many skills to do it correctly and patience.
Oh and lets not forget having a decent amount of green backs to start with and carry on with. I would say it would be great if you've got spare money to be coached having someone that can mentor you.
That's just my personal 2-cents worth as I'm sure all this would feel quite easy for some.

        Incorrect, I started with nothing.

        - FREE TRAFFIC,

        - Drive as much as you can humanly manage to your landing page.

        - HELP LIST, MAKE PROFIT

        - REINVEST YOUR MONEY to PAID TRAFFIC

Multimillionaire marketers are not doing free traffic, its PAID traffic where you scale up.

I went from $0 to $400 per day very fast doing this.

first I put 100% of my profits back into paid traffic, and ate noodles for months.

Then Fast forward, nowadays, I always put 30% of all my profits back into my paid traffic, that means, I will never run out of leads, and waking up to sales.

Start slowly and keep reinvesting. Once you figure out how powerful this email marketing thing is you will never look back.

Like I said, I have a friend who is doing $300,000 per month. Its way above me, but all he is doing is email marketing, there are no secrets, pure email marketing, and sending emails to that bigger list 5 times per week. [mon - friday 1 time per day]

do a search, but in laymens terms, is someone who is interested in your product, who should be on your email list. THey then become a lead, for life or until they subscribe.

I have over 300,000 leads, in 4 niches, but i treat them like I talking to my best and favourite cousin. Give value first, and then offer them stuff to buy. It works very well. That is my formula.

agreed, and even more powerful if you are getting high quality leads, meaning you get them from places where leads are already warmed up or looking for you offer, then you already win....no more 9 to 5 for you.

I feel silly too, I took years to get started, that is like leaving money on the table and walking away.....

But awesome work man. Love it.

If you are reading this, and thinking its a scam and you cannot make $1, just get in touch with me.

Its the EYE of RA, basically if you are having problems, its not the universe around you, there is a conversation you are having with yourself, that is not linking and conneting up.

I was broke, and always knew I would manage a 6 figure a year biz. Even with $8 in my bank, I never gave up and worked 20 hours per day, to get it going.

My conversation was, I have enough, and I am creating my empire.

The reason why people fail, and cannot ask girls out, is becuse of the conversation inside themselves. THey are not good enough, they cannot make money and negative all the time.

Once you cut that Bullchit out and belive you can do it, and talk to yourself daily and being grateful....it opens up your aura and you will see lots of cool stuff happen.

This is not law of attraction, its much greater. Its about YOU and YOUR conversations..... like the negative conversations are holding you back, and not putting chance and fate about finding the right people and tools...

Once you start imaging you have lots of money and not only see it as the future, but see it already have been happening, and you are in that state, and your goals and dreams already I N THE PAST..... then HUGE things happen....YES, I bet I just BLEW your MIND!!!

Please everyone read that last part of my post, its changed my clients incomes fast.

these days that is so TRUE< so loved what you added.

Push more content, and Push more Value, and then turn them into products.

I have made some handsome profits that way, but overtime I have done lots of affiliate offers too, so selling peoples products for over 50% commisions is the really cool way.

I learnt from a senior warrior in here, who was spending $2000 per day on traffic, but doing something like $6,0000 USD per day profit. With someone elses product.

When you see his funnel it would make anyone cringe. LOL. I am a pissy little ant compared to that warrior. LOL. Will not mention his name, because most well read warriors would already know. :-) lol

Mine was two-fold, which combined took me prisoner for too long...

    1) Not knowing what to do - i.e. too many things caught my attention and I was chasing every shiny thing that crossed my plate, and

    2) Not knowing how to write/sell

Eventually I caught up with first point and saw email list is the bottom line for almost 99% of IM success. Once I realized I need to focus on email list, the second one became a huge problem for me -- not knowing what and how to write to my list. So I let my first few list get cold solely from fear they would opt-out if I didn't give them something free all the time...

Oh boy how wrong I was...

Then -- I did NOTHING! Yes, months and years went by with nothing to show for my efforts -- until I got bitten by Settle and similar bugs... Then when I got home one Friday night, drunk from partying, I sat down, wrote a quick email and send it to my list.

Next morning, when I saw what I wrote AND sent... I started panicking...

Until I started getting email replies -- both positive and negative. Then I knew I was onto something... (although it took me few more "such" Friday nights, but eventually I got to the point where I can write profitable...

So yeah, bottom line from my story is a) keep building lists and b) learn how to sell -- regardless of the medium... (personally I like Halbert and other "old fart" stuff, but that's just me...)

Mine is falling prey to the shiny object syndrome. I get distracted by new methods that promise fast results. The real way to success is picking a strategy and working it consistently. And as others have said, by hustling.

i think I already posted, but forgot to add...

    NOT building a LIST faster.

This is key if you want to do well online. Have an audience to sell too.

If you do not have an audience, there are ways to rent others....which I will touch on later.
