They can be useful for driving traffic if you take time to set them up properly, although a good article would drive more traffic

unique content + hubs = great traffic potential.
If you leave the hub alone it won't do much. You must build links to it, bookmark it, ping it and also submit RSS feeds to RSS feed aggregators.
I use hubpages to primarily build link wheels and also as landing pages for various products. why? Because you can build links to hubs faster than you domain name and do not have the risk of you domain getting banned. I make atmost 50 links per hub per day and rank really well in google for many of my niches. Also try squidoo, it is also very helpful.

Why would you spend so much time and effort on a site that you don't own? Hubpages could turn around tomorrow and ban your hubs for any number of reasons.

You are not the only person this has happened to.

IM should be treated as a business, you wouldn't build a bricks and motar business in someones elses shop if you didn't have a long term lease, so why do it online.

Hubpages and squidoo both have their place as promotional tools but should never be used as your main source of income.

Protect yourself always own and host your own money sites

i use them, they are indexed very fast. Just be careful to not look spammy or submit crappy content or they will take it down.
