Is Internet Marketing a Career or Hobby

I wanted to get everyone's opinion and stories on whether Internet Marketing is a Career or Hobby for you? Can you seriously make a living off of Internet Marketing? And if so which would be your tried and true path to become wealthy?

I know you wrote this for a reason but it is such an open ended question like asking how long is piece of string? some have made a good living out of MMO niche others not so good

For the first time, MMO is just my hobby and my side job only, I didn't really think this will be my main income.
But after 3 years I found that it could be my main income, and yes, I can make a living by MMO now

I've been doing it full time for over 16 years.

I'm not in the MMO niche. I promote PPL (pay per lead...lead generation) offers.

It's far easier to get someone to fill out a short form, then it is to get them to take out their credit card and make a purchase. Which is the sole reason why I have always just generated leads!

    Well that's a tricky question.
For me it's a full time business.
but it started as a hobby from just reading and learning
and then BAM it became my passion.

You can start it as a hobby but it depends on

What is your goal within this field?

As a life long learner, I started out 15 years ago as a Successful Domainer and have continued to earn passive income from domaining & epublishing. Since conventional investments like stock, bonds and real estate are mostly overvalued, I continue to build a portfolio of Quality Domains and Publishing Assets that will stand the test of time. I'm fortunate that I have a succesful Offline Business that has matured and provides me the time to pursue and manage online passive income opportunities. Everyone's point of reference is different - it's dangerous assuming too much from threads like this because we are all at unique places in life - geographically and otherwise.

For some, $500/month is a comfortable full time income . . . others feel like they are "barely skimping by" making $10,000/month.

For some, working 60-70 hours a week is just a hobby because they are doing certain things they love to do and don't necessarily care about the money.

Some successful online business owners work an hour a week or less to make a full time income . . . many people would call that a hobby - not work.

Internet Marketing - it doesn't really matter what you call it - and what someone else does has no bearing on you.

It's for precisely that reason - it can be anything you want it to be - that so many of us are attracted to it.

Don't listen to anyone that tells you "IM has to be this or it has to be that" . . . no . . . you make of it whatever you want!

It may differ from man to man. I enjoy to work in this section so it can be said it is my Hobby on the flip side I have been earning a good amount of money to lead my livelihood in this case it can be said it is my Career. So I would like to say it is BOTH. If you feel enjoy to work in any sector, you will be able to reach to your destination. Thanks for your advance.

I used to be in Finance. Took me about 3-4 months to make more money than I was making in Finance.

Then I started to do this full time, and for me it is a career for sure.

To really become a well rounded online marketer it does take a lot of time, and you have to put a lot of efforts, but the potential to make a lot of money is there.

Which one do you want it to be?

I mean, if you want it to be a career, you do what you'd do in any other career and it would be a career. If it's a hobby, you play at it.

I know a lot of people do not make money, or not enough, though they put in lots of time and try hard and are really upset by their failure. That does not mean that it cannot be a career for others.

Like with other careers, not everyone's good enough. Like with other careers, if you play at working (and here I include education / strategy development / implementation of education along strategy developed) or refuse to do one or more of the required actions or do it poorly, you get fired (which, in this case means, you don't make money though it are allowed to keep doing it badly).

What I want to know is why you asked. So, why did you ask?

I believe 3 kinds of people make it a hobby and one kind doesn't.

From my experience selling WSOs on Warrior Forum and having dealt with hundreds of how to make money seekers on these forums. Here is my opinion on people trying to make money online.

Their are four kinds of people trying to make money online:

    1) People that take initiative and understand and succeed.

    2) People who take initiative but don't have the required skill sets or money but really want it but just can't seem to figure it out no matter how much time goes into it.

    3) People that want to push a magic button and not jump through hoops.

    4) People that understand it all: but, are curious and obsessed with the 'game' and seeing 'patterns' and 'learning new things' but never actually taking the effort to scale because they are obsessed with learning and demystifying. Which is rewarding to some and which is why they do it: it's not about the money necessarily even if that is an outcome.

Internet marketing is not an easy task. You have to work hard, you need time. So you have no chance to take it as a hobby.
You can think it as your hobby if you really enjoy internet marketing. But when you take it as a hobby. You will not become very much successful.
    You should take it seriously.
    Thanks.

    Hi,

My answer maybe a bit strange for someone being a member of an IM forum.

I like IM and info related to marketing. I read a lot about them and for me its like a hobby to read about it.

I have attempted to do affiliate marketing one time and I got a sale. I knew I could do more if I kept on with it. But, my problem is that I don't have a marketer mindset - I believe marketers require lots of patience., which I lack.

Now, I like marketing in general, be it on FB, YT or anything. But, I just don't attempt to do it. Of course, I do have a reason for that. I am passionate about developing software, which is my hobby and further I hold a pretty busy and important position in a software firm, which leaves me pretty much no time for full-time marketing.

So, although I like marketing, I am not good at it because I don't spend time to implement what I know. For example, I have a product that has a video on YT and I know having tutorial videos on YT could get me more views if I optimise all the videos, yet I am lazy to do that.

If you are serious about IM, take it as a career. If you are fascinated by the tips and tricks in IM, take it as a hobby.

    Best,
    Ron

If you want to be success in internet marketing, you have to put a lot of hard work to it, the same as in your teenage years, to build a Lego building. So would you consider playing Lego is a career or hobby? ... Hard to tell, right?

At the end of day, find something you are interested to do, follow your passion.

Set a goal, build a system, then work 24/7.

It can be a Career or Hobby. It depends on you and what your're happy with. When I first started out about 7 months back, i was working full time with internet marketing as a Hobby. Since my success with affiliate accounts growing bigger and bigger, i was able to quit my full-time job and now have internet marketing as a Career.

I am not encouraging anyone to quit there job even if they are earning money online. I would only encourage this if the daily earnings were consistent. This was fortunately the case for me and I've not looked back since!

Definitely, I would say start considering quitting your job when the online income gets higher than what you are getting in your current job because there is no point be doing something that you don`t like since online marketing has, among other benefits, the scalability.

I think if you can take a hobby you enjoy (like writing is for me) and turn it into a money making venture -- you're lucky.

But for many people the fun ends once it becomes a daily grind.

Decide your long-term goals in advance and work in that direction. Otherwise you can get side-tracked and try to go too many directions at once. True story.

The decision is up to you. Do you want a hobby or a full-time business?

This can be a full time job if someone take it seriously like me. I am doing this since 2007 and making my leaving only with it. The point is how better you know the market and how seriously are you taking it. Lots of online marketing company have multi billion dollar revenue every year. So you have to be visionary, ambitious and stick to your plan. Make a big plan for 5 or 10 years and then divide it to one year and monthly plans. Start from small and multiply it. I know its easy to say and hard to do but this is the truth. you have to learn first how to be an entrepreneur, what criteria and habits you should develop on you and what to throw away. Any way this topics is going other way. if start to talk it wont be finish until i write 8-10 thousand words.

But yes its possible make living off internet Marketing, and this is one of the online business channel which is gonna sustain many many years.

  • The true path would be to take internet marketing as serious as any other offline business.

Marketing is the life blood of any business. Any business that is serious about advertising and marketing will be successful.

Freebee seekers hardly ever see success in their business ventures, because they don't want to spend money on growing their business.

The true path is to first research your niche.

    * See what your top competition are doing in your niche, and start marketing and advertising where they are marketing and advertising.

    * Do your keyword research and see how you can uniquely enter the niche, and gain your market share, by targeting buyers in your niche.

    * You can either sell product/s or service/s to meet the buyers markets in your niche.

    * Create a data base of your clients who buy from you.

*Keep creating products and services that are unique to you to grow your sales funnel, and market it to your data base of buyers.

    * Build a movement around your business. Stand for something noble, and people will throw their money at you, when you can help them solve their problems.

    * Create an affiliate program and let others sell your products and services for you, while they earn a sustainable income online marketing your products.

*Offer prizes to the top 10 affiliates that make the most sales every month. It will motivate your affiliates to keep marketing your brand and make more sales.

The make money online niche is for entrepreneurs who wants to start and online business. But for the freebee seekers, it's just a hobby

It will probably be a hobby in the starting point. Just like very much anything in life, once you begin internet marketing, it will likely be very difficult. It is one of these hobbies in which you'll believe it's fast to generate a lot of money, primarily due to what precisely you observe on the internet. A lot of articles or blog posts publish about this, and just how it's so convenient to make it your regular job. It is certainly not and you will be extremely blessed if it turns into that. Nevertheless if you deal with it to make it happen, which usually will require a very long time and simply you'll have to spend some cash, it is going to be worth it.

    Nor both.

It's a Business, not a "career" in the common way. Of course not an 'hobby'.

You have to struggle and stick to the plan, while initially have a normal job, and then through alternate learning with actions, you will succeed.

If you have the right scheme / plan /system of course.

I don't think it can be "both".

I personally think it is important from the very beginning to identify if you want it to be a potential full time gig or just part time where you make a little pocket change and call it a hobby

Choose something that makes you feel alive. (It could be anything from Dog Training to The Stock Market.) When you're doing something that your passionate about you will (almost) certainly be successful. And not just because of the income (etc.) ...

However also because you're doing something "worth while."

If you're doing more than 30 hours per week in IM then, it's
    certainly more than a hobby.

The problem at the start of your journey is the time wasted finding
out what works and what doesn't and also finding out about yourself.

I have started working online back in 2009 and it used to be a part time job and hobby. But in 2010 when I was made redundant, I had to make it into a career so the life kind of offered me this line of work as a replacement. I must say it was difficult at the start but now I can not think of doing anything else...

Yes, internet marketing is definitely a career. Unfortunately, most people think it's a hobby and thus get hobby style results.

It depends how you take it for yourself. If you make it a tool to use for yourself for living earning. But people can have a career out of a hobby. So a tricky question to answer. However, if you take it as a hobby or career, you must passionately indulge yourself in it to become successful and climb up the corporate ladder.

Well, what if it is both. Did you know that "if you love your work, you won't have to work a single day of your life?" Consider the fact that you are doing it as a hobby with a fun oriented approach; you would not only learn but also make sure that your keywords are ranking better and you can deliver results for your clients.

    I hope it's a career for most.
If it's a hobby, then that's another story (perhaps its by choice).

But this kind of brings out one of the several reasons why people may not succeed in this industry, if it's treated as a hobby opposed to a career, then you'll get "hobby money" from it opposed to "career money".

  • Yes, one can make a fortune not just a living. Proof? You can google, there are tons of folks who have done that, look up Frank Kern.

Now, like in any profession or area, folks at the top of their game, are the ones making a fortune but making a living is very much possible.

Tried and true path to wealth is actually pretty well known, let me summarize in three points.

    1. Find something that you'd consider a Purpose, or at least your Passion. Exactly figure out what you're willing to exchange to get there, hard work, sweat equity, you get the idea.

    2. Does your passion or purpose align well with your talents? If they do, you'll do really well. There is no other way to tap your potential to the max without aligning your passion/purpose with your talent.

    3. Lastly, figure out how you can add more value to your target customers than anyone else who's in that same business today. Adding value doesn't always mean outdo them for the exact same offers, but just figure out a way to differentiate your product or service and your brand versus others.

If you can triangulate, your passion/purpose, your talent and customer value that you can deliver, you can also make a fortune online, guaranteed!

Take others experiences with a grain of salt, each of us is unique and they may not apply to you.

Building a business around a passion is a cognitive bias: you have to build a business on what OTHERS are looking for, provide solutions, not around what you are passionate about, skilled to do, etc.

      • Absolutely it is, but no bigger than nit-picking someone's response to nose dive into a thread

No amount of alignment with passion will guarantee your financial and market success if you don't provide VALUE to your target market by solving their problem(s) better than what state-of-the-art is, i.e. pt. #3 of my response.

  • Wow who dug up this old thread?

Someone who doesn't have a career, has to work hard to make a living. Where as some with a career has an opportunity to progress.

Running an Internet marketing business is a fulltime job if you want to make a substantial monthly income from it.

When I first started it was a hobby, albeit an expensive one. I invested thousands into MMO/IM products. It wasn't until I got over my shiny object syndrome and actually began to take action on all the knowledge I was learning that I started to make money. Now its a full time job and I still enjoy investing in new products. Now I only buy things that I perceive will have a real impact on my business.

It's about marketing..then it needs to be smth serious..selling anything can not be a hobby in order to make some consistent profits. So it's a career IMO.

I have to admit when I first started dabbling in Internet Marketing it was just a Hobby after I got home from my full time job. Once I realized the potential of working in Internet Marketing as a career It became a full time occupation constantly learning, tweaking and taking positive action.

Never consider it a hobby, or you'll get hobby results.
That said, you may have to be learning as you work a "day job". If that's the case, it may have to be your "side hustle" for a while. (Or, maybe do a "mind shift" and think of internet marketing as your main job, and the day job that pays the bills for now as your "side hustle"? )
