What are your thoughts about blogging? (it is for profit or fun, or any other). Are blogs still alive? Or do you believe that it is slowly dying? Or maybe just changing into other formats like snapping, vlogging etc)? What do you say on it?

A blog is just a delivery option for content. As long as there is a demand for content, blogs will always be viable.

If I choose to write 10 high quality and genuinely helpful or informative articles, the only thing that makes them a "blog" when I publish them is that I call them "posts" and they display chronologically.

If I put them up instead as discrete pages, is there really any difference in the end?

If I publish them instead in a print magazine, will that change the nature of their helpfulness?

"Blogging" isn't at risk of dying any more than reading is. It's just a method of delivering content.

I just set one up last night for a retiring professional counselor.

She's going through Yaro Starak's blog course.

I predict it will be wildly successful, so still alive and well.

Blogging is not dying, but SEO has gotten tougher over the last several years. With that said, there are still ways to get traffic to your blog if you work at it. There are also many ways to monetize a blog, such as Google AdSense, etc.

Yes, I agree. Blogging is still alive and I one of the best low-cost strategies to provide value to your audience. You can optimize it with long tail keywords, for the best results and syndicate the blog, obviously.

Low cost indeed Pedro. I'd add after making the minimal investments of a domain and hosting, CDN and a premium theme, you can build a rocking blog without spending much more. Definitely drop some clams on the theme to build a brand; big difference in my online visibility after my developer created a bespoke theme for me.

This has been a great thing Dana. I paid zero attention to SEO forever but started seeing search traffic over the past 6 months. This is because Google has placed a premium on creating and connecting, stuff I have been doing for years, and folks who have focused on the fundamentals for years are being rewarded, while the SEO system gamer crowd is finding it so tough to rank because they ignored the fundamentals for so long.

There are so many blogs that are getting millions of hits every month. It's just that you have to blog about something that people are interesting in and that's fun, maybe a bit controversial (I recommend Kardashian, Justin B. and good looking chic's in general. LOL).

And like dana67 said SEO is getting tougher. But just look at some of this youtube makeup or fashion girls, they are running blogs that are making good cash just with only some CJ links on them.

And if they are getting bigger there are so many fashion companies willing to pay really good money only for talking or wearing their haute couture. So if you are the right "character" and have the right niche, then blogging combined with social media is still hot.

I find it neat how you mention character Daniel. Both from a colorful character aka persona perspective, and from a literal, having character perspective.

Gotta have some charisma and flair to stand out.

But you also need to have character, to be genuine, honest, and to maintain your integrity.

Folks have been telling me I have both categories checked but really, I am just being me, sharing my thoughts, building my connections and doing this for fun. This has been my experience seeing so many established, pro bloggers over the years: they did it mainly for fun, and their blogs grew far beyond what they ever imagined.

IMO blogging is just getting bigger and bigger, and will continue to grow.

I know a couple who are in their 70s who have just retired and recently started blogging about the traveling and other things they are doing in their retired life. It started mainly as a project for them to share their experiences in real-time (or close to it) with their kids and grandkids. They aren't making money with it, but that isn't their goal. It's funny, though, because I helped her to set up Google Search Console and Analytics for the blog, and she is actually surprised at the amount of traffic she gets.

The blog is only a few months old, and she was so proud because two weeks ago on a Sunday she got over 100 visitors to the blog.

I know it's not much, and to full-time IMers with successful blogs it's only a drop in the bucket, but to a regular person who is just doing it for fun that's a cool accomplishment.

It made me happy to see the joy in her face as she told me, though.

Now, that just goes to show you that even people who generally have no idea what they are doing are getting into blogging and having some success with it.

In the example I just gave, I would imagine that her audience is going to be mostly family and friends, and then other retirees who are either thinking about traveling to some of the same places or live in the same area, etc.

I think blogging is an incredible outlet for just about anybody to get their message out there, and if one can perfect the art of producing highly consumable and interesting content, well, the sky is the limit IMO.

Your retired couple has stumbled into a mega-valuable niche market!

Retirees are constantly looking for fresh perspectives, especially from locals, on where to go and what to do that is off the beaten path and away from the touristy areas.

Check out InternationalLiving.com or EscapeArtist.com to see what I mean.

Anything that can put a unique spin on travel is ripe for profit if they are interested, because travel in itself is a huge niche where people spend a lot of money just to get there, and then need to spend more and want to know how to get the best value for their money.

But the bigger sites about life in retirement often sound like pitch-fests full of "buy our stuff" marketing, so it's refreshing to see what "ordinary people" do and to follow along, away from the constant advertising.

Blogging will stay for as long as there are bookworms and I don't think it will be gone for a long, long time. It's the easiest and most convenient way to get information that is presented in a conversational method that doesn't require much thought. Also, it's cheaper compared to making a vlog. Blogging can be used for both profit and fun. If you have the passion for it, you can turn it into profit in the long run. People will always look for content that will benefit them so give it to them.

As long as it sparked a good discussion, which IMO it did, and as long as the OP is not blatantly selling in his posts, such as saying "Hey, click my signature link," then I don't see a problem.

I also can't see jumping on the OP for doing what 90% of the people on this forum do, which is promoting either themselves or their services via their signature link.

Personally, I don't have a sig link because I just don't see the need for it. The tiny trickle of traffic you get isn't really worth it anyhow, and I come here to socialize and try and help out others when I can anyway. However, I can't look down on people who have one. The forum offers it, and for newbies who may not have have mastered other forms of traffic generation I think it's definitely something they should take advantage of.

All I'm saying is that nobody can really know whether the OP started this thread for the sole purpose of driving traffic through their signature link, so let's be optimistic and give them the benefit of the doubt. If the mods don't have a problem with this thread, then why should we?

Personally, I was enjoying this discussion and I like hearing different points of view. I'm fascinated that the answers are so divided, as I would have thought just about everyone would understand the value of being able to publish a great blog post and having it rank well and possibly even go "viral" if marketed correctly on social media.

That brings me to another point. Blogging has certainly evolved. 10 years ago, blogging would consist of simply posting your thoughts, feelings, opinions, and observations on your blog, and working on "SEOing" it by building backlinks. Then, you simply sit back and wait for a few weeks (sometimes less) and see if you can score a spot on the first page of Google.

Modern blogging has evolved tremendously. Now, social media plays a HUGE part in the success of your content. A whole new skill set called "content marketing" has to be employed. You need to have video creation and marketing skills on a much higher level than before. There are SO many ways for people to consume content nowadays, it only stands to reason that getting folks to your blog has become MUCH more difficult.

Surely that doesn't mean that blogging is "dead," however. If anything, the stiffer competition is great for those of us who are consuming the content. We can be almost 100% positive that when we search for our desired keywords, the search engines are going to deliver us the absolute BEST content available in numerical order. Surely that's a very positive improvement over the days when the first 10 search results were sure to be from an article directory or a " Lens" or a "Hub" that was loaded with ads.

Maybe I feel this way because I just love blogging. I think it's one of the few ways where anyone (granted they have some decent writing skills) can get themselves published online with a click of their mouse.

One simply has to remember that many online empires started out with a single blog post. People like Arianna Huffington, Yaro Starak, John Chow, Darren Rowse, and thousands of others-have become millionaires from blogging.

All you need is a domain name, hosting, WordPress, and a great idea, and you can shape your own future and be the master of your own destiny! Surely that's not all there is to it. You need a great work ethic as well, but you get the general idea.

If that's not awesome then I don't know what is!

Blogging is a way for people to share value and communicate. As long as human beings enjoy receiving:

    - blog posts
    - videos
    - podcasts
    - products

through self-hosted Wordpress blogs, blogs will be hyper popular.

My blog is growing like wildfire. Never been more popular in the blogging tips niche, and I'm working my way up in the travel blogging niche too.

    hello,
NO, Blog is still alive .it's not dying slowly.
The landscape has changed, but there are still countless blogs that serve as a platform for people to voice their ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Whether your passion is business, personal finance, cooking, politics, photography, or marketing, blogging gives you the opportunity to connect and network with like minded individuals who share the same passions.
If you're someone who loves to teach, starting a blog can provide the opportunity to educate others interested in your field of expertise. The best part is that, as you build resources on your blog to teach others, you may realise there is a chance to monetise your blog by creating educational products or services online.

First off, "vlogging" is short for "video blogging," which is still blogging.

As far as it being harder to make money from a blog, I will agree that it's true in a sense.

The only thing that makes it harder to make money is that the bar has been raised in terms of what the search engines consider quality content.

I remember only 6 or 7 years ago how you could easily rank a cheesy 400 word article in an article directory and drive loads of traffic to your chosen domain. That's not the case anymore, and IMO, that's a GOOD thing.

I produce high quality reviews for one of my blogs and have no problem ranking them, most times without any backlinks at all.

I'm talking about posts that are 1500-2000 words of well written, educational and entertaining content that contain several forms of media, including videos, infographics, images, PDFs, podcasts, etc.

Yes, it might be a little harder to make money from a blog, but I don't believe that equates to blogging becoming obsolete. It only means you need to step up your game if you want to compete.

You just can't blog randomly and hope for the best:

Also a blog should be used for branding yourself to your audience or branding a niche to its audience. Dont get caught up in buying even SEO tool in the world...sooner or later they all fail. Focus on quality and building a Twitter/Facebook following.

I am going to strongly disagree with everyone who's optimistic. Blogging is not dying, it's dead. Entirely and completely dead. Because nobody ever reads any posts online. My proof? The OP's question.

I also think forum marketing, forum posts, and forums are dead. For the very same reason: nobody's reading them. I mean, NOBODY. Not even me or you.

I know, I know. You're saying, How about this very post?

Well, you ain't reading it. You're imaging you're reading it coz you're a loser and can't let go of the notion that the world's move on past blogs and forums.

People! People! Peeps! My peeps! When you see next a 'something is dying' forum thread title, move along, ignore it.

Why? It's been asked and answered before even though it was just as pointless than as it is going to be when you see your next one.

Plus, while you're in the middle of something dying, you're probably not going to notice. When it's dead, especially after it's been dead for a long time, you notice it. Of course, by that time, you've moved on and it doesn't matter. If someone has not moved on and asks a question about it, ain't no point in answering: there's no help for that someone.

Should you feel inclined to answer anyway, please just refer them to Kay's Forum Marketing" - lesson #153, section II, paragraphs 5 through 9.

To conclude: Blogging is dead or dying. Ditto for forums, ecommerce sites, solo ads, email marketing, post card marketing, facebook ads, facebook marketing, instagram marketing, craiglist marketing, SEO, youtube, vemeo and everything else you can ever come up with.

Therefore, let's stop starting threads about them things dying or being dead from now till eternity. Or, else, your eternity, I promise you, will have a lot of hot, melted stone, and a bunch of red dudes with horns and tail holding pitchforks.

I can't really see how blogging is dying. As-long as the traffic is decent and your content is of a good quality then I can't see a problem.

I would say more than ever before and only getting stronger.

We are actually all very lucky to be living in such a dimensional transformative time. With VR and AR On The Rise and becoming more integrated into our daily lives as we approach and Encompass the internet of things as resident conscious beings, you are only going to see blogging in new and inventive ways. The Forefront of which will always be extremely successful and it doesn't always come from "top bloggers".

One that I've seen recently is an interactive newspaper that's actually stored in your watch and when you enter into the VR or look at it through your phone the newspaper pops up and becomes manipulatable, and updates with news momently. The tester said that it felt so real like reading a newspaper that he actually had to quit the program a little bit early to study deeper into his findings :'D

The more people also create new and inventive ways to consume content there will be a Content shortage coming up soon, that is if AI doesn't start learning how to write articles first

    Yep. SEO is internet real-estate.

If you want to make money online you only have two dozen fields where people are actually giving out money for.

Good luck getting your blog on top of those 20+ dog piles in two years.

If you are a marketer..is bloggin dead, no, buy up all the blogs for cheap now and invest in indian content to keep it up.

If you are a blogger...just don't. Start a podcast or other content outlet. Blogs are SEOs gimps and Google is their greedy little Dominatrix.

Caveat: Facebook is trying something with their own publishing system. If that works, they just cut Google's SEO dick off, so jump on board there ASAP and give it a trial run. Unlike Google, Facebook wants you to succeed and will give you all the back door analytical goodies just to make it work.Fo the short term both you and them have the same goals, so it's worth a shot.

What I have realized is that blogging is still alive
but with a bit of twist,

The new generation now prefer video content over
    reading,

This does not mean that there are not many readers about.

What I noticed more in blogging is that there are more videos
added on the blogging set up but the content is also there due
    to SEO Key words..

I really believe that video will be the future and blogging will
    die slowly.

Does any one agree, if not .... WHY?

Blogging is very much alive, that is the bread and butter for most of the top IM Gurus.
However it is very difficult to start making money if you are just building a new blog. It takes time to build a following and an email list to make money from.

The QUESTION is where do you want to publish... social media or YOUR OWN assets (blog/shop etc)?
And the ANSWER... do you want to RENT for the rest of your LIFE or own your own property and take action on your own destiny?

In spite of OP's intentions, blogging us alive and well.

Some people like watching videos yes but the great majority like to read (or scan info quickly) because many are in a hurry and just want to 'know' quickly.

With all that said and done...successful blogging is more of a longer term plan and can be extremely slow (and lonely) in the beginning.

    Here are some tips:

    - Don't just create long value based posts believing that just great content is the key to SEO success.

    - Write for passion first and money second.

    - Have a long term plan...1 to 3 years (just to get going) if you are doing this part time.

    - 3 to 6 months (just to get going) if you are planning on putting in full time hours of at least 8 hours per day.

    - Promote that content by joining blogging networks even forums in your niche.

    - Incorporate VALUE in every thing you do!

    - Come from a place of service.

-Read! Make sure to do at least half an hour of reading every day (personal development) to rewire your mind for success (and to compile content).

-Determination. Make sure you follow through with what you started.

Blogging will always be alive, there will always be questions and content needed. I found a lot of times blogs are viewers go-to place when they have just the simplest questions that no one they know directly can answer. Or even for the viewer that's suffering from a dis-ease and doesn't wish to share it with friends & family but wants to understand it. Blogging will never die out.

Blogging isn't any more dead than SEO and the questions about SEO being dead came out years ago. It's more alive than ever.

I love when things start to evolve online (a world that is less than 3 decades old) how we think they are dying off or going away for some reason. Blogging isn't dead and won't be dead, but it will continue to evolve as we discover new ways to gobble up content.

It's important to understand that content has been around ever since the first cave drawing. It's never going to go anywhere, but like blogging and SEO, it will continue to evolve. I remember when we didn't have videos or podcasts online and most of you probably do, too. Now, if you don't have one or the other or both, you're missing something.

Some said blogging as we know it died a long time ago, when blogs started to become businesses (as Gigaom and many of its contemporaries such as 70-346 Dumps TechCrunch and Read/Write Web did). But others said that the spirit of blogging lives on, through people like blog pioneers Dave Winer, and Jason Kottke, and Andy Baio.

  • Blogging isn't even really a teenager yet in the intenet marketing arena.

It's still a fairly new way of sharing content online. So blogging is no where near dying.

It's fast become a rapidly growing trend in the online space, whether it's blogging for fun or for profit.

What's your reason for asking this question?

I think Blogging is still alive as we always need a content to promote our product/services. Without a quality content we cannot make our target audience to understand our business. If you ever noticed companies when start blogging, they are always more focused toward their core products/service marketing. In my opinion it is still alive.

    • Yes.I agree with you.
Whether we want it or not, blogging is and will still be a minimum viable thing to do in internet businesses.
And again, people will always (as today do) search using words, I don't think there is another way they search for things on the internet. However you shouldn't just blog and hope for the best, you should do what's called content marketing which is done systematically according to only to what you have to sell on your website (or blog).

I really agree with rhealy29 on this one, blogging is simply a delivery option for that style of content and the demand will ALWAYS be there.

These delivery methods simply morph over time due to the evolution of technology, but the underlying need/demand for content in that style will always be there.

If you look at several modern content delivery methods, they are all morphed versions of what they used to be 15 years ago, but the basic content style is still there and always will be, in some form or another.

For example, newspapers morphed into blogs, radio shows morphed into podcasts, and on and on.

IMO, blogging and other content delivery methods never die, they just evolve as technology evolves.

It's just that certain components of blogging like SEO algorithms are constantly changing, but in my opinion, blogging will be around a long time until it evolves into its next version

Maybe until something better and more sophisticated than the internet comes along...

I love blogging, you still do wonder with Blogging and blogging is still alive. One of the important think is that blogging is the most fun thing you can do online. But most of the businesses would find blogging to be a walkover. In last there are plenty of blogging story that are still alive and well in coming years.

Blogging is still alive so long as you continue to provide good valuable information.

It need not be in the form of articles all the time.

It can be videos, infographics or motivational quotes to inspire others.

But the bottom line questions are still -

How do I get more people to see and read my blog?

So that they can subscribe to my list -

And I can make more money from promoting products to my list?

If you are still thinking that way, I only have 1 advice for you.

This is not my advice as much as I want to say it is but from another successful entrepreneur I have followed over the years.

    That is -

STOP thinking of what you can get from people and

START thinking of what you can give to people.

Because at the end of the day, that is what matters. People only pay attention and money for things that mattered to them.

Well, 10 years ago the only possible way to share your thoughts was blogging.
I remember, in 2007 (crazy) I created my first youtube channel, but I couldn't even imagine that vlogging would be as popular as it is today.
A few new ways to deliver your message exist today, and they are:
    video - youtube
    images - Pinterest, Instagram
    text messages - facebook
    short messages - Twitter

So, yes, standalone blogging is kinda dying. Because creating and maintaining your own blog requires technical knowledge and some money.
Actually, it is not dying, it is migrating...
A lot of people blog within social media today. So, vlogging, instagramming, facebooking are new forms of blogging.
Today young people prefer chatting over phone calls, and that's just how the world is changing.

  • Right now in the media, scale implies social movement. Connections from different bloggers -- the first money of the blogosphere, and the one that drove its shared, conversational nature -- simply don't convey the numbers that Facebook does. Be that as it may, blogging is a discussion, and discussions don't become a web sensation. Individuals share things their companions will comprehend, not things that you need read six different presegetting on get it.

Blogging supports additions into discussions, and it flourishes off of commonality. Web-based social networking supports content that can travel all without anyone else.
    • Everything is a pattern, some are quite recently better patterns
    • Absolutely never depend on "the case"
Think about Microsoft in the old days, the company thinks that every house there will be computer running windows. When android apps and smart phones come in the market Microsoft was left well behind. During this time their main saving grace was the Xbox which kept things ticking over.
    • Your blog ought to be more than a blog

So blogging is not dead. It's just the new pattern of blogging are coming in the market. Like posts, videos etc.
