Do people "enjoy" internet marketing?

One of the things I notice on here is that a lot of posters (not all, but a lot) appear to find online marketing a stressful experience, with constant "why am I not making this or achieving that?" threads joining the daily desperate pleas for guidance and help (I'm not criticising people asking for help by the way - it just seems that a lot of people who do are at the end of their tether and will take any answer they can find).

Surely the joy of getting stuck into something so wide ranging and complex is that there is plenty to learn - that's certainly why I enjoy being involved in this industry. But when it becomes a frustrating and desperate experience, at what point do you draw the line between persevering and spending your time more productively?

Of course, we all want to make more money to enjoy more comfortable lives, but you can take a second job or work more hours if that's the case; my point is, if you don't enjoy online marketing - and it comes across as though many don't - why are you doing it?

I hate selling, but I love marketing.

All the stuff leading up to asking a prospect to hand over their cash is awesome.

Building a relationship with people, showing them how to get results, all that stuff is really enjoyable to me but asking for a sale isn't.

I'd be much happier in my business if I could just focus on the marketing and education side of things; teaching people how to get traffic, build a successful website, etc, and let someone else worry about the selling side of things.

Gotta do it though. Hopefully, I manage it in a low-pressure kinda way.

So that means that you're not a marketer. You're an entertainer.

Building a relationship with people, showing them how to get results is entertainment. If you want to make money, you need to learn how to sell.

Of course if you tie entertainment with selling together, you get great results. Think of Dr. Oz Show.

The guy is very entertaining, but he's a great salesman as well.

So if you can't ask for the sale, you're not a marketer. You're an entertainer. It's as simple as that.

Making sales is what will pay our bills at the end of the day. You can have a list of 10,000 highly engaged subscribers and make nothing if you can't ask for the sale.

It's like getting a girl turned on but leaving just before the... Fun part.

You know that she'll get another dude to get the job done, if it's not you!

So why bother with the foreplay anyway?

Marketing is not just about selling rather is bigger than that.

It creates an image of a business which helps them to stay in industry and earn for long time.

Some people don't see the chaos. Instead, they see an opportunity to learn something new.

At least this is how it works for me. Every new idea and a new way to improve something gives me thrills of anticipation. It wasn't always like this though - at the very start, I used to get frustrated as many others do in this forum. But it's like running - you hate it at start but after you overcome yourself, you start lovin' it

The same could be asked about any pursuit in life. Sometimes you do things that you don't enjoy because they need to be done and you may not be in a position to hire someone else to do it.

I don't particularly like to weed my garden, clean out my basement, or take out the trash . . . there are lots of other things I'd rather do with my time . . ., but it needs to be done - so I do it.

Lots of folks feel that they need additional income and have chosen to try the Internet "thingy" because the barrier to entry is almost non-existent. Sure, they could choose to become a furniture mover, a house painter, or even a doctor for that matter, but the work, or preparation, or lifestyle is not to their liking.

Besides, challenges and the stress of online marketing can be conquered - they are not necessarily permanent. So you put up with the "unpleasantness" of the work for the reward at the end.

Internet marketing is no different than other worthwhile pursuits in life. Sometimes you put up with the bad because the reward is great. Name one worthwhile endeavor that can be attained without some less than fun effort . . .

As a rule, those aren't the people who are earning a living or a part time income online. This is a marketing forum - but not everyone is a marketer.

There is no barrier to entry if you want to be an 'internet marketer' - no investment necessary to call yourself an 'internet marketer' - no time limits that will get you fired from the job if you don't do well.

Internet marketing truly is a 'dream job' - but many have the dream without doing the job. Frustration is normal and expected if you haven't yet figured this 'stuff' out.

This forum is a healthy mix of marketers, salesmen, newbies, wannabes and paid posters. If you focus on learning what YOU need to know you can avoid the 'stress' most of the time.

Like Steve said, there are tasks within any pursuit which, although they may be boring or unpleasant, must be done. For me, it's the admin stuff like bookkeeping, staying up to date with taxes, etc. I could probably hire it out, but my inner control-freak child would likely pitch a tantrum.

Beyond that, when you do something you believe should work and it doesn't despite your best efforts, it's frustrating. Even more so if you don't have the background or experience to troubleshoot the problem.

I believe that a lot of the things you describe are simply frustrated folks venting here in a relatively safe space.

There are also a lot of people who have no business trying to be in their own business. They read the promises of the "shucksters" and think they really can push a button and head for the beach. When they find out it isn't true, they come here to vent as well.

    I absolutely love it!

I think the people who find it stressful find business stressful and typically don't have realistic expectations. I know that's a general statement, but typically the people complaining that they aren't getting the results they expect is due to unrealistic expectations on what it will take to succeed and how to do it.

What I love about it is the little successes that you can have.

For example, getting another subscriber to your list, or trying a new subject line in a blog and receiving double your usual visits.

It can be rewarding when you work on something and start to see the results.

Of course when you start to see sales and profit coming in that is very rewarding.

I remember the internet marketer Yanik Silver saying that watching the "notification of payment"
emails coming in with money into his mail box was like Christmas every day!

When things like that happen - it does not seem like a job at all

I can just speak for myself before I actuallyt got successful, I had set my mind to it and refused giving up even though it was stressful.

Now when I know how to work smarter and not harder I actually enjoy a very comfortable lifestyle.

Unfortunately I think many people are just stuck and stay in the stressful situation because they really want to make it.

Most people fail to make a living marketing online.

If you talk to any successful marketer, I can pretty much guarantee you that they have a very specific system (process) that works for them and they just keep duplicating it. So the stress like you are speaking of doesn't really exist. Not that everything always runs smoothly and there are never any problems. Things change and you have to adapt.

For those that haven't gotten to that point and need it to work because they need the money, then it's likely to be very stressful. There is just too much hype about how easy it is to make money and sets the wrong expectations. I also think that most are under capitalized, which just adds to the increased potential for failure.

I was lucky and got started back when the internet was fairly new. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. Today, if I didn't know what I know, I have little doubt I would likely struggle along with everyone else.

I have no idea for myself, as I spend my time doing what feels fun, and let go what does not feel fun.

But for most IMers, they are building a business predominantly from an energy of fear, lack and limitation. Which creates an unpleasant experience.

  • Affiliate marketing, like any other kind of business, requires time and effort to fully understand the industry. Aside from these factors, it also requires patience and focus. I am not generalizing here but the people who complain about being unsuccessful in the IM niche are people who give up easily because things are not going the way they want them to be. Remember that failures are part of the journey. Those who are successful now are those who did not quit no matter what the challenges are.

    Some very interesting replies here.

I appreciate there are aspects of life that nobody really enjoys, but what I'm referring to I guess is if you are in this game purely for money - and not even just to afford that new TV or car but to actually make a living - then there are far easier and more concrete ways of making money. You might hate your boss at the office, or waiting tables might drive you crazy, but at least you know you've got that guaranteed pay cheque at the end of the month.

Of course, anything is more enjoyable if you are good at it and successful at it, but as Rory says - money is a motivator, but is money enough? If you don't enjoy what you do, aren't you just swapping the tedium of the 9-5 lifestyle for the displeasure of another?

I notice that a lot of the answers in this thread are from more the "established" and successful IMers - but for those starting out or who have been trying their hand at this for a while with little reward, are you devoting all your time and energy to this because you enjoy it, or because you're desperately chasing a golden ticket?

The more you learn the more you realise that you can control a lot of what you do, measure your ROI and have a clear vision on your overall strategy.

You will get unstuck with time, you are learning a new skill and it takes time. But it's definitely worth doing!

MMO 90% will not make a dollar due to the amount of work involved , IM is everything else from your bricks and mortar to the bloggers

Then there is the biggest Myth " If you build it they will buy" now there is the stress factor for the MMO bunch , then they come on here opening threads you write about that they are not making money but the Guru said this would work

Could also been the last thought of the last Lemming who went over the cliff , the easiest way to reduce the stress is to do the research first so you know what to expect and make a plan plus treat it like a business

I love internet marketing, but there are periods of time that sap your energy, and you need a break - just when sales are slumping, along comes tax time, or the influenza outbreak or something else to distract you - I find the best thing is to take a break, look in the mirror, give yourself some encouragement and leave your website alone for a day or two - go to bed at night and give yourself maximum encouragement, make it an early night and re-charge your batteries - a day or two and you are back in the game - not always necessary to fight through it.

I think Internet Marketing was always looked at as a "quick get rich scheme" so people expected returns really fast.

In reality it is a job and that they need to really put the hours in to make it work. And this gets in the way of the lazy way of work that people were sold to believe.

Bottom line, it is a job and it can be fun or stressful. Just depends on how you look at working in general.

It depends on what you do.

If you're a freelancer or you're doing services, then yes, it is a job but it's online.

However, recurring income doesn't require you to work all day long. You get clients once and you get paid monthly.

Also with an evergreen product launch all you have to do is get more fresh leads, which is not that difficult and only takes a few hours MAX per day to set it up. Then all you have to do is track the stats and scale it up.

I don't get it why people think internet marketing is hard. It really isn't. It's very simple.

But I guess when you want to over-complicate something, you always tend to find a way to do so.

Of course, we all want to make more money to enjoy more comfortable lives, but you can take a second job or work more hours if that's the case; my point is, if you don't enjoy online marketing - and it comes across as though many don't - why are you doing it?

If you always "enjoy" it, then most likely you are not pushing hard enough for optimum results. The real secret is to always dream big. Real success and personal growth demands working continually outside of your comfort zone to reach your dreams and stretching for goals beyond the easy grasp. Learn to "enjoy" being uncomfortable.

Internet Marketing is not for everyone. If you have real passion with internet marketing, you'll have an indestructible motivation and determination to succeed. Success online is not easy, you've got to strive.. fail then getup, fail then getup until you hit the big one.. that's all you need anyway, just one big hit and it's done.

Great response! => So if you can't ask for the sale, you're not a marketer. You're an entertainer. It's as simple as that

however you can make $$$$$$$ thousands with little efforts ( internet marketing = 1% ), another thing a strong BRAND can do everything for you

Ask for the sale is the first basic thing anyone working with sales or marketing need to learn.

It's actually so basic I didn't even think of mentioning it.

There are some aspects to my current venture (HealthyKnowledge)
that I don't enjoy as much as working on my Primary Website. However
like Steve mentioned -- it's something that has to be done.

That said I don't mind working on it (essentially formatting all the
eBooks) and it's nice/satisfying to know that I'm doing a good job
that I will (eventually) be compensated for ... While helping People
    with their health and well-being.

It's great to see that this thread has prompted such a wide and interesting array of responses (even if I could have done without the crappy spam it has attracted to my inbox).

I never actually weighed in with my own 2 cents; as a company we have been successful with affiliate marketing for a good few years now. I've worked in a wide variety of jobs for a wide variety of companies but doing this offers a whole different level of freedom, and we are free to pick and choose our strategies as we please. I like that.

I like the buzz I get when I get an idea for a website or a business, and the way that original idea will spin off and create several more, with my mind going into overdrive as I try to scribble it all down on a page. I like devising campaigns, creating social media content, writing blog posts...I like the idea that - for the most part - you get out what you put in. That isn't always the case in every line of work and in that regard I like that (on the whole) online marketing is fair.

And finally I like the challenge. I like that there is always something new to learn. As I say we are relatively successful in this game, yet there are guys here that have made far bigger amounts than us. It is good to aspire to that, to see how we can keep progressing to those levels; there is always more to learn - even for the rockstars.

    And that's what I like. That's what I enjoy.

The funny thing about pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone is that, done faithfully and intelligently, you find your comfort zone getting bigger when you aren't looking.

My long-time mentor (now one of the top earners in a major MLM company) once told me years ago that you will never know your true potential unless you continually cross over and expand your comfort zone.

There is a huge chasm between an unchallenging "enjoyment" of what you do compared to the exhilaration of victorious achievement through chasing the fading borders of the impossible. Success is essentially this mindset.

Wow! it looks like you have finally answered your own question.
      Great answer by the way!

Roadblocks are roadblocks, and whether you are a seasoned marketer
or fledgling marketer, nobody likes obstacles. The enjoyment of anything,
including IM, comes from overcoming the obstacles, and obtaining the
additional freedom and rewards (and money) that comes with
      getting good at marketing.

As Kay pointed out. . .

    1) if you do not enjoy it, its not for you.

    2) Waking up to sales in my GMAIL inbox, never gets old, better than DRUGS, SEX and ROCK AND ROLL. lol

IF you are doing thing right, and building a list, i.e. getting leads and saving a list of your buyers, its hard not to love.

This is more my passions, and they say in and good book you read.

"if you can find how to make money from you passion, you will never work a day in your life."

That has worked out quite well for me. I have gone from broke to owning a 6 figure a year business. its not about the money its about having an asset and acheiving so much. In a short space of time.

If you pick a niche that you're really passionate about (it can be something completely different then the "how to make money" niche), then you will probably find it easier to stick with it. If you can find something that drives to to keep moving forward other than money, then you should probably keep doing that.

    Depends,
Many people come into the online marketing
    thinking of being rich overnight,
Then after trying gets frustrated of why nothing
    works for them.

Many think its simple as spamming people and
they will buy but they get wacked silly which upsets
    them.

I really enjoy marketing and creating new projects and
    challenging my self.

What keeps me going in bad times is the awesome
community you can get into. People who are in the
same level as you supporting you sharing ideas and
showing what works and what doesn't.

Its not about making money all the time, infact its
more about how you can help others. Thats what
    keep me going.

    I do both!

In sale's its more of beating a nail with a hammer over and over again.

In Marketing, it's more like cooking - you can always try something new and have endless recipes while having fun.

Personally, I like marketing better but sales is fun sometimes too because I get to speak with the people face to face instead of having a conversation looking through a camera lens.

Most internet marketers who're actually successful will say they enjoy it. When you help other people to succeed - there's no better feeling.

I think a lot of that stress comes from information overload. People don't have a profitable system in place yet that will make them money.

So, they usually end up spending more money than they earn.

Starting an online business is hard work. And for the people who don't enjoy the process of winning, then I guess they would feel the same about any business pursuit.

To put it simple, it's enjoyable if you are successful and if you're not it's a pain.

Isn't that true with most things or is it just me?

Loosing weight - nice to succeed depressing not too.

Dating women - lovely when you get them but sucks if all you get is rejection.

      And so on...
