Where's the rep button gone?

by Peter Bestel 57 replies
Ok, so I know I've been to bed for a few hours but did I miss the post about the rep / star thingy being deleted.

Has Allen done away with any type of grading of members?

Just wondering

It's gone! I just noticed. Oh well, who knows? Although rep points are a nice touch to this forum.

Martin, once you get ONE infraction, you can't get anymore rep points.

Oh, so this was the reason? I got so excited about the new WF, that I suggested someone to join my social network group and I was penalized for this

Wasn´t intentional, so shit really happens ^^

Good riddance I say. All we need is a bunch of Warriors competing for rep points.

No more stars, no more rep points, just a good community.

              Yah, I hear ya Kev.

But then why keep the Infractions and the Report Post buttons?

So we have 2 ways to punish, and none to praise...

They are gone for a number of reasons:

                1. They're not very "welcoming" to new members at all

                2. Somebody Bribed their wso buyers to give them rep - possibly more but one for a fact did.

                3. No way to control it - people could abuse it very easily just because they wanted to be an ass

                4. I saw great Warriors here who have been with me for years with no rep while teenage newbies who just got on had growing rep. Not cool. I tried to give as many as I could but damn, there's a lot of us here so I said to hell with it and got rid of it.

                There's more but that's enough.. :-)

Many of the warriors are already known here and rep points never made any difference, also bias could have played a role in rep points, this forum is smart enough to know who contributes and who doesn't.

Some teenagers are smart as whips, sadly not many of them find there way on here, so forgive me if I sound jaded :-)

A better description might be hyper active little monkeys who reply to every single thread created here with absolutely nothing to say. Some of them can be over 40 years old.

It reminds me of some boards where a younger crowd hangs out, you get a lot of "ya man, rad cool do it" posts. Thousands of them.

No offense meant and I fully realize we do have some teenagers on here that could teach many of the older members a thing or two. That young fellow from the UK comes to mind...

I totally agree with Allen, and have seen this WF board stuffed with tons of posts exactly like he describes since 'the move' ...

It now takes so long to wade through the nonsense posts that it becomes a real time vampire [which is no fault of, and no disrespect meant to Allen.]

Some folks here always seem to post wise and helpful replies that address, clarify, amplify, and contribute to the particular thread issue.

Then there is the plethora of "ya man, rad cool do it" threads and posts...

                        [Just my personal observation]...

Good move Allen. Let a person's standing in this community be based on what
he leaves behind in these threads for others to learn from.

Besides, glory is for those who have little self worth to begin with.

No one ever gave me a pat on the back when I was growing up.

Understand that as with most groups, it's the bad appels that get the most attention.

When was the last time the Warrior Forum was on the evening news, especially news viewed nationwide or internationally?

Now when was the last time 'Nigerian Scammers', spammers, phishers, etc were on the news?

Right. Good IMers have to bust their butts to get noticed. Scammers in IMer clothing and other troublemakers get noticed and publicized.

The same thing applies to groups like 'teenage newbies'
There are a lot of teens who are not newbies. There are a lot of newbies who are not teens.

In the teens group there are troublemakers and good folks.
In the newbies group there are troublemakers and good folks.
So in the teenage newbies group there are bound to be both as well.

Good move Allen. In all honesty, I was turned off by the rep points. Let people be judged by what they say and do... not by how many people they can bribe/persuade/encourage to give them rep points. As for thread ratings... what's the point? The number of replies tells me much of what I need to know.

                            Ever the rebel...

I had a bunch of rep votes from a couple of very informative and cool posts. It's kinda nice knowing that people respect you and appreciate what you have to offer.

Now, they can send a PM or whatever, but less will come since it was so convenient to click the rep and type a quick note.

I didn't get "pats on the back" through my life either, maybe that's why I think they were so nice.

Of course, I was getting them the right way and in the manner they were meant to be used.

I guess it's more trouble than good. I was wondering about the old warriors vs. the new warriors, since I came across people with a long history at the forum with a neutral rep button. All's good, back to the good ol' PM thank you

So, I am going to disagree with the main concencus here. I think the rep points and thread ratings were great and should be turned back on.

Here's the deal... While I agree that such a system can be abused, in general, it works very well. There are many forums that use vBulletin and these features and are overall better because of it.

One of the things we saw in the old software was people posting a bunch of junk just to get post count (and the stars). Also, there were a lot of other questions/threads posted that were not very on topic or not as "valuable" as other posts.

Over the past few days I have noticed that the rep system and thread rating weren't being used as effectively as possible, because most people just don't know about it or understand it. Over time, this would change, and as it did, the system would become more accurate, and thus more valuable.

A key part of the "self-moderation" idea is that not only can we report infractions, but also report the good and useful.

So, my thought is this: Turn the systems back on and educate users about them (sticky?), and see how it goes for a month or two. If it is being abused and seems like it is not working out, then it can always be turned off again.

Really, systems like this do work well at other forums, and I think it could work well here.

                    What do you think?

                    Mike

I think Allen already stated that there are warriors here who have contributed TONS of priceless information and help over theyears... most of which didn't have any rep here, yet noobs with a few posts had been hit with "new shiny rep thing" pat's on the back...

The fact that some of the hottest warriors were lacking in rep is seriously NOT cool

I have about 6-7 years of experience from other game forums about this rep system and from what i discovered its the most stupid thing to have a reputation system.

I dont want to judge anyone here but from my experience from game forums, the people with most reputation are just spammers that spend all day in forum, quoting every other person in every thread, + repping them and in return they get + reps back and loads of green dots, while in reality they have nothing interesting to say and ironically know nothing about the game they play. we call them repwhores

girls are very popular in this when adding new irl pictures of themselfs every week and use as avapic

My point is that me as a total noob here when it comes to internet marketing, could also start to quote and reply to every thread, tell some jokes, give some + reps, get some back as thanks, work up my reputation and people will think im an marketing uber knowing what im talking about just by seeing my green reputation.

You that have been here long and know each other well enough, im sure you allready know who posts good stuff and who posts bs so in my opinion very much please remove the rep system

You must be special - I only get pictures of their face

This was a good move. If you were starting a new forum from scratch those rating systems could work well. There are many alliances and memberships and partnerships among warriors which means much trading of reps for friendship's sake. Defeats the purpose as those ratings are anonymous.

The rep and star system were already being abused after less than a week. I'm glad Allen fixed it before it got totally crazy.

                  4. I saw great Warriors here who have been with me for years with no rep while teenage newbies who just got on had growing rep. Not cool. I tried to give as many as I could but damn, there's a lot of us here so I said to hell with it and got rid of it.

I really never understood why everybody wants to compete for stars and stripes (rep points)

Honestly its really not needed. Your primary focus should be your business and come here to participate not compete.

We're all on the same level now.

Best to go by how long someone
has been here and their post count.

I liked the idea behind rep points,
but can see how it would be abused.

I mean people were offering me $2000

Personally, I'm just going to enjoy the new forum. It makes it even more comfortable when we don't constantly have to worry about someone "Gaming" the system in order to make themselves into something they're not.

I'm fine either way; the novelty of rep points was a bit fun (especially since the buy a beer icon wasn't transfered), but I understand why they are gone. One thought might be to disable the "give a rep" button in the WSO forum? Dunno if that's possible, but that would be one way to prevent the sellers from taking advantage of buyers. Have a good one!

I understand about rep being open to abuse. But so is the infraction process.

Personally, I would very much like some way, anonymous or not, to be able to say a huge Thank You to people who post info that is valuable to me. Not by Reply - that gets too many entries. So how?

I'd much rather praise someone than I would give anyone an infraction. Now anyone can give an irrevocable infraction, and no one can give a thank you.

Actually, I'm glad to see them go too.

I know I never use to be this competitive and worried about reputation points, and ratings, but found myself doing so when we moved. There is a thing as getting and giving too much leeway.

                          On a different note ...

There are good and bad points on both sides - using reps or not, and many valid points to consider.

But, I do know that I've been noticing too that the majority of the older members didn't have any rep while newer people were getting tons in a few hrs.

I gave out Reps till I couldn't give them out anymore to most of the older ones that gave good solid posts, or that I know either contributed in content, or helping keep this forum in good shape. Allen did the same, and I suspect most of the older ones that could did as well.

I agree that if this forum was a new one starting out, it probably would have worked better. But it isn't a new forum. It's an established forum where people have built solid relationships, and kept them over the years. In doing so, they most likely want to help their friends and alies giving them more then they would most other people.

I'm also inclined to believe that if you give a group like the Warriors half a loophole, they will find it, work it, and mine it, and come up with a hole the size of South America lol.

This can and does happen with or without Rep systems.

I'd like to see us simply get back to being normal.

                            i forgot to add

in one of my game forums we had a reputation system where you could rep people but it didnt gave any reputations point, meaning, you could rep a person how much you wanted, still it didnt give any green rep point

this could be done here and i think it should because sometimes you just want to rep a person saying "thanks for the info" or "good post" or whatever

this is very appreciated to get rep like this when you spend some time writing a post to help people and just get a "thanks for the info" in rep box but your reputation stays neutral

                            think about it

Well ... Sutton invited me as a friend, so I'm well on the way to a list of friends with big asses.

I'm glad it's gone. I was handing out good reps for folks but I can see how it can be abused. And as Allen wrote they're were well respected warriors with no rep and new folks with a few posts with like a 6. Not sure how they did that (ask friends I guess).

We don't need those gimmicks to know a good post or who has a good rep. It's just silly. I know it's popular in other forums but I've haven't seen it on a business forum like this.

This helps people forget about reps and thread ratings, and all that popularity contest BS and they can just contribute to the community like Kevin suggested.

Words of true wisdom. The last thing the WF needs is taglines like "rep me for my ebook" and garbage like that.

Cut that out, Kevin - you know how I hate it when I have to agree with you.
