3 Lessons Learned From 7 and 8 Figure Bloggers at Affiliate Summit East

This past Sunday I attended Affiliate Summit East in NYC.

I shimmied my bum up to the 3rd row to watch a talk hosted by John Chow, Syed Balkhi, John Rampton and Zac Johnson.

3 lessons screamed at me.

#1 - Practice Your Skills

John Chow and John Rampton both noted how they made a goose egg, zilch, zero, during their first 8 months to a year as bloggers.

This period was bout practicing and honing their writing and marketing skills, patiently, every single day.

From my experience, money responds really well to skilled bloggers and entrepreneurs who hone their craft daily. The highest earners tend to practice when most other internet marketers quit.

I personally write 1000s of words daily. When I get guest post or interview or feature offers, or see a steady increase in profits, that persistent practice - ESPECIALLY during the days when I wasn't getting paid - was a difference maker.

#2 - Persistently Help People

While Syed - the 8 figure guy - was building his blog, during the early years, he helped people create successful Wordpress blogs. This ties into lesson #1 of course but it goes deeper than either practicing your skills in private, or doing so solely through your blog.

He helped people through all types of channels. Money seems to love generous marketers who help folks both for free, and for a premium.

I spend a great deal of time daily helping people for free, and premium. On sites like Warrior, Quora, through my email, social, Reddit, heck, everywhere I can.

The more I help folks, the more folks seem to help me by promoting me, endorsing me, featuring me, by becoming customers or clients or business partners.

#3 - Build Friendships With Heavies In Your Niche

The 4 guys on the platform have been friends for years. Each mentioned helping each other out for a while, through various joint guest posting ventures and the like, expanding each other's presence and building each other's profits.

When you befriend big dawgs in your niche by promoting them, endorsing them, by commenting on their blog and by entering into joint partnerships, your presence expands exponentially. The more good friends you make, thru serving other folks generously, the more your presence mushrooms.

After I followed steps #1 and #2, and commented on Blogging Tips for a few weeks, in addition to RTing a few posts, Zac offered me a guest posting gig on BT. Not a bad deal. I post there daily. Establishing bonds leads to many prospering opportunities for all parties involved.

John also noted how he got his posts syndicated on Forbes, Entrepreneur and a few other world famous sites by building friendships with folks working for these companies.

Practice. Help. Build friendships, by assisting successes in your niche. For years. The guys on the dais all had 15 to 20 year's worth of experience in their pocket, doing helpful, business-building things to promote their success.

Thanks for the tips, Ryan. Looks like you picked up some solid gems at AS East. Money well spent! Kudos.

If I'd like to add, one quick, simple, and easy HACK to achieving faster results is to simply REVERSE ENGINEER successful bloggers.

I learned this from Brian Dean and it works like a charm

It was really, really fun Robert. Zac had been asking me to go for 2 years but last year I was in Turkey in August and the prior year I was in Nicaragua. I finally though was back in NJ and was SO excited to attend.

    All 3 great points Ryan!

    Especially no.1...

Take money out of the equation and hone the craft...not just for blogging but in any form of marketing.

Passion is definitely a trait of all hardcore bloggers.

And when I say take money out of the equation, I don't mean not to have an offer to sell on your blog...

But focus instead on the work first and income second.

Dead on Rory. This has been my experience too. When I focus on the skills, and practicing, the sales increase.

All those guys worked on developing their skills over so many years.

Good point too about monetizing; be open and act like a pro blogger. Monetize, to receive the money that will flow your way.

  • What is the best way to go about making friends with heavy hitters that are in the same niche as you?

      A few ideas C, but mainly, I:

      - commented on their blog daily for months
      - promoted them on social media regularly, tagging them

This helped them notice me, I popped up on their radar, and in addition, I REALLY practiced my writing to move up in circles. Help these folks in as many ways as possible, and practice your skills, and over time, as your commitment to practicing and being generous becomes evident to them, you will have paid your dues and will move up in blogging circles.

Also, ya gotta be clear and bold, and see yourself as being worthy or on their level, because they are only human. At Affiliate East Zac picked me out of the crowd and said Hi, then I gave him a pound and we chatted for a few moments after. We have known each other online for a few years but also met up last year in NJ for lunch.

I also introduced myself to John Chow at Affiliate East too.

Meet these folks offline any chance you get. Fab chance to make an impression.
