Turn Your PC Into a Mac

I saw this today on another forum I am a member of and thought I'd share it with the community.

Mac has had the ability to partition the hard drive and set up a windows boot. Now Windows has the same ability. Read the article and view the video here.

I have a much simpler method.

    Step 1 Open trash can
    Step 2 Insert PC
Step 3 Open door to Apple store
    Step 4 Purchase Mac
    Step 5 Smile
    Step 6 Think Different

perfect, yes that is the ticket...

I dont know how many PCs that I have purchased over the years, I have had my current MAC for four years, and to date never a crash nor a problem of any sort at all.

I have seen the hackintosh thing but to be honest, it is not the way.

While it may look like a MAC it will not act like a MAC.

Universal programs will not work in the correct way on a converted PC, there is a reason for this, MAC is part hardware part software that is what makes the magic happen.

while you can hack a PC to look like a mac you cannot really get the true MAC experience.

So I recommend the steps above...

      Good post.

When I first switched to a Mac I thought I might miss my pc.

So I taped a fork to the monitor and jam my eye into it every 37 minutes.

Ah, just like running Windows again!

Oh, yes, that is so true, I have so many applications that are only for MAC, but to be honest, I have yet to find one single task that I could not do on a MAC, including using XLS files, with open office.

My mother in Law used to call me every other day with a problem with her windows computer, some driver did not load, blue screen, had to reboot and reboot, printer stopped working had to reboot.

Finally I talked her into buying a MAC, cost, $1200.00

This replaced her, Toshiba laptop, which new was $2,500.00 and had have three hard drives replaced, memory problems, and a host of other issues.

She paid half as much for the MAC but that is not the real story here.

I have not had one phone call from her with a problem to fix on the MAC.

That my friends is not just Magic, that is Bliss....

I use both. I keep them separate. I would insult my Mac by putting OSX on a PC. My Mac treats me a lot better then my PC. No crashing. No viruses. No headaches.

I must be unique but there are many reasons I need a PC in my business that a mac can't take care of...

However, I now have an iMac sitting right here to the left of me... for the very few MAC only applications that I want to run.

Though I am typing this on my PC right now all I have to do is tap one button to the right of me and this same screen I am typing into my PC on will display OS X Leapord. I use a KVM switch for this.

My imac cost me $550 off craigs list... exactly half of the retail price locally.

To even get close to the power I have on my custom built quad core PC with top of the line everything I'd have to spend around $3500-$4500 on a mac pro... my pc cost half that.

Now if mac pro could run paralells and windows like the intel based macs do then the investment would make sense.

I looked into running a mac emulator on a PC... it sounds like a fun thing to try... it just looked to crazy and complicated so I went the simple one button click route that allows me to use the same monitor, keyboard, and mouse and run mac os on mac and windows os on a pc. Much simpler... I just had to plug in a couple cords :-)

If someone is serious about Mac and still wants windows though... I would recommend buying one of the intel core macs and installing paralells and xp. Its cool how you can drag and drop files between the two operating systems that way.

It's a larger savings than you think.

            I have a Dell Quad Core q6600 2.39ghz, 4gb ram and 500gb SATA hdd. I paid $600.

The near same specs (2.8 vs 2.3) at the Mac store is $2,849.00. Even if you allow a $500 difference on the processor speed, you're still coming out saving $1749.00

Ridiculous. I know when I'm being gouged.

Whether you own a PC, MAC or both and are comfortable and productive using it, then you've made a great choice for yourself.

We can argue day and night about the pros and cons about both system's hardware and OS Platforms, but at their core, they essentially do the same thing - they're computers. Good, bad or indifferent, the inherent value in a computer is directly related to how well you use it and what you get out of it.

On the other hand, the real point of discussion should be what percentage of your target market use either (along with Linux). For developers, it's a numbers game - 99% of our visitors (for which data is available) use some version of Windows.

Hence, we develop for the Windows user market which is significantly larger worldwide. And because of this we use PC's and always upgrade to the newest OS to ensure we support it.

Back to a personal level, there is nothing wrong with either system for the end user. Most problems arise (and are seemingly more prolific) on PC's because of the wider user base and generally poor technical skills/knowledge at the user level.

So once again, use what works best for you it doesn't necessarily follow though that your choice is the right choice for everyone.
Now that makes sense. Oh how I get so tired of the endless Windows/Mac/Linux arguments.....

The Mac has been out for 24 years, just 3 years less than the PC. Why does it still have less than 10% market share in what is essentially a two-way race?

Is it bad marketing or an inferior product?

Bill was better at marketing than Steve.

All the techno-babble doesn't replace the reality that my experience with a Mac has been many many times more trouble-free than my experience with Windoze.

Double quad blahbedyblah whatever... when I use my Mac... I USE my Mac.

When I used Windoze ... I spent a lot of time repairing, diagnosing, waiting for tech support ... cursing the blue screen of death ... paying for upgrades ... hoping the upgrades didn't wipe out my files ... reading instruction manuals .... downloading new drivers.... uninstalling those drivers because they weren't compatible ... installing even more new drivers ... wondering why the new driver had conflicts with the other driver from something else .... AAAAAAGH!

When I bought my Mac... I just started using it. And years later, I'm still using it. My friends keep calling me to ask what to do with the latest error they just got on their windoze box.

I'll close with this. There was an article in a magazine recently that was essentially a "Top 10 Things Your Computer Tech Won't Tell You".

      One of them was:

"If you want to see less of us, get a Mac. That's what we use."

      It was not an ad.
It was not a Mac magazine.

Nope, as long as you buy the proprietary parts (such as the MAC boot roms) from apple, you're totally legal.

Emulators, INC and others have been doing it that way for a loooong time. And Apple can't do anything about it.

Actually, the 68000 was a nice processor before the 8088 even came into being!

      8086(16+4)-- 1978
      68000(24-32)--1979(used in Apple MAC 1984 16MB-4GB)
      8088(16+4)-- 1979(used in PC in 1980 64KB(banked memory up to 1MB))

Frankly, I always thought IBM made a mistake there. The 80x86 didn't catch up to reason until the 80386!

And mac vs. windows was NOT a 2 way race until a few years back, and, OFFICIALLY, it STILL isn't! WHY!?!?!? Because, OFFICIALLY, the MAC is a platform, and windows is an O/S!

So comparing the two is silly.

The IBM computer started out as a bit of a joke. It was HIGH PRICED, a LATE COMER, and had NO compatibility with other systems! So WHY did it take off? It was made for business, and from IBM! Other companies, that made "IBM compatibles", were RISKY, and nobody trusted them. The ONLY reason they sold was because they cost less than HALF what the IBM systems cost. Eventually, word got out that, if Ashton Tate, and flight simulator ran, the system was probably compatible.

The apple computers started out costing a LOT! They even cost more than the IBM systems. Competitors were SQUASHED! IBM could only copyright a few bytes in the ROM, but Apple could even PATENT parts of their system. Of course, NOW they aren't so able to do so.

For all the MAC lovers or the Windows haters....If you want something truly stable and truly open source you use Linux 8)

Apple is no better then Microsoft...they steal from the open source community add it to their OS and then lock the source down for parts of their OS.

Also I never understood how a windows machine became referred to as a PC...They are both personal computers...Unless they are workstations, or a server, or a terminal hehe...

Every computer in your home be it MAC or Windows based would be a PC...

The name goes back to the original IBM PC, which came out years before Windows existed. Everything similar was called a PC or PC clone.

The Mac zealots would probably be upset if you referred to their computer as a PC.

      Bad definition.

A Mac is a Mac, made by Apple. A PC is basically any computer running Windows, of which there are dozens (probably hundreds, maybe thousands) of companies making them.

It's apples (har har) to oranges. Apple was essentially a hardware maker for ages, whereas Microsoft was software, so no surprise that an operating system for one particular make of computer is less popular than one that is in virtually everything else.

Had Apple been in the software business as their primary focus, it might be different. But Gates and company made some extremely smart and, in my opinion, morally and ethically questionable, moves that got them in at the beginning.

Apple is pretty much infinitely superior in their marketing savy, but Microsoft is so entrenched that their skill isn't anywhere near enough to cross the moat and scale the wall.

But man, I can't stand Macs. As a relative dimwit when it comes to actually using computers, Mac appears to be bound and determined to make simple tasks more difficult. One button on a mouse my ass.

I dunno, I was using a 2007 made Mac laptop this weekend and it had just one button. And while I certain could buy a mouse with two buttons, there's no real reason for me to do so.

Which is minor point*, to be sure, but my PC does exactly what I want it to, so the minor inconveniences of using a Mac (which, certainly, most Mac users presumably don't give a rat's behind about) are more than enough reason to not use it.

*Sort of. I do an awful lot of stuff that involves the two buttons (or whatever you'd like to call them) so not having them is actually a pretty big problem.

You don't need two buttons on a MacBook, you put two fingers on the touchpad and click the one button, and voila! You have a "right click"... Much neater than having several buttons and scroll devices!

Oh yeah. I don't generally notice how dependent I am on that right click until I don't have it. But between my writing habits and my browsing habits when researching on the net, trying to go without it is a little like trying to write with my left hand. I can do it, but it's frustrating.

The IBM pc got clonned, so many more people made them, driving down prices. (this also pushed the tech for them to the bleeding edge, and it's why PC's are faster as well)

Apples are made only by them, and cost a lot more.

Which one do you think the average consumer is going to buy?

Check your XP system for monitor color calibration and see how much control you have. Not much.

Getting the mouse pointer to NOT suddenly jump an inch while allinging a rasterd object was close to impossible. This has improved over the last 6 or so years, but in 2004 and earlier, it was a painful experience for those who were used to working on macs.

To this day, when you create design work and you want to match that of printed material, it's close to impossible to do this on a PC. Even with market specific monitors, (the blue ones with the glare hoods) where in 2003, you'd pay about 2 grand for a 21".

I just bought Paralells because I need to be able to create accurate design work for PC users.

FOR MAC USERS THAT CREATE DOCUMENTS FOR WINDOWS USERS:

The problem here, is that when I create folders on a Mac, Windows users don't see the same thing after they open the zip file.

This is a fault with the Mac OS I don't like. The Mac OS adds invisible files to folders so the system can easily find files, and determine what color lable these files and folders should have.

When a Windows user opens them up, they see your original documents, PLUS files like .DSstore, Xfolder, etc. This confuses the heck out of some customers.

DStore Cleaner or Blue Harvest will clean this up, but I'm not sure about the invisible folders. I've got Paralells, but don't have XP yet, and a full version is required.

But what do I know? I'm just an ignorant Mac Freak!

I can remember when Apple came out with the Lisa computer followed by the Mac. I thought that was a pretty cool computer, however...

Apple would not sell parts so I could build my own. Boo Hoo. That is how I wound up on Windows machines.

Now, please don't tell anyone what I am about to say...do keep it a secret...especially from my employees (they love Mac) - I've been taking a Dreamweaver course at the local commuity college. It is being taught on Mac.

OMG - I'm developing Mac envy.

    AAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrggggghhhhhhhhhhhh! Hold me back.

I actually just turned my Dell Laptop into a Mac using OSX 86. I saw a tutorial on the OSX 86 website and on YouTube. It was a pretty easy process and now I have a slick powerful MacTop.

I only just got my new Mac Pro and run Max OSX, Windows and Fedora side by side with easy Drag n Drop between each os (VMWare Fusion at work there) and BootCamp'd Windows for when I want to unlease the NVidia card on some games when I want to relax and blow stuff up.

It took my wife over 5 years to convince me to make this move, and so far I have 0 regrets and 0 blue screens of death... so, so far, I am a happy MacHead.

You make a good point about the Windows in a Mac. There is some speed degradation in doing that but it is great for those who have windows programs you just cannot do without and are not available on the Mac.

I was comparing quad core PC's and Macs side by side and the proce difference was not that bad. I actually used to have Linux and Mac OSX running in VMWare on my PC until it took a final crash (fried motherboard and processor).

The main reason I made the swap was not to join the "Mac Social Movement" as I often joke about to my "Mac Lover" wife its more a practical reason that I can run everything in one seamless environment (I have to do a lot of Linux stuff for clients).

My wife is graphics artist and part of our business is graphics design (Publishing Client Magazines, Promotional Materials, Physical Books, Websites) and has been a mac head for over 20 years and after she has seen me battle with retarded Windows issues time and again she finally convinced me to take the plunge.

I love PC's and M$ software! Combined, they have fed my family for several years now.

I used to be a Desktop Support Technician. If M$ put out a product that worked well, then we'd be out of business.

OK That just scared the hell outta me.....

Mac users like having a one-button mouse.

They reserve the other finger for windows users who tell them they should be using a PC...

      : )
That was the one thing I could not bear wth the Mac, I had to get a new 7 button mouse for all my shortcuts and macros, my wife still used the Hockey Puck mouse and hates the MightyMouse with its scroll button, talk about old school!

Couldn't care less. Macs are crap. My friend is always coming over to my place to run stuff on my PC that he can't on his Mac. Plus, every Mac I've ever used has felt incredibly slow compared to a PC with similar specs. I've used Macs at school and work, so yes, I am one of those people that have actually used both on a regular basis and think that Macs suck.

And for those people that think that Macs are perfect and PCs are full of problems, I have yet to have a single problem with my HP laptop (going on 3 years), and my Toshiba before this only had issues because of a crappy fan.

And if Macs are so perfect, why does this website exist: Mac OS X and iPod Troubleshooting, Support, and Help - MacFixIt

I buy and sell used computers. I just got a load (about 35) of imacs, all in one G3 computers. 500 MHz
I sold one and the customer wants to return it because it is so slow on the internet using IE 5. They virtually can't download anything. It is so slow using a high speed cable connection.

I took one here in the office and duplicated their results. I tried both IE and Netscape and both were slow loading and both crashed the computer to the point my only option was to shut of the power strip. I am on a DSL connection.

Any suggestions on faster downloading? Any suggestions on how to make my customer happy with a Mac instead of giving a full refund?

FUNNY story: I also have about 70 old all in one Mac SE, Classic etc computers that I am gutting for the hard drives (I have a customer for SCSI hard drives -- no customers for old Macs) Inside some of these old Mac computer are IBM hard drives with the Apple logo on them.

      No, it doesn't help.
I am running PCs that are 5 years old (bought new 2003) and they download as quickly as ever. All are hooked up to the same DSL router/hub.
I still need to figure our why these iMacs are so slow. I am about to lose $85 and a customer and potential referals due to this slowness. I hate giving refunds for things that work, but not adequately

    For me its simple...

If you need a MAC get a MAC otherwise a Windows PC is enough or get both or go buy that poor kid across the street one of his own.

But converting one into the other is not efficient in my opinion.

Now I am only waiting on a Gigabyte mother board which should arrive from new egg tomorrow and I will turn my PC in to a PC/Mac Pro

I already had a compatible video card and compatible quad core2 intel chip set.

Will let you know when I get it all hooked up and running.

I have a much simpler method.

    Step 1 Open trash can
    Step 2 Insert PC
Step 3 Open door to Apple store
    Step 4 Purchase Mac
    Step 5 Smile
    Step 6 Think Different

    Thomas
    Exactly ...

Developers have been tinking with a solution for windows to run mac for years.. The software was always slow and sloppy though.
