Needed Advise- How Can I Establish My Credibility Online When I Can't Even Post My Name or Picture?

Hello friends,

I am from India and I am currently in the United States working in a company on a H1B visa (workers visa). According to the visa regulations, I am NOT SUPPOSE to work part time or earn extra income. I am very interested in Internet Marketing and want to start an online business.

As you all know establishing credibility and being a know face is very important in being successful. However I face the following constraints.

1. I am an international and even though my English is pretty decent, I have this inferiority complex that I will never succeed in selling online.

2. Now because I cannot technically earn a side income, I cannot have my picture like others or do videos or interviews that literally creates a lot of roadblocks for me. How can I establish my credibility when I cannot even put my name or my picture on a product that I am selling?

I want to desperately succeed online and make a name for myself, but I need to work around these constraints. I need your advise in this matter.

Please come up with some suggestions as to what you would do if you were in my shoes.

Thanks,
Vijay

Let me tell you something Vilay,
From the heart here>>I wouldn't care if you were purple and had a hairlip. If you delivered whatever you stated you were going to deliver as a product<assuming that you are going digital and not physical product...You do not need to worry about becoming an expert. You will never determine that anyway..Your customers will. They will convince you and give you the confidence that you are the expert, because if you are not a scammer and from the heart want to help them with their problem.. your product will show it by being the best they have seen,Because YOU made it and had them in mind when you developed it.... and not just the cash you were going to make.
Now that's what makes an expert in my humble opinion.
Plus.. Got an accent you're worried about? So do a lot of other people I know>NORTHERNERS JK
Sounds like you need some encouragement because you are from India and worried that your accent will hinder you.
Take my advice--Chat with Paul Ponna_ Him and his partner just launched .. Magic List Bot
He is awesome and I plan on entering his coaching soon and milking his brain to dust.

SHHHH can you hear that...I think it's Paul
YESSSSSS he's right hear on this forum. So go talk to him!
And while you're waiting google his name and see what is said about him.
Hope this was encouraging..but seriously..talk to Paul. Look him up here and message him.

Thanks for the encouragement pal. It is very encouraging but what ways can I establish my credibility when I am not suppose to work outside my day job? It is in this area that I am seeking guidance. I would really appreciate if fellow Warriors can chip in with their suggestions. However I would chat with Paul as you suggested.

You can brand yourself also through writing articles. As a writer you don't even have to use your real name. You can use a pseudo name that people can get used to receiving quality information from on a regular basis. Additionaly you can do what you are doing now, posting quality content in forums on a regular basis will add to your branding.

It is totally possible to offer FREE products and FREE advice. It will take time to build your credibility anyway. In the process, there is no law about building a list. Start building it offering your freebies, and later when you are in a position to have a "side job" you will have a huge list to market to and all your groundwork will have been laid.

If anyone asks, you can honestly say you are not making any money.

That is some great advice A-girl. Vijay what better way to establish yourself then by adding huge value to the net via "FREE products and FREE advice". When your followers(opt-in list) see all the value you are giving them and not asking for a penny in return. Your credibility will greatly increase so that when you are ready for a side job as A-girl said you will have a far better conversion rate.

As for your opt-in list if you are willing to pay for it is aweber ($1 first month $19 every month after) but, If you prefer the free way you may try MyHugeList.

Many successful marketers here in the forum have stated that they use different "characters" in different niches.

I guess you could also just create a fictive alterego of yours, who is expert in **** niche/field, and go with it.

And don't worry about the accent... we all have it, just a different one

Thank you so much pal. In a way I can create a pen name and have a voice to go with but is there a solution for a picture? As I said, posting my pic is a severe limitation for me and do people who use pen names ever post their picture?

I am not interested in ghost writing and I want to create and sell information products online. My intentions are not to do anything illegal or hoodwink the system but work within it. I have a friend who has a Green Card and is willing to help me out but unless I can establish myself I don't think I can do justice to his gracious offer.

Eben Pagan has a different name in the dating niche but he does not hide behind a curtain. Now I cannot do such a thing even I go by a pen name and so I am trying to figure out ways to work around this problem.

Many internet marketers use pen names to establish themselves or even to protect their identity and that of their family. Who is really going to know that your name is John and not Jake? A slight difference isn't going to matter much, I don't think. And I don't think it's unethical, either. Authors do the very same thing to protect themselves or release books that they are unsure will perform well.

      Vijay,

Build up your credibility first without selling anything. Build a blog and put great info on it. Use your real name with real photo. Then guest post, write articles. Build up traffic, offer a free guide. When the time is right, launch a product.

      Hope this helps,

      Paul

Order a cartoon image on some freelancer site or use a photo of a friend from India, who won't care.
Do PowerPoint videos instead of a talking head video.
Partner with other marketers (hint: this forum is a good place to meet) with them doing talking while you doing superior products.
    That's just a few ideas.

IC7: You miss Vijay's problem. Even speaking publicly on your own blog absolutely for free may get you fired in the current economy, if your manager stumbles upon your blog and does not like it. Sounds ridiculous, but there were a few cases. Also, free blogs normally has lousy conversions once you start to introduce commercial offers there. If you know a secret of converting such audience into a paying one, I'd love to know it.

I think the problem Vijay is referring to is the legalities involved with accepting money when he is not supposed to.

I agree with Paul (IC7) that you should set up a blog, write articles, guest post, comment, and anything you can to establish yourself as an authority on a subject. This will build your credibility and also create the foundation for your business when you are ready to start.

If you are asking us to help you get "around" the law, then your credibility is off to a bad start and heading downhill fast.

        Nope. That's his own words:

I don't think he is asking us to help him to get around the law. The way I read it, he wants to get involved in IM. Since his work permit is limited, he wants to know how he can get involved legally, which in my opinion is the right question to ask.

If that is what you are asking vijay, you should know that none of us here are qualified to give legal advice. What you are about to get is our personal opinion. Take it for what its worth.

If I got that right, you are not allowed to work or run a business in US besides the job you already have. But there are no restrictions for you to learn anything. So you should learn all you can about IM and network with people as much as possible. Get in touch with a close friend or a family member back home who can follow instructions. You will be the brain and he/she will be the body. He can run the business for you there.

When you are confident that you can actually run a business, talk to lawyer. I am sure there are ways to get permission to run a business in US.

As far as building credibility is concerned, you already got some good advice.

        Best of luck.

David Deangelo= A guy who makes over 10,000$ per day (i think) in just affiliate sales alone- and that is a FAKE NAME.

His real name is Eban Pagan, and while he has since come out with his real name etc...

There are tons of people who use aliases when they first start out!

Thank you friends. Just to again clarify, no I am NOT LOOKING to hoodwink the law or work illegally or any of that stuff. As I mentioned above, I have a friend who has a Green Card and is willing to start a LLC.

MS Geek has exactly identified my problem, which is I cannot post my personal picture or have videos of myself because it could get me in trouble with my day job.

The things I can do is to start an LLC with the help of my friend.
Have a pen name and create a cartoon sketch.
I can make sure that the LLC gets paid and not me personally so I wouldn't be violating any laws.

    The things I cannot do

    Post my personal picture
Make videos like the way Frank Kern or Eben Pagan does

I understand the point about Eben Pagan being successful as a David Deangelo but you have to understand he used himself extensively and did not hide behind a curtain, which is MY BIGGEST PROBLEM.

Anyways I have a few ideas from this forum members that I could make use of. If you have any other suggestions, please do let me know.

I don't get this. Are you saying if you put up a free tutorial on youtube on "how to plant a perfect garden" or "10 tips to using social bookmarking sites" you can get canned? Wouldn't they need to prove you made some kind of income? People put these things up all the time and don't make a dime. What business is it of theirs if you are just someone who likes to share things and give things away? Who cares if you like to take names and emails so you can have one on one contact with those who share your interests?

Ha, here is another way I would run with it. You could be a "mystery free marketer" and do video that disguises your voice and you wear a mask. Again, offer free stuff and build your list. Magically down the road when you are no longer having to follow visa rules your disguise is taken away! It could be a big unveiling and you could build a huge following from it.

Don't get me started on the H1B program. It hurts US citizens working in the tech field and it's bad for foreign workers in the program. The only ones who profit from it are the middlemen and the large companies and the people in Congress they bribe, err.. make campaign donations, to keep this law going.

But, to get to your question...

I don't put my picture online for personal privacy reasons. I think if I ever did go to a marketing conference I'd have to take my macaw with me to get some recognition.

So, you don't have to have a picture to make money online but you will need it if you want to have social fame, something that doesn't usually pay well for most people. You may want to do things quietly for a while and then reveal yourself when you go back to India or get a green card.

    I don't buy it... I say troll.

Unless you're working for the CIA I doubt any program restricts your ability to post your picture or name on a web site.

And if the law states that you cannot earn additional income then, well, that is the law. Just be happy you have a job because there are many who do not.
