Only 50% of people who opt-in to my list are actually confirming their subscriptions

Thanks in advance for any help!

I have an opt-in page converting great around 35-40%, but only half of the people who opt-in are actually confirming their subscriptions. Is this normal??

    On the page that tells people to confirm their subscription are you telling them to check their spam folder for the confirmation email in case it ends up their

    It is normal. These subscribers are not serious to do business in the long terms, they either want to check or instant download for giveaway freebies.

    So, if they did not confirm the subscription, let them be. This should reduce the useless list of which might pile-up your email contact list resulted you have to pay an expensive monthly fee to the email marketing company.

      Yeah there has been debate going on about this for years.Should I have confirmed optin or not.

      And tests have been done showing that with single Optin , Marketers make much more money in the long run.

        There really isn't a debate. Everyone that will double optin will single optin. So, with single optin you have everybody that would have opted in PLUS the other 50% (in this example that didn't).

        How valuable the other 50% is may be questioned, but if it is greater than 0, then it's better. At worst single optin is the same.

        Get them on the list, then remove inactives some time down the road, whether they would have been double or only single optins.

          It's not that simple and odds are it won't matter.

          People don't confirm for multiple reasons.
          • Sent to junk folder.
          • Rarely use email.
          • Buried in email.
          • Don't care after a few minutes.
          • Bot subscribers.
          • Died.
          • Bored with niche.
          • Window shopper.
          • etc...

            It is that simple. Every one of your reasons can also apply to people that did confirm their optin. Get them on your list, then instead of guessing and making up reasons, see which are active and which aren't. Simple.

            That depends on how much profit you make on the sale compared to the extra cost associated with your auto responder.

    As has been said, switch to unconfirmed opt-in. Otherwise, all you're doing is losing potential customers.

    There'll be better (and more accurate) ways down the line to filter your prospects once you've got them on your list.

        Yes. For a start, I wouldn't necessarily assume they're all unwilling - many will simply neglect to check their inbox or put it off until later. Secondly, when you say "worth it", what extra work are you risking? You've already done the hard bit in getting them to type in their email from scratch.

        And really, what's the downside? If the argument is that confirmed opt-ins are more likely to be serious buyers (not something I've found to be true, by the way), then you'll have all those on your list anyway. Plus you'll be getting, by your figures, at least the same number again of unconfirmed subscribers.

        Further along, you'll be able to prune your list of subscribers by their actual responsiveness or any other criteria you want.

          What are the risks of unconfirmed opt-ins? I'm reading a few things about people with malicious intent and spammers, etc. How could someone be malicious on an email list?

        You don't know why they didn't confirm and you can't definitely say that they aren't really interested because of it.

        I would rather get 100% of the subscriptions and later prune the unresponsive users, instead of assuming that those that don't confirm wouldn't have been worth keeping.

    I would use single opt-in.

    You can always prune any users that aren't responsive.

    Whatever you are giving away as the incentive to opt-in. Make it clear that access to it will be emailed to them. That way users won't be inclined to use a fake email address just to get the giveaway.

    That's why nowadays there are a lot of affiliate marketers buying aweber single opt-in.

    You got a half of those opt-in confirm? That's really high percentage my friend,

    I was even got lower that that. That's why i had to change it into single opt-in now.

    Honestly...use single optin In some markets that number can be as high as 90%. Its a complete waste of leads to use double opt in. Sure you get some phony email addresses, but they will bounce and can be removed from your list

    I stopped using double optin YEARS AGO! Stop that and ONLY use single optin. You'll keep all your subscribers... and you'll make more money.

    With double optin, the confirmation email gets lost in the spam folder all the time. Or people just forget to do it. Or... they might not know they HAVE to confirm.

    Avoid all that and just go single optin.
