Having taken advice from this forum I've added a blog to my language learning site. But I'm not sure of some of the basics.
1. How often do you blog?
2. Is it the same as a newsletter?
3. How long should it be?

If anyone could take a look I'd be grateful. I know the language is quite clunky, but I'm sure I'll improve that side. Feedback on content, length, and position on site would be much appreciated. Tips and Your Stories – Learn Spanish Fast and Easy

Thanks

How often you post is up to you but consistency is important. You can always start with once a week and then change to more if needed.

Blog posts are usually shorter than a newsletter.

The length depends on your topic. Post can be anywhere from 300 words to 10,000. Though for long posts you might consider doing a series.

Your article is rather hard to read (at least for my old eyes) because the print is small and you don't use many breaks. When reading online shorter paragraphs are better even though High School English teachers might not agree.

Very useful advice, thanks - I've noticed other blogs have much larger print with wider line spacing, so I've changed it accordingly.

All depends on your energy. I'd suggest one, 1500 word post weekly but really, success is had in following your fun, solving 1 specific problem for readers through each post, building your network through guest posting and blog commenting, and in persisting.

    Another tip...

Use a 'mobile' friendly theme. You can get one for free by searching your theme plugin...add new theme.

    Also...

Do a search o Google for"Mobile Friendly Theme Checker".

Google has one that is free to use.

A lot of blogs are being read on mobile phones so you don't want to miss out on all that traffic.

You can add Jetpack plugin. It also good for mobile, and more other function just in one plugin.

For length, shoot for 1500 to 2000 words. You're better off with one really good post a week than posting more often with lower quality content.

Try to keep your paragraphs to 3-5 lines to make it easier for your readers. Also, instead of using "Learning Tip" as your header, say what the tip is "Listening Practice For Faster Results" or something like that.

I love that specific advice, it's the sort of thing that makes a real difference - many thanks for looking and taking the time.

Definitely note this advice; your blog was a bit tough for me to read on my Chromebook. I suspect difficult to read on mobile too. Short, sweet paragraphs, a clean, scannable layout and an overall pleasing theme are what you should aim for.

    Great question, Amut!

First of all, if you are going to do blogging for any business purpose, try to have a long-term goal in mind.

Blogging can be a lonely and discouraging endeavor. However, it is a great way to help people and provide content that they can use.

The reason why you need a long term goal is so you can build an audience and a following. I don't care what anyone on here tells you, building an audience takes time...Sometimes years.

So, blog with a long view rather than a short one.

    Blogging Frequency

I write every day. Having said that, I try to knock out at least 500 words a day.

I don't post every day. Once my post reaches about 1500 to 2000 words, I then finish up and post it as a complete post.

Because I write 500 words a day, I can then have a complete post done in 2 to three days. If you do this consistently, you should be well on your way.

Research has shown that over 70% of the blogs online have not been updated in over a year. So if you are blogging regularly, you'll have some success.

    Wait! There's More!

However, writing a decent post is only half of the work.

You will need to add pictures, link to relevant pages in your blog, and link to other sites that can help your content. You will also need to add sign up information for your email list and optimize your pages and posts for SEO.

Don't worry, there are some great plugins for this if you are using WordPress. The plugins are great because they are easy to use and install.

You Need to Promote in Order to Win

Other than the actual writing and posting issues themselves, you will need to promote the tar out of your blog.

Here are some ideas of how you can do this:

Use social media. Get a Google Plus account and post brief introductions to your post that link to your post on your site. One easy way to do that is to use communities and let people know about your posts.

Don't think that you'll be able to just post links to your posts on Googlle+ because that alone will not work. You need to participate in conversations on there and comment and read others posts as well.

You will get traffic if you do that.

A good reason to lurk on G+ is that you can also find "influencers" on there. Influencers are people that are linking to excellent blog posts that they wrote. These people are the one's you need to make friends with so that you can leave comments on their posts.

You want them and their minions to follow you, so the best way to do that is to comment on their blogs too. I'm not talking about "Hey, nice post" types of comments, but relevant comments about the posts. Not only that, but if you can actually add value to the post, you will be remembered considerably, which is what you want, because you will now do...

    2. Guest Posting

Only a mere 6% of the bloggers out there do this but it is a very successful way to get get loads of traffic. Guest posting is asking a blog owner if you can write a post for his site.

    Why would you do this?

    1. You'll get some of their traffic.
    2. You'll be seen an an authority.
    3. You will also get link juice to help your rankings.

On number 3 above, you will want to make sure the blogs you are pitching to will allow you to post a short bio with a link to your site. That way you will have a relevant blog linking to yours. (Very valuable!)

    3. Repurpose your content.

If you plan out your content over a year or several months, you can easily take those posts and convert them into an eBook. You can use that book to give out to people that sign up on your site.

Tip: Put it up for sale on Amazon. That way when you give it out to people it has some value added to it.

You can take some of your longer, better posts that have great graphics in them and convert them into .pdf files and give them away as free reports on social media sites like LinkedIn and FaceBook.

Another Tip: On LinkedIn there's an alert that pops up telling you to say "Happy Birthday" or "Happy Promotion"to people you know on there. Here's what I tell them:

"Happy Birthday! In celebration of your most wonderful day, I'd like to give you a free gift! I've written a 300+ page eBook that I've been selling on Amazon on how to blog.

I'd like to give it to you as a birthday gift for free, I'll just need your email address to send it to you. (LinkedIn will not allow me to send it through their messaging system, because the eBook is too large.

I'd also like to put you on my mailing list for my free newsletter that will arrive in your mailbox every few weeks.

    Would that be OK?"

Eight times out of 10 they will say OK and give you their address.

    Conclusion

OK, Amut, I've given you some killer info on here to start blogging, so...Go Kill it! It won't be easy or effortless, but when you've busted your butt and are finally standing in the winners circle, your victory will be so much sweeter!

    God Bless, my friend!

    Elmo

    Hey there!

Blogging is not a complicated thing to understand and do. It is the making money with it or from. it that can get tricky.

You can't forget that blogging and a blog is just medium, a channel to get exposure.

The next part is the business part. You have to come up with an executable business plan that generates good profits on a steady basis. This has to include creating your own products, but not until you build up your revenues.

You only need a few super valuable and epic blog posts that will really help the audience in your niche. Once you have great amazing content on your blog you can really spend a month or two just promoting the heck out of your blog..

This is a great way to get started.

Invest in an email marketing tool like GetResponse. Start building an email list and learn more about this.

Don't worry about creating your own products until you are growing a good audience steadily. Get a few hundred subscribers, build a good relationship with them and sell them valuable and helpful products.

This would be my bit of advice for now.

Congrats on making the wise decision to start a blog. You will do great. Just learn and take consistent action.

    Keep on going!

If you have the time, you can do 2 posts per week, with about 1500 words (more is always better!). Always keep in mind that quality is extremely important and that you should always focus on that rather on quantity. What I'm trying to say is this: if you don't have enough time, don't rush 2-3 low-quality posts per week. Do one that is high-quality and see where it takes you.

And like everyone else said - it's not the same as newsletter, seeing that blog posts contain more content.

I would definitely recommend blogging, but only if done right!

Here are the tips you NEED

    1) Blog only about niches that actually make more money with LESS traffic

    2) Blog with social media distribution in mind

    3) Blog with content repurposing/content conversion in mind - ie., write blog posts that can easily be turned into video scripts, tweets, etc etc

    4) Set up FB scheduled publishing to recycle the reach of your old content

    5) Interlink all your posts

    6) Blog to build a brand

    7) Setup a mailing list

Weekly posts of around 1000-1500 words. I don't make my paragraphs too long either. Blog posts are normally shorter than newsletters.

Always remember that the ridiculously vast quantity of bloggers end up QUITTING.

So, pick a topic, or topics that you love.

That way, you are, statistically less likely to quit.

A lot of people have given you word counts to aim for in each post. The advice is based on studies that show longer posts tend to get more Google love than short ones.

There's a catch that none of them mentioned directly.

If you are going to post 1500 words, have 1500 words worth of things to say. Trying to pad out a post that makes perfect sense at 500 words to meet some kind of arbitrary word count will end up being counterproductive.

For your blog to have the greatest impact on your readers, each post should contain as many words as you need to convey what you want to say - and not one word more.
