    Most of these directory submission programs submit to the same directories, making it easy for the search engines to just label those directories as link farms or spam. You're probably better off doing manual submissions. It does take a lot more time but you'll actually see some benefit from them instead of being ignored by the search engines.

    Many of the marketing professionals use a service called Submityourarticle.com.It does not submit the exact same article to hundreds of directories, but makes many unique versions. I use it myself and it does give good results.

    I have used this software for about two years and while there is still some degree of interaction required on your part, it definitely simplifies the process and even allows you to set up several different profiles (different URLs) to submit to the directories.
