My TWELVE RULES for the Warrior Forum

I am learning how the Warrior Forum fits productively into my working day!

In my 8 ½ months as a member of this forum and 450 'odd' posts, I'm finally getting to grips with how this forum works, and I suspect I've still a way to go. I love the place, get a lot out of it and it has helped my business grow, but I need to effectively and efficiently manage how I use it. I came up with some rules.

These have developed from my experiences and as such I am simply making personal observations as to how I use this forum. I've found it works for me - you may be different, good, I'd like to hear what you do too. I thought I'd share my rules just in case someone else found them useful. They are written in the first person.

Peter's Rules & Observations
1. This place is here primarily to help people make more money - remember that!
(I could stop there, but I feel the need to expand...)
2. Approach the forum with a mindset of 'contribution'. This may be in direct reference to Rule #1 or just as a good community member. Remember the phrase, 'Givers Gain'.
3. Read posts of people I've learned to respect, admire and listen to. Join in where appropriate. This is good networking and can often increase my knowledge of IM and business.

4. When I've learned something, log it and act on it as and when appropriate.

5. Squeeze as much out of the War Room as possible and contribute when able.

6. I can get addicted to this place. I mustn't kid myself that spending hours answering and reading posts is always productive. Refer to Rule #1 and think about it in terms of a return of investment (ROI).

7. Don't be afraid to voice my opinion. I won't always be agreed with and I won't always be right, but I need to be true to myself.

8. Be tolerant of newbies and folk I don't agree with. Stand my ground, yes, but don't waste effort if it either contravenes Rule #1 too much or isn't funny.

9. It's easy to get caught up in discussions in the Main Forum that have no real outcome and, when examined, have no real purpose and contravene Rule #1. Don't do it! (unless they're really funny)

10. Don't start any discussions in the Main Forum that have no real outcome, no real purpose and contravene Rule #1 (unless they're funny!)

11. I'm allowed to have fun as long as Rule #1 is not broken too much.

12. If I've got something unrelated to Internet marketing to say, post it in the Off Topic forum.

They're a work-in-progress, but they seem to be serving me well just now.

Peter

    OK...good for you.

How does this thread achieve rule 1?

Nevermind all of the superfluous others?

I thought someone might ask that.

If I adhere to these rules I will become more productive. If you choose to take on board any or all of these rules - you too can be more productive.

      Simple.

    LOL.. good post Peter.

After being away for a while and coming back, I can see that such things still need to be voiced.

This place never ceases to amaze me. Gotta love Allen for this brainchild.

You're right William. I know I won't be saying anything particularly new to those that have been around for a while but there's a lot of new blood on the forum, especially since its overhaul, and I figured some might benefit from it.

Thanks Mike, as I say, they work for me.

I can't help but notice that rules 9 & 10 are often broken by more 'senior' members. Maybe I'll PM them a copy for them to peruse. :p That'd go down well, wouldn't it? (Not!)

It would be great if others can discipline themselves to follow similar rules for themselves.

However as you may notice some of the issues with people who frequent this forum is they don't have any self discipline at all.

And there lyes the problem, they're looking for direction and discipline, yet they can't implement self discipline.

It's a double edge sword, but thanks for sharing your insight.

    Hi Peter,

This is a very good set of guide lines you've created for your self to follow. I'm sure it will benefit many other Warriors too.

    Thanks for the post.
    Have a Great Day!

      Hi Peter

This is a very good post. Even if some of these points have been made before they are always good as reminders and there's always new members here that will benefit.

With rule 2 - I like the saying 'In giving, we receive'. Which is virtually what you have said. In life I have come across many 'takers' and they tend to be tiresome after a while.

All the points are good and No. 9 stands out as I've seen some lengthy discussions recently that I felt weren't appropriate for me to join in with, but you can learn a lot about other people by reading them.

Another point I have for myself is to make say anything against another member that's detrimental to them. Likewise, when I've had problems with WSOs or such I may at some point discuss the issue in general terms but I never mention any names.

I start my day by visiting the forum with a cup of coffee. It helps get me in the frame of mind to start working and not get sidetracked. It also motivates me and gives me ideas for the day.

Another rule I have for myself is that when I start a thread to go back to it and read the comments made and whether I agree with them or not at least thank everyone. I've seen some questions being asked and warriors take the time to give good answers and somehow the poster never goes back to the thread.

'Treat others as you like to be treated yourself'.

      Best wishes

      Mary

Sorry, I didn't mean YOU per-se, this is just a hot topic today. There have been many non-IM related topics today that have been so out of this world that I am glad you mentioned rule 12.

Needed to be said. Great job!

This is a nice example of a productive post that accomplishes a goal without being condescending... and is actually related to doing business online and on forums.

        That being said...

        Peter,

I think your sig violates the forum "rules"... that is your wife's site, not your own site.

I was thinking recently that women are really in control of everything going on in the world. Seriously, you may think men are in control... they aren't. Because, if (insert powerful man's name here) gets out of line, you know who puts him in check... a woman!

Each forum has it's purpose. Some require that you set specific rules for yourself. However, one rule that should always apply is rule #2. Starting a thread should be about contribution.

In this forum there are many ways to contribute. Advice on making money is one, technical advice another. Whatever sort of contribution is made it should be positive. That last sentence isn't just about this forum, but about any forum really.

    Good set of rules Peter.

Going to bookmark this one, good post.

For me, I can certainly zone out and let the hours drift by. What I'm going to try and do, is spend a set amount of time here each day, take time off when needed or required. And of course like you said contribute, learn and most important (and I'm guilty of this) take action.
