Medical Tourism Markets?

From time to time I've lived in other countries and have become familiar with their health care. I would like to create a blog to help match up health care providers with potential customers in the US, but I'm not sure how to monetize the idea.

I know that in the US sometimes dentists or other professionals will offer a "referral prize" if you send a friend of yours, and I think that something like that would be useful. For instance, my website could have a "coupon" that the user prints out, and I would have an arrangement with the provider to compensate me for such referrals.

One problem that I see with this promotion is that a lot of medical professionals would probably not like to get involved in such a scheme, so I'm not sure how to verify a referral, and in less developed countries the providers aren't used to internet advertising of any kind so it might be hard to just sell ads.

Does anybody know any online resources, free or paid, that might address this kind of business model?

Thanks,

Jay

Not sure if this will help at all, but there's a section in the site which addresses business partnerships, you might be able to find out how they structure their partnerships...might be kinda hard for an individual to get involved in something like this...are you kinda thinking of a broker between patients and medical providers type deal?

Yes I was thinking of exactly that, but I do think it would be pretty hard. Perhaps the best way is to have a review blog, and just count on google adsense revenue from health care institutions that wanted to advertise.

Medical tourism is big and bound to get bigger as boomers retire and have more time to travel and more need for medical services.

I'd go straight to an authority site/blog. Build a readership, runs ads with someone like escape artist and once you have the traffic, you can sell ad space to the health providers.

The problem with matching health professionals with consumers is that some will want a code of ethics, and others will want an exclusive on certain regions, etc. If you're just selling ad space, you remove all of those barriers and headaches.

I can't really offer any input here, but as a ghostwriter, I've done a few articles in this field but they've all been related to dentists in the US. On the other hand, I would say there's bound to be a way because it's a booming industry. I'm retired in Thailand with my family and it's amazing to see just how many people come here specifically for medical reasons, largely because of the low costs.

Hi, I know this business model very well. I propose something, why don't we develop a joint venture to start up a medical tourism blog.

If the blog gets good trafic, then we can monetize it by selling leads to medical tourism facilitator and providors (I have those contacts).

          Dear Jay,

I am dealing with medical tourism information portal so you are welcome to check out the International Medical Tourism Center or simply imedicaltourismcenter. We've got some tips on the entire process as well as a bunch of other useful information on clinics, types of treatment, tourist sights, etc.

          Enjoy

Having been a person who has searched for some info on flying out of the US, I'd like to add a point of view for you. First, please don't create a site that offers a review of some services. That's not what I'm looking for. Look if I am flying out of my home country, to some place I've never been to have a dr open me up and do something inside of me. Do you think, I trust any review type page? Do I trust any company that shows some photos of hospitals and a hotel room?

    HECK NO!

I've seen a TON of just throw em up fast, keyword em optimize em blogs/pages/etc for medical tourism. I click on them, give it a 2 second glance and then BAM. I'm outta there. Big difference between the MMO way of thinking.

      I wouldn't think so, no.

But in most of the Eastern European countries routinely offering "medical tourism" (of which there are many), the medical/surgical staff providing the services have either qualified as doctors or done their postgrad training either in the UK or in the US (or occasionally in Scandinavia), and are either "board certified in surgery" (US) or "Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons" (London), and the sites acting as commission-based referral services are typically trading heavily on their doctors' impeccable-looking qualifications, backgrounds and credentials.

That issue does seem largely to be "well addressed" by the market.

I can assure you that the medical tourism market continues to expand.

With the Obama bills not exactly delivering what Americans were expecting, to Canadians growing tired of the inefficiency of their "free" system, medical tourism is growing exponentially.

The same goes double for cosmetic surgery, which has been on the rise given the present economic situation.

    Not sure how to monetize?

Wow. Man I can't remember where I saw this but I recently ran across some affiliate programs from some of these hospitals in places like Thailand who want more patients for medical tourism. Maybe google "medical tourism affiliate programs" or something like that. Sorry I can't remember exactly where I saw this, seems like it may have been some free report summarizing high payout affiliate programs. I will have to check my hard drive.

I know there have been at least 2 WSOs giving lists of high paying affiliate programs but that wasn't it, I'm almost positive it was a free report I saw somewhere.

But these medical tourism hospitals are paying huge bucks via affiliate programs, no joke! I'm talking hundreds of dollars for one lead.

edit: Also you may want to check places like Peerfly or ShareaSale affiliate programs for something like this. Anywhere where you can find a large list of affiliate programs.

Thailand is massive for medical tourism and they offer all sorts of Plastic surgery for peanuts compared to the US for example a Boob job is 60,000 baht which is about $2,000 US and that is at the best place in Bangkok and the work is excellent from what i have seen.

Most of the people I see doing it here offer a complete Vacation Medical package including hotel etc everything from meet and greet at the Airport to hotel limo to the hospital and then a weeks R&R at one of the beach resorts.

People tend to like that as they go on holiday for 2 weeks and come back with lots of extra goodies and they have spent less than at home but with a nice holiday thrown in.

Never really thought about looking into it but like you say could be a great opportunity since I am right here, next time I am in Bangkok might have to take a look.

    Jayveen,

Even though your post was published in 2009, it would be nice to know how your story went. Did you manage to bridge the US patients with overseas clinics or create a medical travel blog?
