Why is picking a domain name so hard

Hello,

I am making a site where you can sell your car online for free. I am trying to find a domain name for it, but it seems impossible. Everything I come up with is already taken. I'm sure you guys have had the same problem.

Can anyone help me with a domain name that would fit the description of my site.

Thanks.

For that type of niche, if you're having problems finding a keyword rich domain, you may want to consider going for branding instead.

Think of a short, easy to remember name that people would be able to remember if a friend of theirs needed to sell a car online.

Otherwise, be prepared to spend some money on a better domain that conveys the type of meaning or keywords that you are lookin' for.

Also use ajaxwhois.com to help you quickly figure out a good domain and to see if it's taken or not.

Yea, alot of the domains with keyword rich domains are taken like most niches. Are you talking about coming up with a "Web 2.0" domain name?

When I am stumped, (ok, often) I use this service.

Thinkmap Visual Thesaurus - An online thesaurus and dictionary of over 145,000 words that you explore using an interactive map.

Sounds simple, but it works well in feeding you with synonyms and expansive name concepts that you could only dream of coming up with on your own, at least with any kind of efficiency.

When creating domain names these days, you need to look for at least TWO words that work together well, or can be fused. Take your core concept and split it into two basic descriptive words and plug them into the wheel. When you see one you like, add it to a text-pad, and/or dig deeper by clicking on it.

The service was too good to pass up at like $19 for the year, now I use it all the time, for keyword research, domain names, and articles.

it may be taken but it does have a price and it might be worth checking it out at whois and contacting the owner. The better its keyword the better its search.

plus pm the available names to him and not post or someone else will take them.

Yes, I can relate. Sometimes it has kept me up at nights just wondering if I got the Domain Name right. And then wrestling back and forth whether there could be another one better.

It can drive you crazy. But realize in the end things will work out and in a few months from now you will be able to laugh about this stressful time !!

Not as hard as you might think if you dig deep into the warrior archives and read through the endless golden nuggets on misc. topics...

All kinds of available domain names! Just requires some innovative thinking and creative brainstorming...

    This works for me.

Go to the Google Adwords keyword too. Generate a list of the keyword phrases that you want to target with your site.

Take this list and paste it into Godaddy's bulk domain finder. You might find some unexpected gems are available this way.

Tell me about it... I'm going through the same thing in the guitar niche. I've literally looked at over 100 names and I can't BELIEVE the ones that are taken!

Doesn't help when your business partner has wildly different ideas about naming the product... LOL.

      Hi Max

Perhaps you should consider not going for the one, ideal domain.

I suspect that the market for used cars is fairly localized; i.e. buyers may not be inclined to travel too far in search of their car (unless it's a specialist marque).

So, what about a number of local sites e.g. CarsalesKnoxville.com, CarsalesNashville.com etc

You'll be spending more on domain names, but a reseller hosting package should be enough to get you started and you'll stand a better chance of grabbing your chosen domain(s).

Plus, they'll be pinpoint targeted for the relevant keywords.

      Just a thought.

Domain names should be easy to remember that is why it is very difficult to get one that is available. The hardest part is the kind of niche is very common so it is indeed a challenging task.

    Agree with above post.

If you don't use them already, try:
bustaname / com - a simple and fantastic tool
estibot / com - the long tail keyword research can uncover some gems
nametumbler - if I'm really stuck and just want to find some inspiration

I lost a few domain names to suspected front running activities some time ago and have steered away from using any major company domain name look up tool. This gets a little hard in the case of 10's and 100's at a time, in which case I will use the Godaddy bulk tool - sparingly. Most of the research can be conducted away from any potentially prying eyes (yes, call me paranoid - and yes it probably doesn't happen as much anymore, if it at all - but old habits die hard).

    Good luck.

    Hello there,

I 100% know how you feel, it is such an irritating and mad feeling when everything is taken - I get so frustrated

I am also looking for a new domain for a blog and I am glad that I read this thread. The suggestion to use this site Ajax Whois 2.0 - fast domain name search and whois for immediate domain checking is great, thanks.

What I did was check for keywords related to my site and then put those words into the Thesaurus here Thesaurus.com | Find Synonyms and Antonyms of Words at Thesaurus.com

I was able to find a decent name, I suggest you try it out

well allot of companies buy bulk and number of domains for them, they only reserve these domains and try to take profit in number of ways. domain parking, selling at higher rates etc
the best way to find domain is to use different combinations of words like I would recommend you and hopefully it is available for you
    "shopacar.com"
good luck , but do host your site with me ok
