I don't think google sidewiki or anything else is web 3.0.. Web 3.0 is going to be something very different.. like social networking on cell phones.. and internet in general on cell phone and marketing to cell phone users... If you know what I mean.

I think that Web 3.0 will be an evolution of how people communicate online.

Leading the charge will be the new Google Wave application. Instant communication between parties who can share all types of Media in real time.

It can be integrated into a new blog commenting application where comments are being generated in real time in front of everyone. No more waiting to see what types of comments others have posted up after you.

Same thing for social networking sites as well as Forums.

I agree with the whole Google Wave thing. I would consider that the next sort of step. At least on paper.

    Web-Apps like this (virtual webOS)...

G.ho.st® (ghost) - Cloud computing - online storage, Virtual Computer (VC), Web OS (WebOS, Webtop)

    and this (virtual social networking)...

Virtual Worlds, Avatars, free 3D chat, online meetings - Second Life Official Site

Haha. They would if they could.

I don't think we can predict what will happen with web 3.0.

Because generally, people are bound by what they know and are unable to thikn outside the box. People will generally go off of what is already around.. and modify it.

Great examples are when you watch old movies and shows where they go into the future, or is set in the future. Everything they have is just a modified version of what they had around in those days. They didn't and, couldn't predict what was really going to happen.

Many of the suggestions here are web 2.5 or web 2.whatever. For what's really going to happen in web 3.0 we're just going to have to wait and see =P.

But, if I had to have a guess... I'd say something like.. an increase in the community side of the internet (much like with the creation of social bookmarking, instan messagers etc.), but modified.. to look more web 3.0. Like more realtime stuff. More, easily accessible stuff (available in our browsers, apparently much like that sidewiki).

But I suck at predictions. If I was any good, I'd take betting up as a full time job.

      Anyhow, cool thread.

If I had to guess, I would have to say that Web 3.0 is going to look a lot like Web 2.0 which looks a lot like Web 1.0 which looks a lot like . . .

People are basically 'Single-Tasking' creatures by nature. They do one thing at a time and that's it. All this talk about using web technologies to hold 14 conversations at the same time - in real time - is simply not going to apply to the John & Jane Consumer out there.

They're lucky if they can keep track of which Mall their kids are at at any given moment!

As far as IM goes, just concentrate on building and maintaining your list and you'll be fine - at least until the Government outlaws email, that is!

I'll let marketers figure what they call the current set of incremental changes. What we call web 2.0 existed back in the 1.0 days and it wasn't until Bill Gates decided to use Web 2.0 as a catch phrases that it mean anything to most people. (I wonder who actually coined it? Anywho. ..)

User generated content has been around since the days of ARPAnet and was the foundation of the internet. Think of all the forums, message boards, chatrooms, etc. that have been around since the 90s! That was 2.0 back then biggest thing that is new is the ease of which those interactions happen now, the number of people using those platforms, and how the user can now use the data (getting friends, widely available RSS feeds, API's, etc).

Web 3.0 is another series of improvements in how social interactions happen online and where they happen (think cell phones, gps, etc.). Technologically, 3.0 will be a smart combination of tools that have been around for decades used in a way that further connects our ever shrinking world. Socially, this will create new networks that be the new Facebooks and Myspaces of the near future. 3.0 is already here so just position yourself at some of the new and growing access points so that when the masses finally get it, you'll already be there.

Sorry for the ramble. . .

Actually Tim O'Reilly popularized the term but it was coined by Darcy DiNucci way back in 1999...

            From Wikipedia
The Web we know now, which loads into a browser window in essentially static screenfuls, is only an embryo of the Web to come. The first glimmerings of Web 2.0 are beginning to appear, and we are just starting to see how that embryo might develop The Web will be understood not as screenfuls of text and graphics but as a transport mechanism, the ether through which interactivity happens. It will [...] appear on your computer screen, [...] on your TV set [...] your car dashboard [...] your cell phone [...] hand-held game machines [...] maybe even your microwave oven.

Web 1.0 was publisher generated content
Web 2.0 is user generated content

My guess for 3.0 might be "hive generated content"

If you look at some of the advanced things companies like flickr are doing with GPS tagged images you can see that we will soon be able to look at a location in the world at any time from say 2009 ahead and see multiple photos taken in that space and time.

Think of the implications to solving crimes, documenting history and more. This can't be done without millions of users and a huge data mining system to deal with all this hive content.

      Brad,

I think so too because we are already moving in this direction.

These shifts are all about how content is generated, and I don't see that chaging anytime soon because content on the Internet is information. The Internet revolves around information, so that is the stable element or the constant.

    Web 3.0 = Augmented reality.

For example when you point your camera/phone at a hotel the image you see on your screen contains clickable links with TripAdvisor reviews, Google local reviews etc.

    At least in my opinion.

web 3.0 is going to be everything interactive. Your TV, microwave, refrigerator, etc...

The iphone is ready to be a life remote to everything. SideWiki is just trying to jump on the old web 2.0 band wagon.

The next wave is to make everything more interconnected and easier to share.
